America's Founding Fathers had their own jobs outside of governing. But today's politicians have made a career out of refusing to find common ground and searching for enemies within.

I agree Simon. I’ve been saying for years now that intent of the founders was a few years (one senate term at most) and then it’s back to private life. It’s supposed to be public service not career politician. Good point too regarding the impact of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The intentional lack of term limits on many offices held by the early founding fathers inclines me to think that they DID intend long term politicians (especially for senate/president). However, they typically didn't get paid and there were few to no bureaucrats. The idea that politicians should get paid was that so poor people could afford to be in political office: only the rich could afford to do a job and not get paid. The problem today is with parties more than full time politicians. AND far more with full time government workers: unelected bureaucrats are the ones who actually run the US. This is really what the founding fathers never wanted: unelected bureaucrats. They and lobbyists are parasites.
@shortsideburns8682
@shortsideburns8682 2 жыл бұрын
However, these unelected bureaucrats are able to hold their positions and wield their undue influence because they develop relationships with career politicians. Politicians who are going to have to leave office anyways because of term limits will be more likely to hold bureaucrats accountable (assuming they ran for office with public service in mind and not just for a power grab).
@1stGruhn
@1stGruhn 2 жыл бұрын
@@shortsideburns8682 history shows that just isn't true. It is nearly impossible to fire bureaucrats, I've worked for the government before and left because the lazy and harmful employees just sued to get their jobs back every time they were fired and they won. Were it easy to fire government employees then maybe you'd be correct. But as such, no one is held accountable... and even if folks were easy to fire, the odds would be that the ones responsible for whatever atrocity that governments always do, wouldn't be fired but some patsy would take the fall.

Good take. There was an interesting quote from Heinlein as the author insert character Lazarus Long about politicians, something to the tune of them having to guard their sworn word at all times. Because in his estimation that is the only thing a politician had for sale in his opinion was his guarantee or promise or something to that effect. Don't know why but this reminded me of that quote. Time enough for love is the book buyer be warned it is LOOONG.

For real though. I'd vote for him. (Simon, I sincerely hope that you or someone like you runs for president -- but I sure hope that the prospect doesn't corrupt you or tarnish your ability to spread one of the most important messages of our generation)

(God, I sure as hell hope Simon doesn't turn out to be some sociopath that just happens to be intelligent enough to clue in to what people really want, all in a bid to run for presidency for self-gain. God, that would be pretty awful.)

Career politicians are toxic for everyone. The worst person to put in office is the one who asked to be put there. The best candidates that we can elect are the ones not seeking out those positions of power and have demonstrated amazing leadership. Aka Simon Sinek

Hey YOU, incredible person reading this...The truth is you are confident and good enough already with who you are, where you are at and what you have right now to have the success you want in life. Don't let others define what “success” is for you. Get up, learn that skill and go after it! I believe in you so much! Have an awesome day! - Love, Nat ❤️

If the framers of the Constitution didn't mean for career politicians, they should have put that in the Constitution. They thought about it when they gave the President term limits and the Supreme Court and some justices lifetime appointments.

I'd venture to guess 70% of the U.S. population is hardcore Left or Right and 30% of us in the middle that can be swayed. The 30% is what wins/loses elections for both parties.

I really don't think so. I'll have to check if that's what the data really backs up - but I think that the majority of us are much more middle of the road, with like 10-20% extremely vocal minorities on the far fringes and most of us are stuck in the middle choosing between 2 absolutely shitty extremes

We need to clear house on all of the career politicians. I'd add Sanders, McConnell, Schumer, McCarthy, Graham, Hoyer, Romney, Feinstein, Waters, etc. make every branch have term limits. Not necessarily because of dislike, but when you spend that much time away from the people, you cease to be able to serve them appropriately.
