Love that you mentioned "Canadian winters" :) Yes they are cold, but honestly, our winters are a runway of cute and gorgeous winter gear. Most people might think "winter, blah" but if you love fashion, it is a forgotten season. The hats, scarves, coats, boots....the combinations are endless and just changing your scarf can make your outfit look fresh and new. I love Winter for the clothes, not to mention the break from our typically very hot and humid summers (where I live anyways) :)

I bought yarn and made a scarf. Scarves are super easy to knit, so they make a great first project and there is a vast range of yarns available! I found a nice fluffy micro fleece yarn with attached pom poms. I was by Bernat and I think it's been discontinued, I found some on eBay. I can't remember what it was called.

+DIchMcV I agree. This last few years swedish designers are really starting to embrace this. Like wool as base fabric like in our foremothers. They have mixed wool with modern materials so you can wash it in 40 degrees C. We can buy jumpers, skirts, socks, pantyhoses and leggings. Also this winter it seemed every brand had elongated sweaters to wear like tunics and dresses. The coats are using materials that can handle the moisture as well. I have never been so warm wearing so little in winter. No need for the outdoors sports wear at all.

Justine, the way that you give advice and explain your reasons is clear and to the point. It also makes me think "Of course! Why didn't I think of that!" It always makes sense to me. Also, the pencil drawings that you provided on some of the suggested types were an especially nice touch, the white pencil was a nice contrast to the gray background. They added a whimsical touch and I like them very much. Thank you for another informative video

I think I'm a pear shape and have always found coats like the first one you recommend for rectangles shapes to be most flattering. Things like motorcycle jackets just make me look blocky all over, but the longer jackets can accentuate my waist and flare over my hips. Plus they keep a bit of my legs warmer too.

To be honest it took me more than a year to find a winter coat at all that keeps me warm in our alpine winters and on X-mas markets. So I don't care at all about belts or shapes. I could even wear a duvet with hardly any difference...It's an over-oversized (normally I wear M, but this is XS and I fit 3 times into it) egg-shaped thick and long coat with a hood and it makes me look like a ton with tiny feet. I will balance that with moonboots. -So if you see a walking pad on the street, this might be me.

I find most coats are made to be so shapeless that it doesn't matter the body type, but rather the length of the "body" and the sleeve of the coat. Height matters most when choosing a coat as you want to make sure it isn't an awkward length. Waist drawstrings/belts are basically a must as they can be used to create a waist when necessary but are flattering on all figures so long as the coat is the correct length.

I think it is just a trend, not only coats but blouses are very loosely cut in many fast brand shops. If you know what suits you and you have your style, you can always opt for specialized shops or those that offer different lines.

Here in Canada, especially colder cities like Montréal, you had better not buy a figure-flattering coat because that means it's not thick enough to keep you warm! You will see girls in cute little thin coats freezing themselves in line outside bars on Saturday nights! 😂

I avoid coats with a belt/cinched waist because they make me look bulky. Instead, I scour the racks for a coat that has a natural curve at the waist. I am short, but I have long legs compared to my torso. Also, I have curves at the breast, buttocks, and hips; a smaller waist; and very wide shoulders. Finding a coat that fits everywhere is a nightmare.

As a pear shape, I like to keep my bum warm so I like going for coats that stop about a hand space before my knee. Being tall I find that it looks very flattering on me. I love coats and I got so many in different styles, materials, shapes and thickness. My biker jacket is my go to jacket for the not so cold weather. Love this video. Many notes taken! Xoxo

@Alzerri

Wenqing Meng, it depends on where in Russia you are, but in Moscow it hasn't been that cold lately. Anyway, as a native I would recommend either a fur coat or, if you don't wear fur for whatever reason, a long down jacket with a fur-trimmed hood (faux fur if fine in this case, as it's to keep your face from wind and falling snow). I usually also wear a knitted hat with a thinner scarf, but that's a personal preference. I'd also recommend some woven lined gloves, as knitted aren't as good in windy weather and leather are just stiff and cold. As for real fur, if you are ok with it and can afford it, it's very good for a colder Russian winter, as it keeps you warm even when you have thinner clothes underneath but at the same time you aren't hot and sweating. It's just a nice warm and fuzzy cocoon that makes harsh weather bearable. I usually start reaching for my furs at around -27-30 C (-25 F I guess), I think anything warmer doesn't require furs. Sorry for the unasked for advice, couldn't help myself 😊.
@Tina06019

Wenqing Meng In Russia, in Canada, in Northern New York, I always preferred a belted coat. Even in less extreme climates, belting your coat will extend the comfort zone down about 5 to 8 degrees F.

Cande Bosch glad you found it useful. As Tina said above, you'd also want something belted (I've just realized all of my winter coats have belts) and long, a knee-length is perfect. You can pay some attention to the sleeves too, they should have an elastic band of some sort, on a fur coat its harder to pull of, but some do have a draw-string type of a cuff, helps in windy weather as it tends to blow up your arms ignoring the gloves.

When I moved to Oregon from California, I needed a warm (and waterproof) coat for the first time in my life. I was so against getting a puffy coat like the ones made popular by the North Face. I found my solution- I'm a true hourglass and very busty. I found a puffy jacket that is longer, it hits right above the knees and flairs out from the waist. So it emphasizes my waist and the volume on the bottom balances my chest. Of course I love a tailored coat- single breasted of course- but I needed a waterproof coat for our outdoor lifestyle here. Just a tip for my fellow hourglass ladies- this style of puffer coat is flattering and keeps you warm and dry 👌🏼

Hersha Rele- yes same here. I am a standard size- a 6 or 8- but I felt that the puffer jackets made me look huge. I found two I like- one from Columbia and one from The North Face. I chose black and charcoal grey to look smaller and really paid attention to the silhouette: coats that come to the knee and have the bottom flare 👌🏼

Love that you mention "Canadian Winters" and it depends on what part of Canada that you live. Cities Like Vancouver, Toronto and Halifax have a milder winter than say Quebec, New Brunswick, BC and Alberta. We are fortunate enough to have some great Canadian Winter coat designers that are specific to our winters and are also fashionable. Like Canada Goose, Quartz Co. and Arc-Teryx..all Canadian made and sourced down and Coyote/Raccoon Fur (for Canada Goose and Quartz) I have both a Quartz and a Canada Goose.

Loved the video! My favorite coat right now is a very long fish tail parka. It makes me look like a long column! It has drawstrings at the hem and waist to create new shapes which is great. It totally changes the silhouette so it's like 3 different coats! I love the versatility. I also feel like these features makes this coat work for multiple body types now! Being able to draw in the waist or hem or both (or neither) is such a great feature!

I'm a pear shape and I found that pea coats look really great on me. The wide lapels pull the eye upwards and away from my hips. I have 3 pea coats (2 end below my hip and 1 ends at my knees) and I get compliments all the time. I'll probably wear pea coats for the rest of my life.

Can I suggest you make a video on how to dress for tall girls? It's a topic you always mention but never cover in detail & I would appreciate it sooo much! I'm 1,74m tall & lately I've been struggling to find clothes I feel comfortable with. I used to be a bit overweight, very pear-shaped, no problem. Now I work out so my body changed, my back is broader & my hips smaller so I'm closer to an hourglass. I have a more balanced body now but I cannot find shirts/tops that fit me in a way that flatters my figure without being too tight or too loose that I look even bigger than I am. Thanks for your good work!

Sometimes I try to balance by adding volume at the hips, with pocket, but I also like to wear an ankle length coat with a military look, it makes me feel strong powerful and fearless. Normally I wear flats but in my military coat I go all in and wear high heels. I’m normally very shy and like to dress anonymous, but in this coat nobody can avoid seeing me, and nothing can harm me. As I’m writing this I realise that I need to change my entire wardrobe from beige and black to clothes that makes me feel like this all the time. I love your channel. You are very talented and are a lovely person. I have learned a lot of little things about clothing, fabric, French clothing, etc. from you. Thank you for sharing so much with us! Two things: what do you consider to be the difference between hourglass and curvy? This seems to have changed over time where clothes labeled “curvy” used to be more for a waist substantially smaller than bust/hip, but now I find clothes with this often have a huge waistline, almost like maternity clothes. It’s very frustrating in terms of finding clothes but I think it is part of the body positive movement to make a larger waistline sound more attractive, so it is kind. Second: I genuinely appreciate your notes on proportion for petite figures. Hourglass petite is especially challenging. I also live in a very cold climate, and the idea of a short coat isn’t practical. Remember petites are smaller and we will get cold faster! I would say a smooth outside line (avoid giant quilting on the outside) and beautiful shapes is important. Also diagonal closures are somehow very flattering. Large boots with slim/skinny pants and hats with giant Pom poms can allow you to play with proportion and get a lovely look is hard to attain for average and larger size women to attain. Analyzing Asian fashion is helpful for ideas, but only a small fraction of those looks will be great on a curvy figure. Asian models tend to have a very slim, straight, flat line to their bodies, and they can do a lot of super cool things with draping that won’t look as flattering on other body types.

The jacket hits at the widest part of my hips and really makes me feel like the waist puffs up and makes me look bigger. Time to go shopping for a longer coat! But in East we have laaaarge desert with some town in it and really interesting culture;). To sum up we have a lovely country and bad government's strategies :). Sorry that my massage is long, hope to be interesting for you!

I have a beautiful black coat, just over the knee with fleece lining and embroidered roses. It also has faux fur around the hood and cuffs and a corset like back. I get compliments aboat it sometimes, but according to this thingy it wouldn't really fit my pear shaped body. How come? I am not throwing it out until it's worn down, haha. It's warm and cosey and I love that it has an almost fairytale vibe to it. So unique it doesn't blend in ever, but still sophisticated.

Can you possibly do a video on what coats or outfits you should not wear based on body type? Maybe it doesn't matter, but I have noticed I look horrible in anything longer in front and shorter in back (if it's enough of a difference to notice). I'm a rectangle and extremely thin and petite (5'3" on a good day, but I do wear heels often). This video was super.

Sorry, I know you mentioned some things here but it seems like there could be more to it and I was hoping for full length. I'll look to see if you have one and watch that in case I just missed it (entirely possible because I'm new to your wonderful channel - I love European style and mixing things up a bit; my wardrobe is solid colors, neutral for the most part and easy to work with but it's fun to add some flare with scarves, coats, and other accessories).

Could you do a video on leather jackets? I have a moto type faux leather coat (actually 2- one black, one burgendy), and I am so in love with them, but I've never worn a leather coat before (in my 30s now) and have no idea how to style it to look less rockstar and more like a mom with good style!

Could you please make a video about how to dress when you have high hips? I'm a pear shape with a defined waist, but biker jackets look terrible on me. Short jackets tend to be too tight around my high hip and make my hips look square. Boxy tops don't work on my body. Jeans is a tough one too. It's so hard to dress for this body, so I would really appreciate some advice. Your videos are superb!

Chere Justine, merci for mentioning petite figures. Please include your opinion about petites whatever the topic of your video might be :) I would just like to add that for us petite ones, furry and bulky collars, or large scarves are actually unflattering because then we look like we have no neck :P Turns out also that our narrow shoulders can throw the whole outfit off balance. Any advice on how that can be overcome? I love your well-prepared and witty videos, you are by far my favourite KZbinr :) Bisous de Belgrade

I think I am a rectangle to hour glass but i'm also petite. so it kind of makes me an inverted triangle because when people look at you from above, your shoulders tend to look wider and legs shorter.

I love coats, the ones that are fit up to waist and have a have a flare up, no matter the size of it long or short. I do like around the knees or even better high - low cut(longer at the back, shorter in the front). But longer are good too, just never the straight cut or I look like I am fat and a child or like I put on a bag over me.... I am hourglass(bust 92cm, waist 66-68cm, that one depends on the time of the day and lower part 90cm) and I am short 163cm.

I'm petite but very slim with a body measurement of 31-22-32 (would you consider that hourglass or reversed triangle?) And I find maxi or below the knee length very flattering on me. I would say petite can rock the long coat look as long as it's not too oversized and the sleeves aren't too long
