How to Lubricate a Sliding Window
When picking out a Lubricate make sure it doesn't have OIL. NO WD-40 If you spray that on a vinyl window you going to create more of a problem cause it create a mud and makes the window harder to side. So what you should use is a "dry film lubricate" so it spray on wet and it dry behind itself creating a thin dry wax layer.

I have the newer double-hung windows. After a couple of decades they became hard to move up/down. As you show I relubed the mechanism, with aspray silicone lube. I recommend people do as I did. Lightly run your finger on the spiral aluminum piece. You'll feel the sticky residue and dirt. Now, take a cloth, with rubbing alcohol, on it. Use that to clean the old lube/dirt off. Just run the cloth up/down a few times. Be careful to use a couple of fingers to hold the bottom in place (or You'll have to reinstall/rewind it). You'll be able to feel when the piece is cleaned. "Now", you can spray the silicone lube. Note: if your windows are difficult to remove, from the frame, it's because the "aluminum hinge pins are sticking". I had a couple break while fixing my windows. I live near the Wallside factory, went there and they gave me some replacements. I don't know about other companies, but Wallside uses two different length pins. Take one with you so you get the correct length.

I searched for a video on lubricating a sliding HORIZONTAL window and this video was recommended for some reason. You're not using the horizontal obviously. This is a good video. My problem is I've tried about 3 different kinds of silicone bases sprays and they don't work for these heavy horizontal sliders. I'm hoping to find a different lubricant that will work for my situation. Maybe I'll find something in a different video but in the meantime, maybe someone can suggest something. Thanks

Thanks so much for posting this. I already have a new can of WD-40 Specialist Dry Lube with PTFE. The can states it is good for window tracks, but in the list of ingredients it includes petroleum distillates. Safe to use on: wood, paper, fabric, leather, metal, and most plastics (except clear polycarbonate and polystyrene). Do you think I can use this? If not, I will gladly buy the Sprayaway.

The makers of WD-40 insist there is no petroleum, or any of it's distillates in it's product. I can easily imagine, it's _propellant_ being the culprit. The softening of vinyl acetate, which would probably be the Isopropanol to make it spray. (Isopropyl alcohol as a desiccant and Butane as the pressurizer gas, which is petroleum-derived.) You can buy the liquid by itself, in squirt bottles. Interesting theory to test- before condemning an otherwise trusted product.
@MoeRubenzahl
@MoeRubenzahl 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's correct for their "multi-use product," which is what most people think of as WD-40. The company says, "While the ingredients...are secret, we can tell you what it does NOT contain. WD-40 Multi-Use Product does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, graphite, or chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)." Also see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD-40#Formulation. Regardless, I think we would all agree it's not a very good lubricant for vinyl windows."

Damn! Before finding your video, I just watched a similar KZbin video where the persons advised to use WD-40 sprayed on a paper towel, then she wiped the springs (to remove grease) then she used a tube of Lucas White Lithium Grease to wipe down the springs. So if you don't advise using WD-40 to remove the old (in my case 20-year old dried grease), then what are your thoughts on using the Lucas White Lithium Grease if I cannot find this particularly lubricate used in your video?
@seanyahn7158
@seanyahn7158 3 жыл бұрын
I would highly advise against a lithium grease for your springs or windows. Try to find a dry film lubricant at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Look on the directions to see if it is good for the window type you have whether it’s vinyl, aluminum, wood or other composite type. Use a degreasant to get the build up off, then once clean use the dry film spray lubricant for optimal performance. Hope this helps.

I'm going to get some of this stuff --- but here's the problem I've had a few times. The window goes up & down just fine...but it's dirty. So after lifting the bottom sach up a few inches, then tilting it out. Then pulling the top sash down a bit...and tilting it out... then cleaning the windows....then snapping them back in...starting with top, and finishing with the bottom...then at this point, ONE of them has completely seized up and WILL NOT MOVE without a GREAT deal of force! WHAT IS THE PROBLEM??? I have a few of these windows and more than just one of them has given me this issue (more than once).

Can’t find this Sprayway product at local retail. Also, I think you should revise and modify your statement about WD-40 which is a Brand Name and not a specific product. WD-40 actually sells a “Dry Lubricant “ 🤷‍♀️ Thus, since WD-40 makes and sells a Dry Lubricant product wouldn’t such a product be acceptable use on vinyl windows?

So when you've tried all kinds of products silicone, graphite etc. The ability to slide is worse. How do you deal with that! All these people supposed to be showing cleaning the tracks are instead showing how to clean the bottom tray, which shouldn't need any how-to videos. But no one is showing how to clean the side tracks where the problem of windows going up & down exists.
@seanyahn7158
@seanyahn7158 2 жыл бұрын
If you have used a petroleum based product and the window is now hard to slide, use a grease cutter like Dawn dish soap or other degreasing agent to clean it up. After that, simply spray a dry film lubricant if you have a vinyl window that you’re working on.

Just had the same problem with my vinyl double hung windows. Watched a few videos the tried things out. Basically open the bottom window and with dish soap water and a paper towel clean out all 3 walls of the track. With a little scrubbing all the rubbed in dirt should come off. It your window is double hung do both sets of tracks. Lubricate as Sean says. If your windows tilt out clean& lubricate from the top side too. With the windows in the up position move them up and down until running smooth or reclean if needed.

@@seanyahn7158 Vinyl windows are designed to fail irreparable garbage. Everything about them is just a marketing scam that delivers an inferior product. As for spring balances, they’re much more difficult to operate than a counterweighted sash. You can operate a weighted sash with the pressure of a single finger.
@seanyahn7158
@seanyahn7158 2 жыл бұрын
Barry, you obviously have an opinion that you are entitled to, but you don’t have any factual basis on your claim. Do wood windows not fail? How about aluminum windows, do they not fail? A weighted sash balance system from the early 1900’s is what you claim to be superior? There are cheap vinyl windows, and then there are very high quality vinyl windows that come with great warranties that cover just about everything related to hardware and glass failures. So why not use a great vinyl window?
