Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of Goldberg in WCW
During the Monday Night TV ratings struggle between the WWE and WCW during the 90s, it would be fair to say that the WWF was the king of creating new and upcoming wrestling talent. New competitors were able to come into the company, get placed into the midcard and have the oppurtunity to work their way into the main event.
WCW, on the other hand, had difficulty in this area. Due to creative control contracts, a swelling heel faction that had a lot of political stroke, and the fact that a good chunk of the roster was made up of older WWF superstars, becoming a break out talent in Ted Turner's organization in the mid to late 90s was seemingly impossible. One man who was an exception to the rule was Bill Goldberg.
In this mini documentary from Wrestling Bios, we try to forget the match Goldberg recently had with The Undertaker at Super Showdown and instead, we look at Goldberg during his most popular years, so we are looking at The Story of Goldberg in WCW.
We look at his career before wrestling as a pro footballer, his introduction to wrestling from Sting and Lex Luger, his training in the WCW Power Plant, the WCW debut of Goldberg, the infamous Goldberg undefeated streak in WCW, his odd match against William Regal (then known as Lord Steven Regal), Hulk Hogan vs Goldberg on Nitro from the Toronto Sky Dome where Goldberg captured the WCW championship, Goldberg losing the title and the streak to Kevin Nash, his feud with Bret Hart and much more.

I met Goldberg back in 2000 during a UK tour. He was doing signings with Norman Smiley. He was very chilled and cool answering questions to fans and taking photos.

That was a good match , but that Goldberg vs DDP match was OUTSTANDING! At that time you just knew no matter who Goldberg was wrestling, Bill was gonna win. But at that time DDP was WAY OVER and it was the first time I remember thinking , WOW Goldberg might lose this one! The told a great story with the match , it was SO close too. I'd suggest watching it now but I'm sure that it wont have the same feel as it did during the Unbeatable Goldberg run. At one point near the end DDP hits a diamond cutter outta left field and I swore he had him beat! Jumped outta my chair! Great match!

It's funny cause I ALWAYS hear about how the DDP match at Halloween Havoc was cut off on PPV, but as a Cablevision subscriber in the New Jersey/New York USA area, they must have been one of the few providers that let the event air to it's conclusion, as I not only distinctly remember watching the whole match, but even recorded it for one of my friends whose parents wouldn't allow him to order a ton of PPVs and the ones he would order we're wwf ones. Funny, guess it was lucky, or Cablevision is just awesome that way, I DO remember it being long as hell...

Goldberg was great to watch, but at times, it got really old. As much as I enjoyed seeing his pure power(like Brock Lesner), the sheer power was amazing, it kind of got stale after awhile. Especially seeing how limited his wrestling style was. Now I will be honest, I've never been a fan of any wrestler being pushed with Godlike Powers, its something I just don't think is entertaining

Uploaded two days after his match with The Undertaker. Awesome! Goldberg is my third favorite WCW wrestler and Undertaker is my third favorite wrestler of all time but that match they would've been better back in the early 2000s. Instead their match was meh. I want to believe Goldberg was their answer to WWF's "Stone Cold" Steve Austin but lost a lot of hype after his 1998 Starrcade lost to Kevin Nash. In retrospect, his streak, badass entrance, being booked to squash his opponents and made to look nearly invulnerable are what got him over.

Oh Goldberg, not a great wrestler, matches were so short but it helped his character. Plus he had some decent matches in WWE....well not the last one, God that was sad. Infact all the way up until after his win against Hogan 90% the fans loved him. After that win nothing new was coming from wcw for a goldberg storyline. Thats when the fans started to turn against him and want to see something new from him. I remember it vividly (as a kid). Thats when i fell in love with pro-wrestling for the first time.

@@julioernestomoretacastillo2366 well that's just not even close to reality. Golberg wasn't even in the middle of his streak the last time WCW had beaten WWF in Monday night ratings. WCW pay per views didn't come close to WWF pay per view buys either, so I don't know how you call him the biggest draw. Hogan was still the #1 guy in WCW the entire time they pushed Goldberg's ridiculous 'streak.' NWO was the draw in WCW, and as it dwindled, so did the ratings, all the while the streak was going strong as ratings dropped/ So the facts are that Golberg was not a bigger draw than Undertaker or HBK, and that's an insult to every wrestling fan ever. Those guys had 25 year careers and Goldberg had a two year nonsensical push followed by straight trash matches once they let him fend for himself. He was lucky to get picked up by the WWF and he never had the skill or the mic work to be there. He was a complete facade and never had any business sniffing a match with Austin.

So the PPV crowd didn’t get to see DDP/Goldberg? Good thing I was at MGM for this event so saw it live and in person! Met quite a few wrestlers after the PPV too. Greatest 3 year stretch of WCW for me.

Sting and Luger? Ive always heard from Goldberg in interviews that it was DDP that got him into wrestling.

Nope. I heard him say it was mostly Sting and Luger. But DDP also encouraged him. They both trained at the Power Plant.

Russo wasn't 100% responsible for the nonsense that happened in WCW's dying days. That'll be his seniors. Russo wanted to map out a slow burn storyline (like he did for Survivor Series '98) but was told he had to fix things "now" when he arrived there. Despite being put in an impossible position, he did manage to increase WCW's ratings every week he was on creative, if you look at the stats. Also in 25 years of Raw episodes, viewing figures were at their all time peak when Russo/Ferrara were running the creative. As Steve Austin said on Russo's podcast, Russo was "a huge part of the attitude era".

Losing to kevin Nash by cattle prod....thats when its starting going down hill👎👎 Rather than a great finish..you angered not only fans but a ton of jewish businesses, sport athletes, critics, bookers and people that were told "you have to see this guy wrestle"...dead. nice work.

I watched religiously back when Goldberg made his appearance and I had a feeling he was gonna be a star. He had no laurels to rest on like alot of the WCW ''stars'' back then, and I felt that in real life he'd demolish just about anyone in that company. I was getting sick of dudes in their 40s and 50s beat up on young studs( I mean I can only suspend reality to a certain level) and it was nice to see Goldberg run right through them. I think at some point it becomes very important for a star who's gonna last for a while to be able to cut good promos but there was so much darn talking back then that it was nice to see someone let their actions do all the talking. Bischoff handled Goldberg well IMO.

Goldberg provided the necessary fuel to keep the WCW machine running during those years of the Monday night wars with WWE. The shenanigans like NWO and other characters helped but lets face it, many people tuned in just to see if Goldberg's streak would continue or end.

Goldberg's Regal match showed him clearly not being able to grapple and constantly going back to an armlock over and over. And given that he literally ended Bret's career by kicking him in the face, he has a lot of gall to complain about Regal's snug kicks to the back.
