Sometimes we damage it. Commit to learning new values and boundaries. Ask people who are healthy and balanced what are good proper standards, then try to address whether we have healthy values for ourselves. Then when they are clear to us we work on our self-worth so we can be firm to keep the values we set up. Heal.wounds so we don't allow our emotions to rule our mind and our standards leading us astray with false reasonings.

The red flags she talked about: 1) a person who is consistantly late. 2) a person who is ALWAYS broke. 3) when you find yourself consistantly pushing against your intuition, your internal GPS, that there is something wrong. 4) a person who has a bad relationship with their parents. A man with his mother, a woman with her father. 5) a person's relationship's with their children. 6) a person who has a negative outlook on life, people, the politics, etc. Someone who always has something negative to say.

oh man, there is this one quote from the movie "the holiday" that always spoke to me about when you are with a person you KNOW isn't good for you but you stick around anyways. it goes like this: guy asks: "why am i attracted to a person i know isn't good for me?" girl responds: " Because you're hoping you're wrong, and every time (he/she) does something that tells you (he/she) is no good for you, you ignore it and every time (he/she) comes through and surprises you, (he/she) wins you over and you lose that argument with yourself that (he/she) is not for you." when i heard that at the time, it was like an atomic bomb went off in my head...im dealing with someone like that and its like i know this person isnt being a good person towards me but then sometimes they do something that wins me over and i completely forget that they are still that same, neglectful, un-conscientious person i know. why is it easy to realize but hard to put into action?

Red Flag: And if he’s a mama’s boy, he can’t think for himself and will never put you first. Red Flag: He consults his friends about the relationship instead of talking to you first = He can’t think for himself. There will always be too many people meddling in your relationship. Red Flag: He can’t apologize or take responsibility for his mistakes. I disagree with the need to have good relationships with their parents. It matters more that both parents are good role models. If one or more parents is weak (the children have to become the parents), that’s a red flag. People too enmeshed with their parents have no separate identity and can’t think for themselves.
@jackyhines52616 жыл бұрын
That is true about the parents but what I got from that is not the parents having issues and projecting them onto the kids. I want to believe she means how do you deal with parents having issues and have you forgiven them or have you accepted how they are and moved on. I believe there are a lot of kids who have issues their parents and unhealthy relationships with their parents because of the parents, but how do you internalize it? If you haven't dealt with it or you deal with them in a negative way always blaming or judging never forgiving it'll dictate how you relate to others in a negative way. Our parents are the foundation of how we relate to others so if they teach us from all negative aspects we have to learn how to turn that around from a positive standpoint. Meaning to forgive them for not knowing better and understanding they did what they knew how with what they had or they just didn't have it to give in the first place. Our higher power teaches us to forgive and move on. That way we won't have negative belief systems that steer us in the wrong direction when it comes to love and relationships with men/ women, children, sisters/ brothers, bosses, neighbors all people. Didn't mean to go that deep but i'm speaking from experience.

I agree with everything aside from the not speaking to parents for a length of time. What if there was physical and/or sexual abuse of the parent towards the child? Just because someone has had to sever ties with a parent does not mean there is something “wrong” with them.
@TheLove2share6 жыл бұрын
missmerbella I agree. Iyanla said, what matters is how the individual “holds” that experience. Meaning: if a person hasn’t dealt with the problem in a healthy way, it will affect their relationships with everyone else. Not having a relationship with a parent is a red flag because that’s not the way life is supposed to be. So we have to know the reason for that severance & see how it will affect our relationship with the mate. Be it negatively or positively.

It's about forgiveness, no matter what someone did( I know that's a hard pill to swallow) because you interpret that as you doing some for them. That's not the case though....your lack of forgiveness towards someone who has harmed only makes your life a living hell. Whether it's with yourself or your relationships with other, or you lack of progression through life. By not forgiving people you give them way more power over you life than you might think you do. Forgiveness doesn't mean what they did to you was right. Forgiveness means you indeed there is something mentally, and emotionally wrong with that person and unfortunately you were their outlet but you are not to blame. Forgive them and forgive yourself... that's the only way to free yourself

Red Flag: Always has something negative to say about their ex's. They consistently disrespect, degrade, and speak foul of their ex and fail to mention their own faults especially when no one brought up their ex to even discuss. Just bitter Red Flag: When your significant other consistently compares you to others and advises you to be like them. They want you to be and appear how they want you to for their own pleasure or for the looks of it.

@@jojobean9260 I disagree. It's people with poor time management skills. Not accounting for traffic, or not realizing how much time it actually takes for them to get washed and dressed, etc. I used to be late to everything because I always thought I had "enough" time to do this or that, but never took the time to trip plan as truckers say....plan your time ahead.

Alicia Rains - Very true! Some people lack executive function skills or have ADD. For some, it’s a pattern of behavior they grew up learning and have a hard time breaking. Yes, it causes problems, but I’m surprised Iyanla was so dismissive of people with this issue.

Lyanla love your perspectives, I’m learning as a man, to be a better man. I laughed so hard with the “ding ding ding” red flags which are to me about gettin the fight on, and in this use, learn to trust and respect what my gut is telling me as the appropriate time to disengage or take a hike. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher.

Lots of pushback on the lateness thing - but it is a problem if it is your constant habit. And it is disrespect, even if not intentional.

You just described my brother exactly, it's harder to uninvite family, especially if they live with you. He now has cancer, living in palliative care, even though I do feel terrible for his suffering, I have to admit the home is no longer a toxic environment, for the first time there is peace, comfort, happiness in a home I wanted to flee from for years. I never realized till he was out of the house the level of destruction he caused, I have such mixed emotions because he is family yet I feel freedom and peace, it's hard not to judge myself for enjoying such relief in a time of grief as well. I do think the cancer came from his lingering hate for himself and everyone around him, he carried it in every relationship and in all aspects of his life, to live angry like that for so long just destroyed his body. I go and visit with him and still see the same angry man he just doesn't have the energy to act it out anymore, it's such a sad ending, he had a beautiful home, a loving family and so much support over the years, why couldn't he see it or embrace it will be lingering questions for rest of my life.

It would be great for mommy's to train their children early on these key points. I have 2 sons and I try my best to illustrate to them red flags!!!!! I think young ladies really need guidance. So much domestic violence starting even in high school. It is terrible! Thanks

Yes! Best advice I ever got is watch how a potential S/O talks about thier mom because eventually they'll talk about you that way. Of course it took til my late 30s to really understand and take to heart, but it's a big one!

Put this into perspective ppl, as iyanlas life story includes red flags. Be sure to work on your own red flags and urge the other person to do so whilst youre dating b4 u get into a relationship with them. Have a clear perspective on this. You are not looking for perfection, you just need to b aware.

Oh my goodness this was so good!! So true about the Red Flag on a view about a man . wish I could of seen this along long time ago . it would of unblinded me . But the great thing is now to keep alert out for Red Flags for the Future and just to listen and not to Ignor them. Thank you so much !☺🌸☺🌸☺🌸☺🌸☺
