Logically - you could copy the files and sell them yourself, Union have no ownership of chords or chord progressions, there is no intellectual property, so there would be literally nothing stopping you from copying this pack and selling it for $5 (obviously you couldn't use their branding)
@Rock4896
@Rock4896 3 жыл бұрын
You make a good point, would pirating these even technically be illegal since they aren't copyrightable in the first place?
@davelordy
@davelordy 3 жыл бұрын
@@Rock4896 Yep, like you say they aren't copyrightable in the first place, so there are no legal protections in place to prevent the data being copied . . . the only thing Unison could protect are unique identifiers (brand name, product name, cover artwork where applicable . . . and so on). I suppose it would be like selling (via download) a folder containing loads of commonly used words in a text document, there would be nothing to claim ownership of, the words, the idea of a folder structure, the idea of a text document format, none of it could be protected . . . to push the idea to an even more ridiculous extreme, imagine I sell just one word, a single word for sale on eBay, the word 'Cake' (just $12, includes free capital 'C') . . . and then having your lawyers check eBay to see if anyone else is selling the word 'Cake', and if they do, what then, do you claim only you are allowed to sell the word !? : ) Same deal with chords.
@CrossmoorMafia
@CrossmoorMafia 3 жыл бұрын
what if I add a unique melody on top of the progression, would that count as intellectual property?🤔
@davelordy
@davelordy 3 жыл бұрын
@@CrossmoorMafia It would ! This has already been tested in courts many time . . . as crazy as it sounds even a melody as simple as two or three notes would be intellectual property . . . a good example was the Katy Perry song 'Dark Horse' (look up Dark Horse lawsuit) even though it was later overturned on appeal, she was found to have infringed on the intellectual property of another song ('joyful noise'), they both had a similar simple 3 note riff. So the short answer is . . yeah, a unique melody would create intellectual property.

Unison's sales tactics haven't changed in the year since this was posted. Like a fool I fell for part of the hard sell. The only defense I'll offer for myself and for Unison is that the basic pack and PDF that go with it are useful if you're just learning music theory. I did learn something. Was it worth what I paid? NO. Could I have learned the same thing another, less costly way? YES. DO NOT buy Unison's MIDI pack. For the price the value isn't there.
@PolaOpposite
@PolaOpposite 2 жыл бұрын
Just learn the major scale, then learn how to play diatonic triads from that scale, then transpose. This cost nothing but a small amount of time and effort. And in the end you're becoming a more complete producer/musician, and person. Then add a seventh, a ninth, a sus, a sixth, etc. Throw in a few different modes and tritone substitutions and you're on your way. Then try transcribing... taking things out by ear. Because if you can't hear it, you have no clue what you're doing, and have no business producing music. This isn't rocket science. But anything worth doing takes effort. I don't really understand why someone would want to produce music yet has no genuine interest in music. Music is a mysterious journey that is enjoyed while you're traveling on your personal path, not at the end of your travels.
@isweartofuckinggod
@isweartofuckinggod 2 жыл бұрын
I just want to put it out there that all the things this guy just said to learn are not anywhere near as complicated as they sound. Watch any basic music theory lesson on KZbin about chords and you'll have all that and more down in less than an hour. Once you learn the vocabulary a bit, get comfortable with the idea of scales, then it all clicks and everything is suddenly super straightforward. The only time it gets complicated again after that is if you decide to tackle Jazz, those guys are cray. Honestly, with music theory "a little goes a long way" is an understatement. The amount of momentum you get from just the basics is like opening up an entirely new world you didn't even know existed. I disagree with the idea that "you have no idea what you're, you have no business making music." I think making music even though you you have no idea what's going on is the single most important step in the process of learning the art. Everyone needs to develop an intuitive sense for what things work and what things don't, and if you don't allow yourself the space to do that you're just not going to end up ever feeling comfortable making anything. It's called "playing" music after all. In fact, I think there's A LOT of value in analyzing music and coming up with your own unique theories about why things work or don't work, and then trying them out to see if they hold up. Maybe don't expect success immediately, but most people already know that much. Everyone crawls before they walk, and walks before they run, and nobody expects not to fall over a lot in the process. On the point of "I don't really understand why someone would want to produce music yet has no genuine interest in music" (which I think is a separate issue completely to people who just don't know what they're doing yet): I've been in many online and offline music communities and I've noticed that there is a loud minority of people who are more into the glamor and clout of it than anything else. This is especially bad in the rap/hiphop/trap communities, but I've seen it in EDM circles as well. These type of people can get really really toxic, but they're easy to spot a mile off. If you ask them anything about making music they'll either look at you like you're speaking Greek or respond with "you gotta just feel it, ya know? Gucci." and then act like that's the greatest advice ever given. It's easy to tell when someone thinks music is made with faith and glitter. "Music is a mysterious journey that is enjoyed while you're traveling on your personal path, not at the end of your travels." This right here I wholly agree with. It's the process that's by far the most rewarding part. There's always something new and interesting to learn and explore. At a certain point it starts to feel like the songs you end up with are more of a byproduct. The joy of experimentation is infinitely valuable. I think eventually most people realize this, or they burn out and try something different, and there's nothing wrong with that.

What you're doing by using chord packs all the time, is setting yourself up for only being a producer... and never a composer or musician. If you spend the time to learn the theory, or at least learn how to play by ear, then you will naturally learn (genuinely) over time. It will be more rewarding as well. Well holy crap, I have been sitting on the fence with scaler. But your video kind of ended up being a good ad for scaler haha 4:40 - with reaper there are so many scripts and actions that can do far more than any Unison chord pack could dream of.

I tried the free pack and although I don't intend to buy the full version, I think for under 20 bucks it's really OK. It's really good for feeding Chord Potion and experimenting in that way. I bought Ultimate chord pack for only 4 dollars, but it is not as good. Every progression has to transposed down an octave unless you want c3, d3..etc.......to be your lowest note, not on piano anyway.

Do you have any other suggestions for any other chord plugins? Thanks in advance!

Chordjam's pretty interestling. As for Scaler I'd watch MG the future's videos.

The only thing you need to have in order to make chord progressions is being able to count, and being able to hear. Making basic-intermediate chords is so insanely simple, I'd go as far as to say that any chord pack at all is just completely unnecessary. If you can count, you can make chord progressions. Making them sound musical, however, is another discussion entirely. It's just that chord packs aren't going to help you with that either.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy anything from Unison Audio EVER again. Everything from them is overpriced and you can find better alternatives for cheaper. They are the shit stain of the industry.

better to just play the chords yourself. you know...like a musician. when you need a funk wah guitar part do you reach for a sample pack... or your guitar?

Ill add a positive aspect to buyng midi chord packs. They are organised in a folder and you dont have to create the midi files yourself. This can take ages especially for extended chords. I think full price for this particular midi chord pack is an absolute rip off. I payed $17 and for the time it would save me organising, creating and storing chords I'll say its fair. The actual original progressions are repeated in every key so you arn't getting a lot of original progressions.

As someone who is very well versed in theory and bought the chord pack for very cheap I am pretty happy with it, saves a few clicks when I am away from the midi keyboard, as shifting through keys and finding the specific chords is faster than Scaler, which I demo'ed extensively but didn't buy. I got it for like 20 bucks though, would never pay "full price" for it.

I would have enjoyed watching this before buying my unison pack 2 years ago. Like, the ads are still the same, still talking about how big the stuff you get, I have the unison folders, and it was not worth the money I paid for. Like, I get 2 folders, and the chords are the same. it is one big scam. Just get the free stuff they have, and use something else, or learn the Theory from KZbinrs, and listen to different people on how they do it. Enjoy.

You said it's borderline scam but also useful for some people. The video quality is not an issue because the info in the video makes it well worth watching. Some videos(not yours) are terrible so I notice every imperfection, There is a Black Friday deal for the Unison Artist Series Bundle which is a huge amount of samples(3000) that sound quite good. Could you please check it out. It's reduced from over $400 to $100 for today so it's a rush evaluation.
