@@cocokai9661 Do you think she was a sociopath too? I don't know, she seemed to have compassion for people...representing lower income immigrants, for example. Tony had a deep compassion for animals and babies. Grown human beings? Not so much... LIVIA??? She was in a league of her own. YIKES!

@@ZPD-doo-DAHI think they were all sociopaths. Sociopathy/psychopathy are often the result of underdeveloped brain. That is usually inherited. Just like bi-polar and schizophrenia running in families, so does sociopathy/psychopathy. Sociopaths will often 'perform' for the audience. It's not uncommon to find them volunteering at charitable causes. They don't do it for compassion they do it to be admired. Sociopaths are all about being admired and praised.

@@cocokai9661 Great point! But they're half Carmela. Wouldn't there be some hope for the kids to be normal? I think Carmela was a "who-ah" for material possessions, but I didn't see her as a sociopath. Like her mom, they were both into status and "Keeping up with the Jones". Couldn't that be just be an American-thing? Sadly.

AJ progressed and became different when he started working at the studios. He may have been a lackluster student and was selfish at times but that alleviated towards the end. About that time Meadow's innocence was pretty much gone because she was on her way to defend criminals.

This. AJ was very disturbed by the beating he saw (the sort of thing Tony would've paid no mind to), whereas had Meadow been there she would've made excuses about "The Poverty of the Mezzogiorno", just like she did with Flynn.

He might have been a spoiled brat, but AJ was the only one in that family who was aware of how messed up his family culture was under the surface, due to the shadow of "This thing of ours" hanging over it. He just wasn't intelligent or motivated enough to actually get out of it, when his own parents weren't sabotaging his rare efforts to do so, of course (like wanting to join the army).

Now I get it, AJ has affluenza! It's a very common disease that effects kids from privileged suburban families; they grow up with stuff, stuff, and more stuff, and absolutely nothing to do. He feels guilty because he has everything in the world, but never got the chance to accomplish anything on his own. It's terrible what his parents did to him, refusing to cut his money off when he no longer need it.

Tony and Carmella justified Tony's "waste management business" as being for the family, but was it really? The huge house w/swimming pool, media room, luxury cars, best private schools, Ivy League college, designer everything, jaw dropping jewelry, mother/daughter spa days..Was it really what was best for their kids? David Chase said he was the same age as Tony Soprano when he created the show. Maybe Chase noticed a similar pattern of behavior in his own children (or their classmates or friends) resulting from living such an affluent lifestyle? The one thing I couldn't figure out was why Tony bought AJ that brand new yellow "tank" and Meadow that POS car.

@@ZPD-doo-DAH That's just it though, being successful in your family isn't exclusive to being economically successful. Sure having money means you don't have the stresses that being without brings but that doesn't mean you're off the hook for being a good father/husband/role model. I've known heads of family think that just because their kids/grand kids are home and in their room that they are doing a fantastic job parenting, even though they never have a conversation with their little shit spawn because they're locked in their rooms spending every second on their phones or PC's. And then to make them happy they think they have to buy them a new toy instead of spending the fucking day with them. Just like OP mentions.

@@dsandoval9396 Are you describing Trump? Kavanaugh? Just kidding! Not really [ha!]. Both Tony and Carmela convinced themselves that the blood money / lavish lifestyle was for the family, the kids, security...but in truth, it was more about status and comfort. After all, a "Boss" could not live in a "cozy" home like the Bucos or worse yet, like Paulie (clipping coupons and owning second-hand art). From the first episode, Tony expressed dissatisfaction with his job and his life, and Carmela always felt guilty for being a religious hypocrite and living in denial. One of the constant themes throughout the series had to do with reconciling their souls with the choices they made. Despite their wealth, Mikey told Tony, via Christopher, "Three o'clock". [Tick-tock]. The Irish bar on St. Patrick's day, awaits...

No. Their job is to make you evolve at your own pace, not to pry. They can make you see things in perspective so that you can make better choices. They are not there to mess with your head. You do that to yourself, if anything. Going to a psychologist or psychiatrist is just like anything else: If you do it halfway, you get a halfway result.
