I started this series, like many people I'm sure, wanting to see the 'rise' of Penguin and how this will bridge The Batman I and II... and now... Now, I want to see the rise of Sophia and hopefully get to see her... progress... and have interactions with Pattinson's Batman in the next movie. I don't know if both Sophia and Oz will make it out of this series, don't know the plans, but hot damn I hope Sophia rises. I was so bummed when Alberto was killed off in Ep1, because I love that actor, but I'm so glad we got to see flashbacks of her relationship with him. I cannot wait for next week! So glad this is a week-to-week series so we can have these great conversations every week. "Put your pants on, Johnny. We need to talk." #teamsophia

This makes Sofias scream at the end of episode 1 even more scary and more tragic. It also recontextualizes the scene with Carla Viiti pulling her kid away at the funeral party for her brother she knows she’s not actually The Hangman but she does know she could be out for vengeance and could hurt her daughter. The way Sofia leans into people thinking she’s The Hangman knowing now she’s just leaning into what other people think of her.

The Penguin might be the title character, but this episode had me routing for Sofia by the end. She truly was screwed over by everyone around her (except her brother). And seeing Arkham as a villain in itself means I'll never see it the same way in another Batman property again. Fantastic writing from them on that front!

I wanna add to something, because I haven't seen this particular element get talked about a lot within in the episode: Alberto just became such a lovable character in retrospect and his loss for Sofia became so much more heartbreaking. I think it's really interesting that Carmine calls him "soft". In episode 1 we get introduced to him as this hedonistic druggie "loser" type of mob character. But actually, if you think about it, his lifestyle and especially his drug abuse makes a lot of sense. I think sensitive people who grow up in these kinds of environments often flee into escapism through any means. Drugs are very attractive to people like that, who wanna drown out the fucked up world they're living in. So what we saw as him being a useless druggie in episode 1, turns out to have just been his coping mechanism for being "soft". He's the only one, who unequivocally stands with Sofia. Notice the detail of how Sofia is only able to get out of Arkham, once her father is dead and Alberto is technically in charge. He couldn't help her sooner, but as soon as he could, he got her the fuck out of there. He seems to have been a really good brother. Maybe not the best person, but out of the entire family, we've never seen him kill anyone. It's totally possible that for all of his supposed failings, he was just a sweet guy who made fun of Oz in the wrong moment. And about that: He must have known that Oz ratted on Sofia, so of course he would be insulting towards him. He was also on drugs. So in retrospect even his murder by Oz just got re-contextualized so much.

@@tsheporabekane4172 it's so complicated because on the one hand you understand Oz reacting the way he did and killing him after that, but on the other he's part of the reason Sofia went to Arkham so you get why Alberto would hate him and want to tear him down. which the fact nothing is black and white is part of what makes this show so good IMO.

Now that she knows it was oz that killed Alberto, I think everyone and anyone close to him is now in imminent danger. The battle of wits between these 2 is gonna be wild. It looks like the next episode is gonna be oz taking on the Marones, and the rest is gonna be the war between Oz and Sofia. I gotta a feeling the chaos and body count is gonna go up 10 fold from here on out, and I predict a full-on snap/going crazy from sofia. I know this episode did a lot of showing she wasn't crazy going into arkham, but her time in arkham and her life experiences I think are gonna push he over the edge. She has done a lot of teetering and playing off the crazy til this point, but I can see her fully losing it at some point before the end. Potential deaths for me are her therapist, oz's girl, his mother, vic and vitti once he is expendable.

Off the top, i thought this episode was very good. I must admit I have a tendency to roll my eyes a bit when genre fans who sample... let's say a narrow field jump to "they have to win an oscar for this" (or in this case, emmy) and whilst i admit I still have a little bit of that here (in no way shade to any performers by the way, there is a couple of factors, the most important of which is this is a limited series; *if* DC can resist the urge to announce a second season the limited series category is always the weakest field so there is a realistic chance cristi could get in (she's very good in the role, clearly, the way the emmys works is you submit a standout episode for your character for considering and this is clearly the one you send for ms. milioti). Now, does she compare to say last year's winner Jessica Gunning? That's up to the individual to decide, but i suggest caution in immediately jumping to conclusions (like, people were unironically saying downey should have been nominated for endgame, time mostly shows that hasty declarations are just that).

It's great that you praised Cristin for her acting, she really deserves it. However, it would also be wonderful to see more celebration of the artistic talent of actresses in Marvel and their TV work, which is equally impressive. For instance, Elisabeth Olsen's nomination was a pleasant surprise and it would be nice to see more recognition for such performances. Additionally, it's interesting to note that actors from DC seem to receive praise more consistently for the grittiness in their roles. It makes me wonder if the industry tends to favor darker themes when it comes to recognizing exceptional performances. It seems like stories of that caliber are the ones that receive "Emmy-level praise," and it would be great to see a more diverse range of stories and performances being celebrated.

If im being honest, I didnt care for this episode at all. It almost killed the show for me. I signed up to watch a gangster show, not psychological torture p*rn. It felt more like a horror movie and that's not a compliment. I've been watching the show with my dad who doesnt care for comic book stuff but has been enjoying this show and he agreed, completely ruined the pacing built up last week. In fact, he doesn't want to watch any more of the show now, and he's not squeamish, he just thinks it was gratuitous and didnt connect at all in the way he did with the first three episodes. If im honest I don't agree re. awards for this episode. I think her performances to date have been incredible. I don't think it takes special skills to do this kind of psychological torture performances, at least to me, it just feels like any performance I've ever seen in any movie or TV set in a similar environment as this episode was set. I didn't see the same subtleness that we had in the first three episode performances until the final few scenes. I appreciate that not everyone will share this opinion but I thought I'd offer a counter point in the comments section in case anyone else may have felt the same.
