They’re called the “Maple Leafs” and not “Maple Leaves” because they’re named after the Canadian regiment in World War I, which was known as the “ Maple Leaf Regiment”

Actually it's a grammatical reason for both the team and the regiment. It's a proper name so it's Leafs not leaves.

Speaking of using old and new architecture in Toronto the Hockey Hall of Fame is located in an old bank building connected to a modern office building complex. The bank vault houses trophies and the rings of the Stanley Cup that were removed to make room for the names of most recent champions

Re: Skydome. The reason they didn't name it the Rogers SkyDome was that, after Rogers Communications purchased the Stadium, Ted was willing to name it that. An advisor said to him "People will just refer to it as the SkyDome still" and the name was changed to Rogers Centre.. The funny thing is.. People STILL call it SkyDome regardless..

The Leafs are called the Leafs instead of the Leaves is because it isnt named after the leaf itself but an insignia used by Canadian soldiers during WW1 called the Maple Leaf. So in that context its plural is leafs not leaves.

I love the stadiums of Toronto, great video. One I would like to add is not really a stadium but it has great history which is the baseball field at Christie Pits, which is the home field of the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team of the Intercounty baseball league. The team and league have some interesting history, like the fact that Babe Ruth hit his first pro home run in Toronto. Anyone interested in Baseball history should look it up.

Interesting note about York Lions Stadium. It was built to host the 2015 PAN AM games and prior to conversion to its current state, it used to have temporary seating all the way around with a capacity closer to 11,000 and actually looked quite impressive. Currently for York United FC Games, the far side features rows of premium seating, much like dugout seats from European football stadiums, and converted shipping containers that serve as luxary suites, with TVs, couches, food/drink service. Under the Scoreboard end, there is quite a large bleacher stand used by York United Support groups, and parked behind that is usually several foodtrucks on matchdays as well as several sponsorship activations and youth activities.
@neilwhitaker62842 ай бұрын
it had bleachers all around? IN the late 80s and 90s only on the one side, the South side I believe. Did it still have the running track when the bleachers went all around?

Maple Leaf Gardens remains a hockey shrine, which was why it was so important to keep hockey in the building. The supermarket on the lower levels features hockey-related art and Leafs memorabilia. Centre ice is marked by a dot on the market floor. Rogers Centre is rather sterile and not very user-friendly, but when the Blue Jays play well, the atmosphere is very intimidating. BMO Field sits on the site of the former Exhibition Stadium, home to the Argonauts and Jays. Exhibition was very ugly and uncomfortable. In late May you could freeze your arse off because of the breezes off Lake Ontario.

Every hockey fan always has this explanation holstered: the Leafs aren't the "Leaves" because they took their name from a military symbol. So "Maple Leaf" in this case is a proper noun, hence being pluralised with an "s" rather than "ves." Don't worry, EVERYBODY makes that exact same mistake when they first hear it.

I have either competed or been a spectator in most of these except for the tennis stadium! Varsity stadium used to have a horseshoe shaped stand around three sides of the stadium and held about 22,000 people. Canada used to play a lot of its World Cup qualy matches there. I was there in 1985 when we played Costa Rica and drew 1-1. Later Canada went on to qualify for the WC for the first time! The Budweiser Stage used to be called the Ontario Place Amphitheater and the stage was in the centre of a bowl with bleacher seating nearly all around and the hill behind the bleachers for more sitting area. I saw the Spoons and the Temptations there in the 80s. Sometimes the stage would actually spin around slowly. At its current setup I saw Blur after they released Parklife with Ned's Atomic Dustbin opening. York Lions stadium used to have a track around it with metal bleachers on one side, it hosted many an OfSSAA and Ontario Track and Field Championships there. Ben Johnson and his crew used to train there a lot back in those days. Maple Leaf Gardens was an old barn with troughs for urinals but was a much better atmosphere than the ACC (which they call scotiabank arena or whatever I still call it the ACC). ACC is quite sterile. Cool kids still call the Skydome the Skydome, Rogers is a rip off cable tv and cellphone provider and nobody likes those guys. I left Toronto in 2011 because it had lost a lot of its old character and was no fun any longer, I could really see that around Lamport Stadium. That area was a little gritty when I was younger and now it looks like Liberty Village condo utopia. Like the ACC very sterile and corporate. edit: I saw the Eukanuba Super Dogs at the Coca Cola Coliseum just before the renovation at the Ex (Canadian National Exhibition), it is a beautiful old building, I'm glad they have done a nice job with that one.

As usual, a great video! I grew up near Toronto, so this one was particularly interesting to me. But I'm going to finally allow myself to be unfairly pedantic and say that when you say "with that being said" as you do at the start of many videos, you are using that phrase incorrectly: it doesn't mean "now that I've said that, I'm going to say something else"; it means something more like "however" or "on the other hand", to introduce a contradictory phrase. Sorry, I know most people don't care at all about that, it's just like nails on a chalkboard to me.

BMO Field is an embarrassment of a stadium….looks like they hired IKEA to build the thing. The fact they don’t even have seats on the north end is just hilariously sad. I have no clue why they decided to build such a small south stand and then erect the roof way high up - that makes no sense at all. Only the East stand they built makes sense, the west stand looks weird with the boxes and the roof. And whoever came up with the colour concept of having blue seats mixed it with red seats needs to be fired. Nothing about that stadium is aesthetically pleasing. The only upside is the actually PITCH itself looks world class….

it is really pathetic for a city this size to have such lame stadiums. Unfortunately Canadians just do not support sports teams like they do in the US. Even college teams have stadiums that hold 100,000, while Canadian college teams get family members and school classmates only. Having a soccer world cup here will be embarrassing.
