Solid setup here. I didn’t realize how small the f3 was. Works nicely with the rig. So when you run a line to the 3.5mm Jack so you can bake in the audio, are you able to split the audio tracks in post? Additionally, how is the timecode workflow? Thanks!

Hi Anson, I am toying around with two fp/fpL rigs. On my cine rig, I mounted a smallrig top handle which has four cold shoe points. Using the two side cold shoe mounts on the handle, I mounted two elastic shock mounts for my nice small condenser mics. Then I used a smallrig monitor mount to mount the zoom f3 on the handle. I know this may seem overkill, to mount two mics. The thing is, I like the idea of stereo sound. The mics and the f3 can easily be removed for different audio setups. I tried this because I already had a stereo set of mics, but maybe a single stereo shotgun mic would better, just one mic would suffice. Still, this was fun to try. Perhaps I will put up a video of my rig so you can see. It is kinda wild! I don’t have a v-mount battery, but at least I can plug everything into a power strip if I want, otherwise everything is battery powered. The battery life on the f3 totally sucks! If I mount the monitor on the other end of the handle, it sure looks interesting to say the least. It sure costs a lot to get rigged out!

You and I are of like minds on this camera. It is so good in terms of value for money, all the “problems” that people whine about can be solved with less than the balance of what they would spend anyway on some high-end DSLR or canon/red/bm/sony/etc. rig. Additionally, the added bonus is that you are not committed to one solution to solve any problems you mention like rolling shutter or audio. I also love the fact that you bring up Sigma’s stellar adapters, you can mount lots of glass to this camera with the caveat that AF will either be non-existent or degraded - but if you get a gimbal like RS3 pro, you can pull focus with your phone (or LIDAR). On the audio, I will say “zoom” kinda screwed those of us that are F8n owners, they dropped support then came out with a new F8 with no upgrade path, but if you need affordable bullet proof audio an F6 or F3 is the ticket (once again, value for money).
@Ansonandco
@Ansonandco Жыл бұрын
Exactly! It is an amazing value for money solution. And what’s funny is other high end cameras have these same problems. The red Komodo has a 3.5mm mic jack, and is tiny and so micro jitters are definitely there. As far as LiDAR, you may not even need an DJI gimbal… stay tuned 😉

Question: Do you add the audio from the f3 in post edit, or do you go from the f3 output to fp audio/mic input? The reason I ask is, you can’t bypass the camera preamps by simply plugging in an external mic or plugging in the f3 to the camera. So, you have to add the sound in post editing and sync it up. The camera pres are hissy.

@alaeifR

1. How do you sync audio? No timecode? (I use the aux out from my audio recorder to the Ninja V or FP audio-in, so I have audio with the video already, but can manually sync in the better quality audio from the recorder if I need to. 2. With a massive battery like that, why not power the BMVA with it as well? 3. No focus-puller? You have a cine lens and rods in place already?
@Ansonandco
@Ansonandco Жыл бұрын
1. Honestly I typically pass the audio through to the FP. Otherwise yes I would sync in post. 2. Honestly I haven’t found a good cable management solution for it. I’m not opposed to it, but I hate a bunch of cables and so I just don’t connect it to the v mount. 3. I prefer to pull focus by hand. So I tend not to use a follow focus unit.

Anson, you created perfection! I recently became the owner of this wonderful camera and I really like it. I easily figured it out, because I have experience with different cameras. But one thing is not clear to me: why is there dng 8 bits? It’s clear to me when dng is 10 or 12 bits, but why 8, there still won’t be such a color depth. It's like a bad jpeg sequence. Maybe I don’t know something about dng 8 bit and it has a special meaning? Could you tell about it as a guru of this camera?

Thanks so much! I don’t know why 8bit is an option, other than offering a DNG offering to SD cards. I personally use it when I’m in a pinch and want to not record to an SSD. If you expose in camera it does a pretty decent job

@@Ansonandco Thanks for the answer! In my opinion, if it is not possible to take an SSD with you and you need to record inside the camera, then it is better to use mov all-i, for example, in the portrait color mode, it gives such a soft and pleasant image.
