THE PROBLEM WITH GARY VEE & Our Modern Society | A Chinese Take On Gary Vee

Hi all! I guess for me Gary Vee has a very contrasting personality that I would usually come across especially for someone like me who is raised in a Chinese culture, so I will just take this chance to talk about himself and also how our society has created a demand for his "motivational" or "self-help" content. Does his content reinforce the notion of chasing fame and money? I will let you be the judge.

I think you’re right about what he’s standing for right now. My video was made three years ago and he definitely focused more on the mantra of “hustle”, where a lot of people have pointed out back in that time.

confident? i wanna laugh at him being confident lmaoooo , he telling people in his seminar to punch their mother in the mouth and their other things that doesn't make him confident, lying a lot and to everybody many times is one of them. Here a multi millionaire honest review on him leoniedawson.com/the-horror-pitchfest-an-honest-review-of-gary-vaynerchuk-success-squared-and-success-resources-australia/ . him telling people to post 1000 content when he isnt doing that but his team is not confident lol. This guy advertises empathy a lot and he doesn't know shit.

Jeezz Jeff, this video is so refreshing!! We couldn't agree more with you that our modern society is incredibly individualized and ego-focused. Including social media content, so it's been really nice to found this different kind of - more discussion promoting instead of lifestyle sharing - video from you. Happy to get connected! =)

I've never heard of this guy before. You said a lot of true things - I agree, you need to have balance in your life. From the clips you shared, it seemed to be all about work, and working super long hours. It's great to make money (we need it) but not at the expense of everything else. I liked your views and agreed with them!

He is Russian and Jewish and grew up in New York. I am also from HK, and my wife is Jewish and i have tons of Jewish friends from US and Israel. I think Garyvee mentioned you only work as hard as what you want to achieve in life. For him, he wants to buy the Jets so he works extremely hard, but I don't think he will agree that his work ethic applies to everybody.

I think you're making the same mistake many other people make that are critical of Gary's content: You focus too much on him rather than the advice he is giving. The only time you made a reasonable critique on his content is Gary's take on the amount you should work. But your point only stands from out of context of his bigger message. Yes, he says that people need to work more. But the critical caveat to that is *working as much as you need to reach your goals.* His intent is never to suggest that the only measurements of success is money and fame. He makes it clear over and over again that your definition of success is yours. However, if you want to reach that level of success, then you have to cut out a lot of the escapisms and excuses we all tend to make that are holding us back. The reason he talks so much about himself (wanting to be the biggest marketing agency, owning the jets, etc) is to outline his own goals and the amount of work he knows he needs in order to reach it. He's showing us, through his actions, that goals take a lot of work and A LOT of time. Also, the reason he talks so much about social media? Because that's his expertise. He runs a social marketing agency after all. The whole "extract only the things you need from him" is also missing the point. There's really nothing to extract other than to get out of your comfort zones and do the work you need to do to achieve your definition of success. That's why his content is so repetitive to people, yet people still continue to miss the point. Why? Because they don't focus on his points, but focus on him.

Yo man, only just found out about Gary Vee a few weeks ago. I only know about Tony Robins. I think that his style will most likely suit some people and other motivational speakers will suit other people. So I get what you are saying Jeff but I think for some people his message could be hugely useful. If ppl aren't self aware enough to realise what they want themselves then might as well follow something.
@JefflesChangy
@JefflesChangy 5 жыл бұрын
Tony Robins! He's the main guy haha. Yeah I agree he style might appeal to certain people, but at the same time his messages could go a little bit too extreme so for this video I'm just scratching the surface of this, might do a deep dive into a particular topic that he covered actually!

Ok, I'm excited to join this conversation because I have actually met Gary Vee in person. I do agree with you about being humble, I didn't like that he had such a high view of himself that he almost sounds arrogant. His mindset worked for his success but may not be the best advice to give to a generation that already sucks at building connections with people. I get the whole "put your head down and work until you achieve your dream" but I think some people can take his words too literally and end up ruining their relationships with other people due to arrogance
@JefflesChangy

Interesting because I've actually met GV in person as well... I will say his talks are quite different as compared to his social media presence, but I guess you kinda have to be loud in order to stand out right? lol. I think we can take the core of his messages (e.g. work hard, stop complaining and be grateful) but probably just not take it too literally haha

I see what Gary Vee is trying to achieve with his style of coaching. The culture of the hustle and grind that he's leveraging. But I find him to be quite aggressive and like you said, egocentric. I don't mind the profanity so much. Case in point, I love Gordon Ramsay. But it's Gary Vee's personality that I'm not a fan of. Like you said, with everything, take the things you find value in from what he says. He also lacks the likeable charismatic qualities of other speakers like Tony Robbins, Robert Kiyosaki, Mel Robbins (also a big user of profanity but she's actually likeable), Jay Shetty and Simon Senek (an amazing speaker IMO). Cody Wanner is another KZbinr who does motivational stuff for content creators like us. He's extremely likeable and positive. Even Will Smith has been getting into the motivational thing and as you know, he's the king of charm and likeability. So, it makes a big difference to your message if you're likeable.
@JefflesChangy
@JefflesChangy 5 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting one, I think his mantra of hustle and grind is a little bit over the top and maybe you can go search for Graham Stephan - he just made a video debunking this! I don't think profanity is a huge issue here as long as the messages delivered are actually giving off values to the audience, instead of using that as a stun. And I agree with all the motivational speakers that you mentioned, I followed quite a few of them as well!

Very interesting point of view and very valid points you make! I've seen a few things from Gary Vee and he is very in your face lol His work ethic is very extreme. it does put some reality to being 'successful' in anything. The more you put in the more you get out of it. Eg training for professional athletes, etc. OF COURSE, you do this within your capability and create a balance that works for you which refers to your point of follow him in his work ethics can be bad if you can't handle it. So only do what you can. I haven't seen too many of Gary Vee's content to make a call if he is all about chasing fame and money but if you look at Dan Lok, i say he is all about fame and money on first sight lol.
@JefflesChangy
@JefflesChangy 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think the key is work-life balance, Graham Stephan actually had a video talking about how GV's ideologies are actually quite detrimental to our wellbeing. But yeah agree on Dan Lok, he's definitely one those who's all about the fame and money lol

I think it really depends on the person when it comes to the so called hustle. I really think that achieving anything obviously will take effort and a certain level of willpower. But don't be discouraged if its part of a 5 or even 10 year plan where you can do it comfortably without losing your mental or physical health. You will need to do a little more heavy lifting if you want to take on entrepreneural goals, the same way you will gain only with pain in the gym. But completely slashing social life for money and clout can damage relationships you'll need in life to become a more whole person. I think in the beginning of your journey you will need to put more effort into your craft to get it off the ground. You will have long days, and if you love it enough you won't feel like you are working. But once the business is on the ground running you can go back to a life more balanced. There is a small population of people who will work 80 hrs a week doing 1 thing for 10 years, knowing they will most likely fail, just to get to the top. That is probably in the 1 percentile. I think this extreme should not paint every person. Life is so full of many different experiences, and sometimes being kind sharing your love in the world is more important than anything in the end.

Interesting views on Gary Vee. I have a pretty bipolar relationship with his content myself. I flip between respecting his drive and agreeing with his notion that you have to take responsibility for your life.. and feeling like life is best lived in the slow lane and feeling like he is promoting a rat race I simply don't believe in. Either way he's entertaining and a largely positive personality, so I can't fault him too much. haha. That's where I stand at least haha :) Good video.

You definitely hand picked videos that suited your opinion as too many people do. I would recommend you take a few months to research him thoroughly first. I would recommend everyone to watch garys vids and decide for yourself rather than use one video to judge Gary v or I mean, anyone at hand. In multiple videos, Gary clearly states that his methods might not work for you and his over arching message is that you HAVE TO WORK hard if you want to be extremely successful but at the end of the day, you need to be self aware to know what works for you. It’s also super interesting to me that you would title your video as “ a Chinese take on Gary v” as I would assume you are aware of the Chinese work culture of 997, especially in tech, which is known to be problematic. Anyways, for anyone who is using this video as a legitimate conclusion on Gary v, I highly suggest you don’t and do your own due diligence.

I grew up in the old Australia. I knew farmers worth multi millions of dollars who didn't say a thing about it or display any signs of wealth. I think it's really similar how we're raised - even though they're quite different cultures but we can definitely see some similarities here. With social media and it is so accessible, this just facilitates the need for people to display their power and wealth - I think it's kind of our human's nature to do so, but I don't necessarily think we are heading towards a good direction these are the only things that we striving towards

I agree totally Jeff, you have to watch these people with discernment and only take from them what's of value because, frankly, some of them seem like assholes. They might be rich but no amount of money can buy you decency. I've been getting into Russell Brand and Joe Rogan interviews lately, they're great! I like that you're tackling deeper content, keep it up! And if you want go down the click-bait route, make a vid about your take on Milo Yiannopoulos or Gavin McInnes (Rebel Media) :)

I totally agree Lynne, for me I will take only the things that are of value from these so-called "gurus" but I think at the same time, they have the responsibility to tone down their messages with social influence that they have. Yess I've been following Joe Rogan but I should also get into Russell Brand as well! I certainly want to do more in-depth content here and there, but I realise thinking about these issues too much make me a bit depressed so that I will still cover something light like food/travel vlogs to lighten the mood haha. Ohh I should keep an eye on these as well - I might do one more episode on the specifics that Gary Vee is preaching but we shall see ;)
