Love it when Tony tells Carmela that she's getting defensive and that Melfi hadn't even said anything when most of the time Tony gets defensive over Melfi saying nothing. This show was just sheer perfection. Can't get enough of it.

Tony said a thousand times that this therapy is bullshit and she always insisted to keep going because it was entertaining for her. The all "Tony is a sociopath manipulator that can't be helped" thing is an easy way to justify that she drops him when it's not entertaining no more. She is just as hypocrit as the others.
@stairwaytoheaven8
@stairwaytoheaven8 Жыл бұрын
@@tonisow483 Tony was saying that it was bullshit, not because he was aware that the therapy wasn't helping him redeem himself or that he was even aware of an evil person he was, he was saying it because it wasn't helping him with the panic attacks. The only reason why Tony didn't change is because he never admitted to himself that he was evil. And he has only himself to blame.

Michael Sieger well she’s already aware of it, and there’s not much she can do about it, if she leaves they’ll most likely find her, if she rats out they’ll kill her. She's one of the most selfish characters in TV history. Everything she does is driven by self-interest. Even her putting up with Tony's infidelity for so long, is driven by her pampered lifestyle, which would dry up if she left him (he has hardly any legitimate assets other than the house and the boat, as everything is tied up in cash, so she couldn't even take him for half in a divorce).

I love Edie Falco's acting and the subtle choices she makes. When Tony "reminds" her about him passing out with the gabbagool and his mother and all that and she nods her head and agrees, but then she kind of looks up as if she is trying to remember, but clearly he never did tell her. I love this show, a show that motivates the audience to figure some shit out too.

Great subtle writing. It's as if he can't say "girl" or "woman", or even "broad" or "goomad" in front of Carmela because he's so used to hiding it. Even when it's out in the open that he cheats all the time, he still can't bring himself to say the words. People often do this when they're lying or guilty. "Did you do your homework?" "Forgot." Not "***I**** forgot", because including the "I" speaks the guilt into the world.

They’re both terrible people. Carmela is just as bad as Tony. For Tony, we get a sense of protagonism since the story is told from his perspective. But objectively, he does horrible things. She is completely on board with all of it and doesn’t care about who she hurts, so long as she benefits from it and can convince herself it’s not in her control or it was justified. If this sounds familiar, it’s because its exactly what Tony does. Carmela doesn’t mention his crimes when she accuses him of guilt because she doesn’t really have a problem with that. The only thing she is angered by is his infidelity which just shows her rampant narcissism. No perspective of or concern for anything but herself. Again, this is a classic Tony move. The reason people hate Carmela instead of Tony however is that she is utterly lazy and has few redeeming qualities. Tony has traits like charisma, intelligence and a semblance of a moral compass (however flawed it is).

@@ExternusArmyI don’t agree you can really say Carmela is as ‘bad’ as someone who actually murders people and lies about it. But she’s clearly been an enabler out of self-preservation for her own lifestyle, so I agree she doesn’t have the high ground either.

@@VideoAmericanStyle She is just as bad as him, if not worse. She asks him gleefully about how much money he made, knowing full well that someone probably could’ve been murdered for it. She only gets upset at him when he refuses to say how much it was. She may not be murdering, but she knows it’s happening and is completely fine with it. The reason she doesn’t do it herself is probably something like laziness and a huge ego, not because she feels it’s wrong. She is a greedy, self-serving person just like Tony with the same outlook online except she knows she doesn’t have to get it herself bc she can just marry someone to do it for her.

@@ExternusArmy she’s definitely greedy and selfish and hypocritical, but it’s preposterous to consider her equal in stature to a cold-blooded serial murderer, philanderer and abuser. Come on, you can’t honestly believe what you’re writing. Nearly everyone in the show is despicable in their own way, but Tony always stands out as the moral nadir because of his constant deception.

@@VideoAmericanStyle I think being too lazy to murder doesn’t make you better than a murderer, especially if you’re just banging the murderer so he can do it for you. Let me ask you a hypothetical, what if Tony murdered the person and then she picked the pocket of the dead body herself? Doesn’t that seem so much worse? But it’s exactly what she’s doing. She just has the extra personality flaw that Tony doesn’t have which is being too lazy and incompetent to commit any crimes herself. That isn’t a virtue. That’s ANOTHER flaw on top of the willingness to commit crime and hurt people for personal gain, which is why I say she’s worse.

I see people saying that Melfi was a good shrink but if being honest with the patient is bad, being understanding and patient is worse cause she did nothing for him ... even if it doesn't work, guys like him need the direct approach to let him know that he and his lifestyle are the problem and not something else ... and if being patient or direct don't work that just means that deep down he is lost and doesn't really want to change which means he needs to be left alone to suffer the consequences from what he is really chosen to be ... in plain words if a person isn't deep down ready to change he is uncurable. There is no such thing as a balanced, positive and calm killer.

As for tony he has done a lot of shit that would cause guilt to build up inside. He has killed people, ordered people to be killed, beaten the living shit out of people, etc. WTF do you call that?

This clip should be broadcast nationwide as a public service announcement against psychologists. You see one for years on end, spend thousands of dollars, and all you get is a reflecting board that just bounces your comments back at you and improves nothing.

Therapy is useful for gaining insight, or at least the tools to gather insight, but if it's not accompanied by consistent, gradually escalating outside assignments then it won't do shit other than show you how and why you're fucked up.

I saw a therapist for my anxiety and got some great relaxation techniques. It works if you cooperate and acknowledge your problems. Tony makes no progress because he never does deal with his root causes and Melfi is too scared to try to force him. The only way he'll ever be cured is if he stops being a mob boss and he won't stop. So it's a waste of time

Tony’s ego won’t allow him to admit to two women in the room that he is the one that has a problem and might need to change. I don’t know what he was thinking by bringing Carmela there.
