I like to think of Namira a bit differently. Namira is my favorite daedric prince. She’s so complex and mysterious. But my love for Her aside, I have a really hard time figuring out why She’d have ANY worshippers. Well, maybe a few insane sorts who love rolling in trash or eating maggots, never bathing, and wearing pre-ripped denim. Whatever. I just think almost no one would revere Her. Even people with very icky, taboo inclinations… who would want to worship Her when She does nothing for you but maintains your grossness? So I like to think of her differently. (Especially since her realm seems relative to whoever seeks it. After all, would a bosmer find cannibalism inherently disgusting?) If you’re someone who has natural interests, inclinations or instincts that your culture or society condemns, if you feel othered or alone, like everyone judges you cruelly… She is one one who comes to you with words of acceptance. She soothes your anguish by insisting that yes, your people reject you, but She doesn’t. She thinks those parts of you that keep you up at night are exactly what makes you *you* . She sees your darkness, your flaws, your abnormalities and blemishes… and tells you that you are Perfect. That you need to embrace yourself as you are, as She does, not seek redemption or improvement. Because, to Her, you are wonderful. I find that much more seductive and intriguing. I can see why people would worship Her. It would definitely be a certain type of person, but it makes so much more sense. And that’s also how Enola tries to draw the Dragonborn in, with a sweet, seductive, consoling tone. Namira sees you. She accepts you. Just accept yourself, and She will bless you. But I dunno. That’s just me. 😅 Edit: To be clear, I am absolutely NOT saying that Namira is good or even kind. Far from it. I just love studying cults and the like, my favorite part of said study being trying to figure out just why people were drawn to them. Daedric Princes in TES are just an extension of that interest.
@quirkynoms75793 жыл бұрын
This is how I see Namira as well. And in that, she honestly comes across as one of the more genuine daedric princes. She doesn't demand traditional worship or subservience like Molag Bal or Boethia. She simply ask that you embrace the ugly and/or filthy sides of yourself, and she will cherish you.

I'm kinda disappointed that Namira just became another Life and Death deity, and I prefer to think of her more as a source of wrathful vengence for the dregs of society. Raising people as Zombies to chase after the living, or a horde of Spiders hiding in a cave, ready to overwhelm a cocky adventurer. Nocturnal may help petty thieves find safety in the shadows, but Namira embodies what goes bump in the night.

Vampirism was created specifically by Molag Bal, as a big FUCK YOU to Arkay, basically. He sexually assaulted a priestess of said god and his blood dripped onto her brow, creating the first vampire. I sort of imagine her as darkness but not on the physical sense. I mean, her realm might be physically dark too given that it's called the Scuttling Void, but for me personally at least, I liken her darkness to all things taboo. I think certain creatures are associated with her because taboo disgusts people much in the same way that those creatures disgust us. Cannibalism isn't the worst taboo IMO, but it's a very bad and serious one nonetheless.
@Agentlefox2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! She's the antithesis to being, and that makes disgust a natural reaction. She's like a naked singularity. She shouldn't be, and she contains the potentials that can't exist, but she does, and because of that, she is the whispered call of the void. I think of her as being one of three eldeitch horrors. Hermeus Mora, the spirit of could have been, Namira the spirit of shouldn't be, and Mephala the spirit of all that might be. Its only normal to go crazy and corrupt looking into the infinitely changing maw of non-existence

Thinking of the most charitable interpretation of Namira. She is humility. To know that all souls are nothing, and to nothing they rightly return. The repulsive things of her worship are meant as signs for prideful life, for they believe they are better than the shit, the slug, the sludge, when this is all they truly are. Her cannibalism does the same: there is equality among all things, nothing is sacred, for it all comes from and goes to the same void. This is the death of pride, to remember that you too will one day be food for the things which crawl beneath your feet. Thus the lowly, the poor, the grotesque are well loved, for they are closest to their mother who is Nothing. A mother who seeks that all souls return to her bosom, the bosom of humility, made manifest in the effacement of the self. True freedom, true divinity, true enlightenment, comes from the death of the self. Like Lorkhan, to die to yourself that others may live. To sacrifice even one's own soul is the greatest of acts. To become nothing is to become pure spirit. This is why the elves will never attain divinity - they are proud, and hold themselves too great, denying in their every thought the fullness which they seek. I'd love to be an elder scrolls theologian. I love thinking of the daedra as things completely misunderstood by mortals. I think the suggestion about Namira having dominion over aetherius is more right on than they realize.
@Agentlefox2 жыл бұрын
That is definitely a valid interpretation, but I think it kind of sidesteps the issue of Naming trying to expand her sphere and bring everything further down than it even is. Filth is one level, death is another level, and then below that is straight up non-existence, or the removal of potential.
@jamestitus4722 жыл бұрын
@@Agentlefox i suppose, but interestingly, the Christian mystic Jan Ruusbroec posited in the 13th c. that darkness/void of God is actually the font of potency; its inherently generative, and paradoxically the summit of both rest and work.
@jamestitus4722 жыл бұрын
Ofc even saying that, i suppose points out its absurdity. Elder Scrolls is far too rooted in gnostic ideas for other christian mysticism to work very well.
@Agentlefox2 жыл бұрын
@@jamestitus472 I kind of think of her being like certain interpretations of the demiurge, where her entire existence and power is tied into being the dark part or dark half of the heart of God, so while she wants to eat everything, she'd have to consume herself to achieve that goal, and God(in this case the soul of Anuiel.) The two being inseparable for existence on that level to function, its an ouroborous situation, part and parcel to the kalpic cycle.

Awesome video! :D I feel inspired to comment from my shared account (the picture isn't me, sadly)! Two things: 1) I'm not sure that Namira intends for the suffering she inflicts to truly be "good for you"; that's more Lorkhan's thing. Influenced by Lorkhan, Boethiah wants people to overcome their struggles, and Malacath wants his followers to stay outcasts but only so that they can be the strongest, whereas Namira wants her worshipers, like the Reachmen, the cannibals, or Weedle, to rationalize why they should not escape their perpetual suffering, or should persist in their repulsive or taboo behavior, by superficially appealing to their ego, claiming that they are "more worthy" or "exceptional" than others by continuing down the path they are on. The Reachmen are right to listen to Lorkh and use conflict as a teacher, but to appease Namira they take this to an extreme that keeps them stuck in a perpetual cycle of pain and suffering without any real hope of improvement, because Namira doesn't believe in "improvement": only corruption. 2) I wonder if you could do a podcast about Argonian mythology and cosmology at some point. I did a blog post analyzing the one Argonian myth that we have so far, which you are more than welcome to read here: elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:Webspidrman/An_Analysis_of_%27Children_of_the_Root%27:_Revelations_about_T.E.S._Cosmology . The myth provides a lot of interesting insights into the Argonian worldview, and their creation myth differs more substantially from others than people give it credit for, especially in that "stasis" seems to be entirely absent and "change" ever-present. So is Anu's stasis an illusion? Anyway, I hope you find inspiration in what I wrote! And I would be honored/honoured if you read my blog post! :)

There seems to be quite a few parallels one can draw between Namira and Dhumavati (from esoteric Hindu practices). Such as Dhumavati often portrayed as an old, ugly widow, and is associated with things considered inauspicious and unattractive in Hinduism. In ES, Namira is considered one of the oldest spirits in existence. Another parallel is the fact that Dhumavati is said to manifest herself at the time of cosmic dissolution (pralaya) and is "the Void" that exists before creation and after dissolution. Though another parallel can be drawn to Nirṛti: a Hindu goddess, personifying death, decay and sorrows.

The 1st Era part of Namira's story is only important because Weedle was a Bosmer (the Bosmer Monarchy heralded the 1st Era) and last heir in line for anything of value from his royal house. meaning he would never amount to anything by playing by the rules. he expected a good bargain from Namira and kept begging her ceaselessly for the things he wanted. until he could literally not speak and plead from his dried-out throat. when Weedle was reduced to his most pitiable state she relented and gave him her blessings.

I loved the direction Scott was hinting at going towards but never fully did, Namira's connection to the Void and the concept(s) of Sithis and Padomay and if you dig just a little bit deeper and tap into your inner lore nerd, her possible connection to the Night Mother, yes the NIGHT MOTHER and her Dark Brotherhood. For years I've pondered the idea and I've seen it crop up quite a few times on several sub reddits and forums. IMO, her connection to Sithis, The Night Mother, and The Dark Brotherhood is far more interesting and IMO feasible than that of Mephala somehow being connected to Sithis, The Night Mother, and the Dark Brotherhood. The Dark Brotherhood is far more of a "Death" cult than a "Murder" Cult in terms of their Religiosity, if that makes sense. Returning souls to the hungering void who feels it is their rightful owner and such, sounds familiar? Cheers! Please leave your thoughts.

*Namira is the goddess of Spirits.* The world of the flesh has no meaning to her, not really, and she is either incapable of or unwilling to see the flesh past the spirit. This is why she is the goddess of the creeping things, ugliness, and the outcast. This is why the physically marred and disabled are hers, alone. She sees the true self of them all, the dim et'ada beneath that yearns for freedom from its suffering mortal cage. The twist is that there is no freedom, not really. The Dreamsleeve sucks down the mortal et'ada, purging it of memory and physicality but forcing it again to suffer... unless, of course, one embraces the Void and breaks the cycle. Her imposition of physical corruption through disease and malformity is a message - _the physical is irrelevant. A toy, to play with for gods and mortals alike, to be corrupted, bloated, burnt and discarded, and to be replaced anew._ *Namira is the goddess of Zero-Summing.* Some may believe that CHIM is the the true ascension to godhood (become the Godhead, influence the dream one lives in) but Namira denies this. Nothing has meaning, for the hungering blanket of the Darkness Without covers all. One who has Zero-Summed has broken the cycle; one who has achieved CHIM asserts a mortal will over nothing, and pats themselves on the back. Someone who has CHIM'd may have realized that their own meaninglessness because they are just a Dream, and therefore they take control of the dream... but to Namira, the Dream itself is meaningless. They have taken control of nothing, congratulations. Their hand has closed around empty space, and they hold tight with joyous tears in their eyes as a new Godhead of the meaningless nothing encircled and embraced by the Darkness. *Namira is the goddess of the Obliteration of the Self.* One could assert that Mortals give meaning to things; in doing so, they give meaning to nothingness - and this is the corruption and creeping truth of Namira. Assigning meaning to nothing is a paradoxical act that serves only to make nothingness meaningful. It is cannibalistic self-denial of all mortality writ large: "My meaninglessness has meaning, because I deny my meaninglessness". One denies the truth of oneself, and pursues a comforting lie. To a mortal, cannibalism is the consumption of another, but to an Ur-dra, cannibalism is the consumption of mortality by mortality. The reveling that results is a cruel mockery of reveling in the self-assigned meaning that denies the true nothingness of individuated existence. *Namira is the goddess of Revulsion.* To conceive of such thoughts is revulsive. It is against the "order" of things - not just the order imposed by LKHN and the Aedric architects, but the order imposed by the Daedra and the cosmic Celestials. Even Namira's oversight of the Dreamsleeve imposes an order on things... and breaking this cycle, this order, sparks a natural and incredibly strong revulsion in all et'ada. "What did we build this for?" They ask. "Why are we so diminished? Why did so many suffer and die, only to build a world of suffering and death?" And Namira's hungering void licks its drooling lips, feeding on the least of all creatures - the tiny, dwindling et'ada of insect, grub, worm, parasite. In this way, Namira is the goddess of Nothing - and in *that* way, she is the goddess of Everything.

I know it isn't canon, but the Beyond Reach quest mod for Skyrim explored Namira a bit and gave some interesting implications through one of the npc's. You also go to the Scuttling Void, and it's full of gory displays and giant spiders sitting still on clifftops kinda peering down at the path you go through. There are some displays that are I guess copies of some of the Ayleid flesh arts. According to the npc, her plan seems to involve the adamantine tower, and I guess trying to sort of set up a way for one of the mortal culture's interpretation of Padomay to usurp the dreamer. The way I've been conjecturing about the whole repulsiveness aspect is maybe a bit too simple. Basically, when one is repulsed by something, they want to get away from it immediately. You might say 'create a void', or if you really want to reach, maybe 'stir the sithis/padomaic'. What set me on the idea was how the npc described the horrific displays throughout the Scuttling Void as 'spectacles' meant to grab attention. With the mod's worldbuilding, sort of and also that Namira never contacts you directly about any of her plans, it gave me a sense of dread I find sorely lacking in every daedric prince interaction between Oblivion and Skyrim. It was the first time I found a daedric prince scary lol.

I kinda thought the Staff of the Everscamp was Sheo trolling Namira, hence replacing her statue with himself.

Feels like Smeagol would be associated with Malacath and Gollum would be all about Namira.

She represents any darkness within mortals. It's a good thing to accept it about yourself. But it is also something that must be controlled. Knowing there is something about yourself that isn't good that you know about yourself. Fine. But one must control it keep it tame. Not fall into your vices. I'd say she's more of a test. Take Naruto at the waterfall of truth when he confronted himself. He had to accept that he had hatred. Had anger. But in excepting it. Also in not letting it control.

The whole suffering and being an outcast aspect of her sphere is different from say malacath or boethiah because they want you to overcome challenges and be strong while namira wants you just to suffer and waste away

Idk about Malacath. The way the orcs have lived seems to leave very little room for growth and often seem to fight the things that lead to a well developed society. Even if u look at Ogrims, Goblins, or other ostracized races they seem to be very stagnant following Malacaths rule.

I like the idea that insects, rot, death etc. are not part of Namira's domain because they are disgusting and repulsive, but these things are inherently repulsive to Mortels because they fall under Namira influence. Namira's essence is so anti life and flourishing that is causes primordial repulsion from all sentient forms of life. i would say she is best described as a parasitic entity, chipping away at all forms life and potential, corrupting souls into rotten hopeless husks of their former selves. Some Daedra view mortals as pawns, toys, or useful pests, Namira seems to view them as food, devouring their hopes, humanity, and potential into nothingness, spreading the void into the pocket of existence.

I feel Namira is similar to the Japanese Concept of Kegare which is the Japanese term for a state of pollution and defilement, important particularly in Shinto as a religious term. Typical causes of kegare are the contact with any form of death, childbirth (for both parents), disease and menstruation, and acts such as rape. Kegare is not a form of moral judgment, but rather a spontaneous reaction to amoral natural forces. Whether the defiling was caused by a deliberate act, as for example in the case of a crime, or by an external event, such as illness or death, is secondary. It is therefore not an equivalent of sin

Hey if we are gonna go into Arkay and how he was a mortal, can we maybe get a trinimac podcast with the theory of him being three of the dietys?

That beggar could have chosen to become a grotesquely powerful version of a vampire, then invoked pity, or simply will someone to disregard him. O.P. Indeed
@moobles29983 жыл бұрын
The real question is not whether he could, but rather... are we certain he hasn't already? The power to be disregarded is powerful, incredibly so, probably enough to not be written about. The only reason the book was written in the first place, was because he previously was a prince, after a few decades, do you think anyone will care enough about him to continue to write stories?

If was an embodiment of the Void, I would encourage every being in existence to stop struggling and degrade and decay so that the existence would decompose. Like the thermodynamic death of the universe. I would want that. Because all this things existing and doing things is disturbing and I won't want to be disturbed in my Void.
