@@NamelessKing1597 Agreed. It's too short on gameplay hours for it to be its own. Still an amazing expansion though.

@@xkristixx It's not just the gameplay hours. A big part of why its weirdness works is because the classic Tolkien-esque fantasy setting of the rest of the game gets you so deep into your comfort zone. Neither Oblivion nor The Shivering Isles would be as good if they weren't a package deal.

Good point! The main story of Oblivion is already full of chaos, then the Isles take the character's journey into an even greater impression of craziness
@NamelessKing15973 жыл бұрын
Fittingly I agree and disagree at the same time. Oblivion isn't crazy, it's just slightly off. Its setting is so classic and comforting on the surface with craziness and chaos underneath, the Shivering Isles brings the chaos that's already there to the surface so it provides a stark contrast without feeling out of place.

My thoughts exactly, it played to Oblivion's strengths so to speak. The awkwardness of Oblivion's NPCs fits in well with the Shivering Isles setting.

That sounds like a really cool idea, but that would encourage Bethesda to join companies like Rockstar in simply riding on their success from 10 or 20 years ago by simply milking GTA online until it's dead (they're definitely trying with ESO) or "remastering" beloved games, then abandoning the production of new games if they don't produce financially groundbreaking results as fast as possible.

Maybe Haskill mantled Sheogorath, but ultimately failed to stop Jyggalag. Like, he did everything that the Hero of Kvatch did, but when the final battle against the Prince of Order came, our dry-witted friend was slain or defeated. The Grey March finished, and when the real Sheogorath came back to his nonsenses, he turned Haskill into a vestige as a reward for giving it a good try.

I sort of fancy the idea that the Shivering Isles houses so many different beings that are associated with other Deadric/Aeadric entities because they saw him as a more powerful master in some way. Like, in lore we know that Sheogorath challenged the various other Daedric Princes (Hircine/Boethiah, Vearmina, etc.) & basically one upped them at their own games. So after some of the servants of these Princes saw/heard about it they were like "Yo, that Sheogorath is legit." or whatever. Alternatively i guess Sheo could have just nicked some of them from their home realms as sort oc a 'salt in the wounds' sort of act after besting their Princes. Don't know, just a fun explanation i thought about.

This video might be 2 years old & probably not important but I wanted to comment on the difference between souls & spirits in Christianity - which isn’t a one to one for Elder Scrolls lore but probably had some influence. The easiest way I was taught to remember the difference is that all living things have a spirit (the essence of being that allows for experiencing & comprehending the physical world) but only people have a soul (the essence of God within all humans that gave us life & sentience). Hope that helps someone lol

You could almost compare the Freudian Superego, Ego, and Id to Hermaeus Mora/Apocrypha, Mortals/Nirn, and Sheogorath/Shivering Isles. Hermaeus Mora represents the perfect ideal of infinite knowledge and understanding Sheogorath represents the REAL chaotic madness that is the physical biological mind And the mortals of Nirn are stuck in the middle, literally torn apart from either side by infinitely powerful forces of nature.
