Randolph Scott (1898-1987) was a Western movie hero in the 1930's-50's. The Durango Kid (Charles Starrett, 1903-1986) was a Western vigilante of the 1940's. Johnny "Mack" Brown (1904-1974) starred in 1930's-40's serials. Tex Ritter (1905-1974) was a country music singer and actor popular from the 1930's-50's. Allan "Rocky" Lane (1909-1973) was in many 1930's-40's Westerns, and the voice of Mister Ed. "Lash" LaRue (1917-1996) was a cowboy hero of the 1940's, and taught Harrison Ford how to use a bullwhip. Tim Holt (1919-1973) was in many 1940's Westerns. Gene Autry (1907-1998) was a singing cowboy and TV star, remembered for Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer and other Christmas songs. Smiley Burnette (1911-1967) was a comedic actor and sidekick to Gene Autry and others in movies and TV. While many of these names are already fading into history along with their black-and-white films, it is a pleasure to hear them remembered by The Statler Brothers.

How very true, the TRUTH in the lyrics!!! I was born in 1969, but I’m still young enough to appreciate a good movie 🍿 that doesn’t revolves around the “unadorned female in her newborn-natural state. A friend of mine (1968-2022) who passed away in December’22… One of his “catch lines” in life was: “Is there any nudity in this movie???” Another friend, still very much alive (for the time being anyway!!!)… Being a 53-yr old w/ the [im]maturity of a 17-yr old, stills replies: “Oh, MAN!!!” whenever HE sees the “unadorned female figure” on the screen (which is probably WHY he’s NEVER had a GF, much less ever been laid…🙄!!!).

Wow! Was Randolph Scott ever handsome!!! My maiden aunt went to school in Charlotte with one of Randolph's sisters, with whom my mother and I used to walk and talk with on our ambulations around our common neighborhood. I remember Randolph's mother when she used to wait for the street car to come down E. Morehead Street near her lavish home on Dilworth Road. I believe that Mrs. Scott was a widow by then. In those days ladies of note who were built with rather rotund waists sometimes didn't wear a bra as an undergarment. (At least to me--a small child--that's the way she appeared to me.) Like Mrs. Scott, the dowager lady, she and others of wealthy circumstances she seemed just let her voluptuous breasts hang down over her waist-line. Her skirts back then were about 2 or 3 inches above her ankles. Not the outgoing friendly type as were her children, Mrs. Scott's foyer had floor-to-ceiling columns. The living room was set to the right of the entrance hall, and the dining room was to the left. I never went upstairs in the home, but it was stately and set among mansions--one of which took up an entire city block. The latter home was occupied by the owner of the enormous Southern chain of S&W (Sherrill & Williams) Cafeterias. My mother who taught Sunday School at First Methodist Church for 67 years taught the Sherrill son in her third-grade Sunday School class as well as many of Charlotte's later leading citizens. Mother was so well-loved and valued at First Methodist that after she had taught there for 60 years, the church celebrated a "We Love Trudy Day". An enormous blue banner declaring in large bold letters reading "We Love Trudy Day" was hung above the benches behind the altar. Leading citizens who had been in her class rose one at a time and paid tribute to Mother and reminisced about what they had learned in her Sunday School Classes. All of Charlotte loved and admired Randolph Scott, the actor. He and a male friend left Charlotte and went to Hollywood together to seek their fortune in movies. Randolph's friend soon returned home to Charlotte, but Randolph stayed on making friends quite easily with actors who became his life-long friends. He is buried in the very same cemetary in which my maternal grandparents, my parents, an aunt, and a great-uncle are buried. An interesting sideline is that there was a "potters field" in that cemetary set to one side. That is where the indigent were buried. One year when I was small the Ringling Brothers-Barnum and Bailey Circus came to town. One of their elephants died, and that great animal was buried in the very same Elmwood Cemetary on E. 5th Street!

The delicious irony about this song is that Randolph Scott and Cary Grant were madly in love with each other and shared a love nest for decades. Of course I don't care one bit what people do in their private lives, but before you hold someone up as a paragon of conservative family values, you might want to do some due diligence first :-)
@vioscios10 жыл бұрын
Healthy skepticism should be consistently applied and to that end you might want to do some due diligence on that claim yourself. It's an circumstantial rumor, that was directly challenged by Scott's son in his book with this same title. Also, the time frame was 10 years, not decades. Now if they were lovers that's great for them, but a rumor is hardly something to chide others about for not knowing.
@vioscios10 жыл бұрын
Treeleaper1 Right, it's just a rumor based on circumstantial evidence, as I point out.
