In December 1975, a light aircraft took off from a hotel in the west of Scotland, on a recreational flight. It did not return, and when evidence was eventually uncovered about the loss of both the plane and its pilot, there were more questions than answers. This week, we try to unravel the complexities surrounding the peculiar death of Peter Gibbs.

You should do one on the disappearance and mysterious death of Edgar Allan Poe the man who created the horror genre that it started with the death of the perfume lady then her fiancé leaving a crypto’s suicide note to Poe disappearing for three days that no one knows what happened to him but when they found him he was wearing clothing that wasn’t his he kept mumbling the words tell him it’s Reynolds but no one knew who he was referring to and before dying he held the doctor and said may the lord have mercy on my poor soul and died

It's been touched on by a few commentators already, but knowledge of the Cessna 150 might help demystify this puzzle. I'm a licensed pilot who regularly flies a Cessna 172 (4 seater) and am very familiar with the 150, 152 and 172 series aircraft. The Cessna 150 is a small, 2 seater aircraft with limited allowance for weight. First thing to know is that Private Pilots do not fly with Parachutes, there's no room to wear them in Single Engine Cockpits and no point in trying to put them on the case of an emergency. We rely on our experience and training to save our lives in the case of an emergency. So the parachute is no factor in this story likely enough. Gibbs main mistake here was flying with expired currency (Pilot license's don't expire, at least not in US), at night, and under the severe influence of alcohol. Night time flying is NOTORIOUS for causing one of the biggest killers of pilots, disorientation. Its what killed JFK Jr and he was stone cold sober. At night the sky, sea, and ground all merge and if you can't see the stars or moon, its even easier to lose your bearings. Here's what I think happened. Gibbs took off but, due to the influence of alcohol quickly lost his way and didn't know wear he was in relation to the air field. He likely got to a point where he felt he needed to bail out over water. So he set a level, low altitude flight over what he thought was water but was in fact land and jumped. The prop blast from the engine would have, 100% slammed the door shut behind him (I have personally experienced trying to open a door in flight and its very hard), and upon slamming the "latch" that "locks" in place (horizontal door handle) would have easily slid back into the locked position. (Again, something I've seen many times in 172's). Then the plane would have continued flying straight, slowly descending, until it hit ocean, causing all the damage that was seen upon its discovery..... Just my personal thoughts on the matter, though it definitely is a puzzling and unusual case.

That sounds very far-fetched. More likely there was a bigfoot hiding in the plane when he took off. Once in the air, it telepathically summoned its UFO and abducted Gibbs. A grey alien took over the little plane and flew it into the sea. Just before it crashed into the sea, it teleported back to the UFO and spent the next 4 months gang probing Gibbs with the bigfoot and some other aliens. They then dumped him in a tree.

A good explanation for why he and the wreckage were so far away. But does hit a snag with the condition of his body. Hitting a tree at even 30 mph, let alone anything higher, would do more than scratch his leg. Not to mention the lack of decay from a body apparently sat up in a tree for 4 months. So while I wouldn't be surprised if your explanation is how he got outside of the plane and why it was so far away from him, I think something else was involved.

Plus ive flown a Cessna 150. There is no way someone could hide in it. They are very small and the plane would be uncontrollable if someone was hidden in the tail. Damn near impossible to open door in flight. The airflow prevents the door from opening wide. Definitely a mystery.

It wasn't in good condition, it wasn't 'up in a tree' as the drawing shows, it was laying across a downed latch tree and the police had to remove one branch, and finally his body was only held together by the clothes he was wearing. Even the coroner said he was walking downhill, but that's left out of the narration, he's stating false facts saying it had very little signs of decay, it was totally decayed if only the clothes are holding it together, he also says he was 'traveling' downhill, as in he could've been dropped out of the plane, why say it like that instead of he was 'walking'? Because it sounds more mysterious. And mystery sells.

Karajan was Austrian. But then, German was his native tongue. I suspect some of the dispute with Gibbs arose from K's membership in the Nazi party, the nature of which has always been up for dispute (true belief or opportunism). A number of classical musicians who stayed in Germany and Austria, including Karajan and his arch-rival Wilhelm Furtwangler (who saw the younger Karajan as a threat), had to undergo de-Nazification procedures in order to perform again after the war.

Lots of old soldiers are like this. It's difficult for them to intergrate into peace time society again and many of them have a victor's complex; they think because they fought in a war, it gives them the right to behave however they want and they often sling around the fact that they "did their duty" and that they "fought the enemy for your worthless skin!" in order to bully people. My father does it quite often. I've had to live with it and quite frankly, it's make me a little resistant and very resentful of this.

The force of the wind speed will secure the doors shut, like when you slam a car door shut. They don't "lock" as the video says; they'd only be locked when on the ground, never in flight, as you have to open them if you need to bail out. His body was in a tree in the far north of Scotland in the middle of winter. The freezing cold temperatures would have kept him preserved. The body was only found because the tree collapsed. The search teams would have been looking for him on ground level, not upward. Incidentally, given that he was very drunk when he took toe Cessna up in the first place, the only mystery, really, is why anyone thought it was going to end well. He probably took the plane up and either failed to secure his seat belt and didn't shut the door properly and fell out, or parachuted out due to some problem (real or, most likely imagined) and landed in the tree. If he did have a parachute on, he may have unbuckled it and it got carried away on the wind, in which case it might have been carried hundreds of miles. In any case, caught in the branches of the tree and unable to work himself loose, he died of exposure.

Couple of notes about this. A Cessna is a tiny cramped airplane and it would be impossible to hide in one and not be noticed during or after take off! That's a bizzare one. I'm honestly leading a little bit in the direction of the paranormal, due to the length of time before his body was found and the condition it was found in. I can believe the aircraft traveling pilotless for 20 miles, as things like that have happened (Look up the the July 1989 MiG-23 incident), but Gibbs' body being found in a searched area 4 months later with little signs of decay is too damn strange for me. And bailing out of any aircraft going any real speed without a parachute seems to me like it should cause a bit more bodily damage than just a cut on his leg........

This is incredibly weird, I feel like there's no other explanation besides paranormal. The fact his body somehow hadn't been found in four months and that it was in such good shape just defies logic

While Gibbs bailed out before hitting the water the Aircraft's doors may have been locked shut due to the impact into the sea AFTER he bailed out this part makes sense however the part of with his body being perfectly preserved is like you said...defying all logic

I was thinking the same exact thing the weather and his body being were they previously looked for him man all that stuff is a trip definitely since knowing about missing 411 I am alot more careful when I go out in the wild and national parks and alot of other places I don't go alone and definitely pack at least a backpack with food water and basic things for survival knife with Flint water proof matches etc etc small first aid kid just in case anything does go down you never now but since reading some of the books and also seeing both movies yea no it trips me out hahaha

Exactly what I was thinking as well, deteriorating weather conditions, location of the body in an area previously searched, no signs of major struggle or animal predation. It’s like a classic 411 case.

Love this channel! I learned to fly in a Cessna 150, the door has a handle like a car door but it does not lock like a car door. If you pull the handle, even in flight, the door will open. Since the pilot was intoxicated I wonder if he simply fell out. If the door wasn't properly secured and if he wasn't wearing a seatbelt it's very possible. It's also very possible for the door to slam shut due to the wind speed and for the aircraft to continue flying if the air was calm and it's attitude was stable. I cant imagine surving a fall like that only to die in a tree. Just like in a automobile, Don't Drink and Fly kidos!

@Robot Zombie Missing 411 is a book series about unsolved disappearances. It includes everything from people who were never seen again to people who got lost and couldn't properly explain where they got lost too. Oh and lots and lots of deaths where the cause of death is uncertain. This is why I say "grab bag of everything" since the only common link I know of is that people died in the wilderness.

I investigated the Legion for my Masters Thesis and since I’m now a PhD, it must have been acceptable and I must have put forward arguments that have the Legion alive and well in at least 161 CE, long after they were thought to have been “wiped out”. Another great video, though a few points I'd like to state: Few signs of decay? Steve Punt, during a podcast on the mystery on the BBC, stated (which was taken from police reports and the final pathologist report) that the body was "only held together by the clothes he was wearing". It had been four months, he was skeletal. The police report, pathologist report and the initial and second statement and request from MacKinnon all state he was skeletal. You also didn't mention the discovery of a second aircraft wreckage, one significantly closer to Oban. It's not conclusive it's a Cessna, instead being noted as a "small aircraft", but the aircraft is missing a wing. Your artist drew a Cessna with one wing instead, which seems to be info from both wreckages, given the crash you talk about was a Cessna but was missing both wings and the one I brought up isn't confirmed to be a Cessna but is only missing one wing.

Thank you gentlemen once again for an succinct, honest and balanced recounting of the event. I find your final summary explanation reasonable, except it's so difficult to understand how the man's body was so well preserved- did a coroner ever speculate on day of death? Sorry if I missed this detail. Just a few moments into your presentation, I too thought of poor Mr. Valentich. Excellent work as always, thank you for making this frustrating and unprecedented time of isolation and caution more intellectually stimulating and tolerable.
