ON ROLLS GRACIE
• THE GREATEST GENIUS OF...
There is no need to give the names of the Wrestlers who have had major success against the best of BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU. The proof and evidence is solid and there for all to see. To be clear: THE TECHNIQUES AND METHODS DESCRIBED IN THIS VIDEO CAN BE USED BY BJJ PRACTITIONERS. THE ISSUE IS THAT THE BJJ COMMUNITY IS TOO CULT LIKE TO IMPLEMENT TRAINING METHODS AND AN APPROACH THAT WOULD MAKE IT MORE EFFECTIVE RATHER THAN THE "TORTURE" IT IS TO WATCH FOR WRESTLERS LIKE MYSELF.

It seems hard for BJJ guys to understand what high-school wrestlers go through, and the intensity at which we trained and competed. Guys who join wrestling young understand that there is no team to carry you. All responsibility is yours. Great video. Wrestling six or eight guys for varsity tends to get dangerous, it becomes so fast.

This is pure gold. I experienced this myself. When i trained in BJJ I was getting dominated by wrestlers who had strong top games. Why? I was too worried about whether I was doing it "right" rather than going for the kill. As soon as I started learning about Billy Robinson and catch ss catch van wrestling i researched it and learned the old school techniques. Then i would dominate the wrestlers because then my grappling philosophy was just to "catch" a limb and then push the limb past its lever. Catch wrestling also promoted vicious riding which BJJ does not. BJJ os only goof for the guard game and when all your options are exhausted and you find yourself on your back then the guard game can come in handy

That corresponds so much with my own experience. I can't train bjj often (job, 2 kids) so I did not get lots of taps. First I was concerned about techniques and survival. I managed to reduce the amount of my losses, but still I was more about defending better dudes. Then I figured out 1) if I cannot get more sessions to get more technical, I need to make my basica moves stronger - so I started weightlifting 2) I started grappling with a goal - catch a kneebar (love kneebars). Now I was out of BJJ for 6 months (3 months of them - benchpressing, got stronger). Showed up at a gym. cought blue belt (also judo guy with + 25 kg over me) with a kneebar two times.

but I guess here in Russia there is no myth that BJJ is an ultimate grappling art. Rarely there are pure bjj-players. Rarely people start bjj with no base (sambo, judo, wrestling). I never experienced "flow rolling". Guys in here usually go for a kill, love pressure game.

A bit of background, I’m a purple belt in bjj and have found much of what you say is correct. I recently was in a class playing a tactical chess game with other purples and brown belts and did relatively well. Then came a SMALLER yet very aggressive paced wrestler/blue belt and he beat me up…. You were spot on as to why, it wasn’t his technique, it was his aggression and pace. I realized I way overthink in my rolls technically. After seeing this the next class I came with a different mentality, dialed down the technical thinking and dialed up the pace, my rolls were much improved. You truly know your stuff 🙏

That being said I think the snail rhythm you refer to is mainly gi (and not every blackbelt) BJJ its safer i would say but also wrestling gets you ready for situations in which you would usually get hurt. Disagree. I’ve wrestled all the way up into college and have since switched to Jiu Jitsu. You don’t give up points for choosing bottom in wrestling and you don’t get any points for escaping in bjj. So I don’t think you should be penalized for pulling guard.

@@skykekona-souza1927 but you receive points for sweeping your opponent, and making him go to the bottom position while you transition to the top position, clearly expressing the idea that the top position is somehow more advantageous. Otherwise, why give points to it? It makes no sense to me that if you voluntarily go to the bottom position you don't get penalized, but if someone forces you there, you get penalized. People pull guard and don't get penalized just so they can sweep their opponent and receive 2 points for being on top? makes no sense bruh.

A lot of purple belts actually know the curriculum for the most alert. Maybe even some great blue belts. The issue is that you have to go through the curriculum over and over again to grow. It’s a particularly interesting art in the fact that it’s not about information being revealed over time but mastered overtime. It’s not uncommon to be able to take private lessons from a purple belt coach.

Sayf, you’re very knowledgeable regarding Combatives in general. However regarding this deep dive into jiujitsu, you’re not there yet. I would recommend taking 200 classes in the gi at Marcelo’s school, Renzo’s school, or Murilo’s school. It’ll give you a much better understanding of the art and enable you to have a more comprehensive view. Also, the primary reason why wrestlers are so successful is because by the time they reach the UFC, all former wrestlers have accumulated thousands of hours of nogi jiujitsu training. That exposure to the principles of jiujitsu, combined with their wrestling base is what is key. If you took a D1 wrestler and facilitated an mma fight with a same weight, same age champion level black belt, the wrestler would likely get finished.

In my experience, wrestling and more specifically catch wrestling is the dominant grappling art even in no-gi BJJ. Since I've begun applying wrestling principles, such as focusing on getting my opponent to the ground and being in top position once i get them there, and using speed and surprise when possible and aggressively grinding my opponent down from top when not possible, I've had much more success especially against guard-centric BJJ players at my gym.

Much of the myth of BJJ stems from the victories of SOME Gracies. If a person is much bigger and stronger BJJ still should not be counted on. The best case in something like that is a weapon and if one does not have that, a vicious attack to the eyes. Too many people NEED to believe the glamour of fighting that the gracies advertised. No weapon! Only one person! That is not real all of the time in the street.

I'm willing to agree that with the gi, bjj definitely lacks in the aggression department, but I have to disagree with the fact that tempo does not escalate in no gi bjj. It is much more intense and fast paced, also there are more submissions available. With the gi, the reason it is much more slow paced is due to how crucial grips are in literally every position. Also the gi is useful for cardio. I would recommend people see some no gi matches, and only do no gi bjj if you're really worried about this

Hands down the best KZbin channel on the martial arts, but I’m having trouble understanding this one.. Standing - we’re really talking about Judo vs Wrestling (outside of flying armbars etc). No question wrestling gets to the ground faster and safer (not giving up back, position, etc) than Judo (that said, Judo can knock one out on the way down, which changes the argument somewhat). On the ground - This is where I have trouble following. I agree that the IBJJF point system is garbage (I do Gi, no Gi, and 10th planet stuff, and I’m now at a wrestling gym owned by the current bareknuckle champ). That said, American or Greco-Roman wrestling doesn’t make much sense to me on the ground compared to Jiu jitsu, with an exception of the turtle position, which Jiu jitsu always wants the RNC but wrestlers would totally dominate ground and pound and not think about a RNC. Every other position on the ground, Jiu jitsu seems to be 100x better. It seems like checkers vs chess, no disrespect to anyone - I again enjoy both. Time after time a good Jiu jitsu practitioner destroys a good wrestler - look at Jon Jones vs Cormeir for example. JJ is the Jiu jitsu vase and Cormier is the wrestling base (I know much more is involved than just that but hear me out). A good, striking-trained, BJJ gym (like Tristar/Firas for example) already knows about striking and defending AND they are more versed to leglocks, which wrestling NEVER has an answer for. A Jiu jitsu artist with the traits you list at the end (speed, etc) will destroy a wrestler with the same traits when the fight goes to the ground - that’s just my opinion.

Bradley Morris: The problem is that you don't understand what MMA actually is. It is GROUND and POUND on the ground. Not BJJ! Hold the man in position and pound him into submission or stoppage! The best pins and riding techniques are from wrestling! Why, because you get points to PIN! Ground and pound is so much a part of MMA, even when a BJJ submission is used, it is AFTER wrestling has worn the opponent down.

TheUmmahFightCamp first off I appreciate you responding, and respect everything you’re saying. I hear what you’re saying, but Jon Jones was doing BJJ tournaments WAY back in the day. But here’s a list of some really good BJJ UFC guys: Brian Ortega Fabrício Werdum Ronaldo Souza Tony Ferguson Charles Oliveira Demian Maia Luke Rockhold Joe Lauzon Jussier Formiga Nate Diaz Aleksei Oleinik Korean Zombie Within the last few years we’ve seen BJJ become more MMA relevant (like karate, it has definitely watered down but it’s making a come up) - the Korean zombie literally got a twister in the ring, Oleinik has what like 10 ezekiel chokes? And the Diaz Brothers breathe Jiu Jitsu. I AGREE that riding the gracies simply because they’re mainstream and “started” UFC or whatever is played out. But to say it’s not worth nothing has to be over exaggerating. I can’t just overlook what the people I listed have done in the octagon. I omitted the fact that you hit the nail on the head with what you’ve said (pace, timidity, heart, etc - it’s as if a lot of Jiu jitsu artists wanna be what we called in football ankle biters - but, it’s just too hard to turn a blind eye to it.. when I brought up Firas, it was only because I know you respect his karate perspective based on another video I saw of yours - he has video of him going against D1 wrestlers and picking off legs like it’s nothing.. even put him aside though, big names have gone against BJJ guys and lost. You know at the end of the day it comes down to who wants it more, timing, etc - I’ve literally seen dudes getting their face punched in and lock in that triangle choke and it was a wrap. On the streets and in the octagon - and I come from PG MD where grappling wasn’t respected at all. I’m just speaking from perspective and at the same time I have to make a real decision as to whether I’m going to continue BJJ in my personal career or prioritize the wrestling route, and I’m seeking your wisdom by asking all what we both said aside, if a Jiu Jitsu practitioner and a wrestler went up against each other, and they both had the same level of heart, skill, and athleticism, who do you think would win? You say wrestler, and I’ll keep that in my pocket moving forward as I’m still a young dude and don’t have nearly the experience as you.. again, appreciate your work and willingness to share it

If you can take down anybody, why not know how to finish them? He depends on ground and pound and he never finishes anyone with that. Khabib is a black belt wrestler. If he adds a black belt in jiu jitsu to his recipe, he’d be extremely scary.” I feel slow not knowing his wrestling background but whatever I’m just having a conversation with you. Spot on regarding Rolls. Thomas Sowell wrote a great book on culture(s) called, Race and Culture (race in the old understanding of ethnicity), he identified cultural receptivity, the openness to new ideas, as a key indicator to the success some groups have Rolls was a culturally receptive person, open to new ideas. Many in his family lacked the same open mindedness to new ideas, the old BJJ is complete, and needs nothing added perspective When Rolls died BJJ suffered a big setback.
