He didn't just try to be like Floyd but he tried to fight like him too but he didn't understand why it worked for Floyd and not him. He was supposed to fight Omar Figueroa in August, and for that fight (which never happened) he trained at my gym in Colorado Springs and I talked to him and his team quite a bit. But even 2 weeks out from fight night he had a sizable belly and wasn't training as hard as he should have, spending more time in a small sauna than on the bag or the pads. He then pulled out of the fight claiming "mental health problems", he might have had some issues who knows, but I think his team knew they weren't training hard enough and they were gonna lose, so they pulled out.

It should be noted that the Maidana Broner faced was not the same one that struggled with Ortiz and lost to Kahn, this was after training with R.Garcia. He had all the toughness of old, plus a little more technical proficiency. But yes, something switched off in Broner after that fight.

Great video. Broner in his prime was definitely my favorite fighter behind Floyd, but Broner’s issue was that he had too many holes in his game that he didn’t care to fix. His power didn’t translate well to higher weight classes. He was flat footed, which didn’t work for him. His wasn’t good at using Philly shell. After Maidana, he became scared to throw punches. He was definitely an entertainer though, he introduced a ton of casual fans to boxing. The only guys who have been that entertaining & introduce a ton of casuals to the sport since then has been Deontay Wilder. Tank & Garcia are popular with casual fans as well though!

Couple his fast track division hoping with lack of discipline (and matchmaking) you have a problem. Wasn’t his “ego” He campaigned at 130, moved up to 135 to take a strap, defended it once. Immediately jumped to 147 to take Paulie's strap. He fought Maidana the very next fight. Dropped down to 140 for a couple fights and then moved back up to fight Porter. Styles make fights and he just wasn't the same at '47 but that's where the big fights were at.

I think his biggest problem was not bringing in new people to his camp. I think he got as far as his raw potential would take him but he could never break through as a superstar because he didn’t put in the extra work and evolve. Floyd told him a while ago that he needs better footwork and he never improved. 2023 Broner still fights the same way he did in 2013. He also never brought in new coaches to help him develop. I get trying to stay loyal to the guys that got you there but if they aren’t pro level coaches you have to make a change. At the top level of boxing it takes more than just getting in shape for your fights. You must commit and stay in shape to maximize your physical ability. Floyd understood this better than most.

He was the whole package. Had everything from speed to power. However, he made the big mistake of drastically changing his style in order to mimic Mayweather's and that ruined him. An experienced fighter like him should've known how difficult the philly shell guard is to execute let alone master. Also, he was more interested in looking tough and would make big errors in defense. His cockiness wasn't just on the surface like Ali or Mayweather but also in his mind and that made him commit even bigger mistakes in defense. For some reason, he was really fascinated by Mayweather's insane ability to win rounds despite minimal volume and in trying to mimic that as well, made the worst possible alteration to his style. Another very overlooked aspect of Broner's downfall is that his power didn't essentially carry over to Welterweight and putting on more muscle only made him slower.

I know a couple of fighters who are not really talented and do not have the tools to make it big. But still they live inside the gym, keep getting their faces busted, because it is at the end of the day a paying job. They aint got much else. So to be blessed with a talent like that and an opportunity to really make serious money out of it is something Broner surely took forgotten. I actually have met Broner's god-uncle. It was quite mind blowing, but for what it is. his god-uncle told me Broner won't change his style of boxing even if he knows he's losing. its something that troubles everyone around Broner, but Broner will do what he wants to do. breaking his ties with Mayweather was too weird since Broner basically attempted to copy Mayweather's defensive fight style even though Broner was still in his prime as an athlete. I don't see Broner turning his career around since it's a little too late imo. the current top fighters in the welterweight class is great despite the top two fighters not coming to an agreement to fight each other. One thing I have to disagree with you about is that Broner ever showed good defense. He planted his feet in concrete and refused to move.
