Think of the Bolt EUV as the Prius V of the small EV set. Although GM calls this an Electric Utility Vehicle (hence EUV), this Bolt is still lacking a critical feature for some: all wheel drive. I'm surprised that Chevy didn't find a way to stick at least a small Prius e-AWD sized motor in the back for snow-belt shoppers. That said, the rest of the Bolt is certainly what Bolt buyers have been asking for. Unfortunately, this year we'll be getting a ton of aggressive competition in America. Is the Bolt Maxx up to it?

@@steamtorch - summer range - at less than freeway speeds - easily approaches the EPA number. If your daily drive is city miles at speeds up to 50 mph, you can push 300 miles. Hey Alex, love your EV episodes. I also do reviews but with a different style, which is good to see different viewpoints. One thing I wanted to correct you on is the DC Fast Charging. I was on a media call with GM folks and I asked one of the engineers the question of max charge rate. The official answer I was given was that the highest rate of pull with the new designed Bolt EV and EUV, both MY2022's, is 150 Amps. Since they are based on a 400v architecture, if you do the math, that equates to 60kW. So that is up +5kW from the 2021 and older versions. I also confirmed this during a few days I spent with my media car, a 2022 Bolt EV, and was able to see 59kW max from a hard regen (going fast and braking hard with one-pedal driving engaged). So the 55kW you state is a bit off. I know 5kW is not much, but it is better than no increase and an improvement over the previous years. I will be getting my hands on the EUV in a week for several days and will see if it too pulls this kind of DCFC. My opinion before and I don't see why not for these two newer models is similar to yours. Good reliable BEVs with decent long range and fast charging capabilities at a very value price point against what else is out there. I personally think GM has done well with these and love the refresh of the Bolt EV. Keep up the great work and with your subs, I can see this is a full time gig for you. For me, just part time to promote EV adoption.

As always, another great review. This looks like a winner for folks who need an EV with extra room around town. We have a Tesla Model 3 and a NIRO PHEV and love them both. I do wish my NIRO had one pedal driving as I like that setup, but the paddles on the back of the wheel are very good too as they allow you to opt for coasting when you are on the highway which is better than the deceleration always kicking in like the TESLA. This might replace my wife’s CRV soon!!!

Spot-on review, as usual. I can't wait for you to drive the Ioniq 5 and Ariya. I know they will both be bigger and more expensive, but I'm used to a CR-V. This car is just a little too thin for my frame. The EUV obviates the need for the Bolt EV. I wish Chevy would have used the extra six inches to stuff a bigger battery into the car to push the range over 300 miles. Once the new fed tax credits kick in, this car will sell much better than the competition based on lower price and automated driving options. GM can build world-class EV's, as I have personally experienced with my 2013 Volt.

@@dennislyon5412 and a screaming deal. Ska-reamin’ Also of note: all but the most expensive EVs are drastically slower than the Bolt. The tesla is faster, but in a different price class. But all the rest are slower. It’s a niche that only the Bolt fills.

@@kipamore Drastically slower? Hardly. The Kia Nero EV, Hyundai Ioniq EV, and Hyundai Kona EV are about half a second slower, and the Soul EV maybe a little more than that. Those are not huge differences in real-world driving, and that's just looking at Hyundai/Kia. The Mustang Mach-E is much faster than the Bolt, but admittedly pricier. The European luxury brands no doubt have some models, too. The Bolt's performance is quite good, better than most ICE-drivem cars, but only about average for an EV.
@kipamore
@kipamore 3 жыл бұрын
@@markmiller3279 True, but the Bolt occupies a lonely space among other the EVs, as far as 0-60 per dollar spent. Though it may seem laughable, I chose the Bolt as a sort of Suburban Stealth Muscle Car. Because it’s silent, and because of the soccer mom plainness, it attracts zero attention on the road. And that means you can drive it like a complete asshole, which I do. I came out of a Fiat 500 Abarth, which made such a fuss zipping through traffic you ended up being afraid to floor it. In the Bolt, you can mat it all time, every time. It’s quite freeing. Anyway, many EVs are substantially faster, but substantially more expensive. The ones that are cheaper (Leaf) are substantially slower. Right now I’m on the stock eco tires, and both will break loose pretty much at will. When spring arrives, I’m leaning toward smaller diameter stickier tires, to get even more cowbell about of this turd.

Very much appreciate the visuals of an activated rear turn signal! Amber and brightness are almost must haves for me, and often I have to wait 'til I test a new model myself because few videos show rear blinkers. Your quick no-nonsense verbal pace is always great; however, in this particular review, the big difference in the new model is the U between the E and the V, and you practically blend it to almost indistinguishable verbally, as in "the regular Bolt and the Bolt EV." Confusing! It should be emphasized "Bolt ee-YOU-vee." Big loud "YOU" for emphasis. But otherwise an awesome review!

Yet another great preview/review by the most informative car review specialist anywhere. Kudos to Alex, what I’m anxious for is a review of the VW ID.4, with tax credit it looks like the best looking EV with the most value. But I’m waiting for the Alex verdict, meanwhile my ID.4 AWD order is on the books.

I'm seriously shopping around with the new crop of small SUV EV's. The VW is slick looking and at a great price with the federal tax credit, but many have already complained that is very underpowered. I'm not an aggressive driver (I drive a Prius!), but I'm curious what the ID4 will cost with an upgraded engine. Plus that white steering wheel looks cool, but I can imagine that it will look disgusting within 6 months of driving. For that 40k MSRP, the VW will have lots of competition from the upcoming Ariya and for another 5k bump, the Ioniq 5. All will have the federal tax credit that's not available on the Bolt and Tesla 3/Y.

@@mls01981 my AWD ID.4 Pro S with the Gradient package is almost at 50K but the dual motor turns out an additional 100 HP and since I’ll be towing a motorcycle trailer I need the additional power and (hopefully) more range. There’s bound to be some initial quirks in the 1st edition so delivery in the fall is prudent. When Alex gives us his opinion then I’ll decide on staying with the VW or trying to find the RAV4 Prime. If all else fails I’ll go with the Model Y.

Thanks for the info and all your thoughts on competitors. You make so many great points which lead to questions... particularly, will there be a tax incentive on this EUV? Depending on if there is a tax incentive, is this the best bank for your buck? Can a better, more expensive EV, be purchased for around the same price with a tax incentive? If there is no tax break on this EUV, overall, which EV with a tax incentive is the best deal for about the same price (34k)?

Since the bolt msrp is sooo much cheaper than the competition I think it is a good choice for an Uber driver. If you do 200 miles a day you will save up to $300 a week vs an equivalent ice vehicle. With gm giving you the in home level 2 charger I believe it to be a steal at the current price and the only choice in North America. If I had a choice, and could buy one, the BYD yuan (atto 3) would be my choice. All BYD’S have the safer blade battery. The LFP battery that can be charged from 0 to 100% every day. A 500,000 km warranty that the battery will not degrade below 50%. All BYD’S also have a heat pump.

Living in Canada, I'll take front wheel driver over rear wheel drive any day and I drove a RWD BMW in Ontario for 18 years. This is an ok move by GM here, IMO. Many EVs are coming out with RWD or AWD (at a premium.) The bigger issue I see with the Bolt is its price is getting close other appealing options at least at the MSRPs we see in Canada. I'm also concerned about GMs reliability, the older Bolts already have serious battery issues.

I really don't get this thing vs the regular Bolt. All you really get is 3 inches more rear leg room. Comparing the numbers you actually get less total passenger volume and slightly less cargo volume. Plus it's a heavier vehicle so the range and 0-60 aren't quite as good. I would never consider a GM car before but this has me interested and props to Chevy for dropping the price for the 2023 models.

You need to add a comment to GM and consumers on the brake lights low in the bumper. Most normal and especially high vehicles will be focused on the upper big lights and not see the small strip light in the bumper for brake lights. Mini Clubman had that same issue, lots of complaints, they now have them in the larger higher lights.

Heat pump is essential in New England. Kia provides it as part of a Winter package for about $1100. I would seriously consider either Bolt if that were available but not without it. A friend has a 2017 Bolt and his 20s F winter range drops to 130 miles in part due to electric heat loads. The Kia Niro has tested out at 180 miles in 20s F. That’s a huge difference for me as my business covers a large area.
