April 1, 2016 marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of Apple. A lot has changed at the company over the years, including the person running the show. In 2011, Steve Jobs named Tim Cook as Apple’s new CEO. Cook has led the company to better financial performance than it had ever achieved before. Bloomberg Businessweek's Sam Grobart explains Apple’s history under Cook's leadership and the mark he is leaving on the company and world.

Tim Cook is a highly competent executive who knows how to run a company. Steve Jobs was a visionary who injected magic into the company and made it more than a mere corporation. Both were perfect choices for the company in its respective stages.

I don't think cook's problem is timing, i think his issue is product intuition, design, and a fundamental and philosophical sense of consumer desire. Jobs had it and it was the reason he revolutionized the smart phone business at a time when blackberry was still king. revolutionized animation at a time when Dinsey was king, revolutionized PC's at a time when IBM was king. iPod's at a time when Sony was king.
@AmanRathore6297
@AmanRathore6297 7 жыл бұрын
You basically proved why Tim's issue is time and not the ability to innovate. It's pretty clear in the video and logically that Steve Jobs did the right things at the right time. Unsuccessful people call this timing luck, it's not luck, it's the reason why successful people are successful. They're successful because they know what to do and when to do it. Tim Cook has been innovating on a small scale but in numbers, so he might just make a big change in the future

Null I'm thoroughly impressed by Apples under Tim Cook. It is not just about delivering the right product at the right time. It is about delivering the right product, better than anyone else in the market, while also making positive impact to the society. Examples, Apple Energy, Liam Robot and ARKit. On the other hand I'm actually not that impressed with what Google has been doing. Android was a Me-Too product, so was Google Cloud.
@WouterStudioHD

Aman Rathore , it's not luck, at that period of time technology was about to break through and there really weren't many companies that were even trying very hard to be like Apple. Tim Cook has innovatived far more then people realise, who made the Apple Pencil? The Apple Watch?

Apple held back on 3G and 4G for battery life concerns (3G eats up battery a lot quicker than 2G and that LTE eats up significantly more battery life than 3G) which is why the earliest 3G and LTE phone had garbage battery life. If they wait on 5G it’ll be for the same reasoning.
@eIucidate
@eIucidate 7 жыл бұрын
JohnJacob JinglehimerSchmidt It makes a convenient excuse, certainly. MonkeyMan Battery life issues would be easily addressed if the manufacturers weren't so adamant on making phones thinner and thinner. That's not an excuse for stagnation, but certainly a pragmatic temporary solution. But obviously it won't be happening unless all manufacturers agree to do the same.
@777DrFeelgood777
@777DrFeelgood777 7 жыл бұрын
elucidate it’s hardly an excuse, go back and look at the contemporaries of those iPhones that adopted 3G and LTE early- it isn’t pretty. At this point we can’t go back to thicker phones either since our phones are so much bigger (we’ve gone from 3.5"-4” to 5"-5.5”)- the decreased thickness is in part a response to counterbalance the weight and size of bigger phones.

Jobs has left a legacy behind him and in spite of what the video says about Tim asking himself what Jobs might have done in difficult decisions, he's somehow subconsciously thinking about it in terms of legacy, values, etc. There's a guide, a bright star that points them in the right direction in a sense and guides everyone's decisions at Apple. This is something the Jobs left for them.

Tim Cook is like a personal trainer, he help Apple to cut fat, to lighter itself, he makes Apple move faster, and Jobs put the ipod in Apple pocket so Apple can enjoy some fun while excersise. The best way to put it is, Steve jobs was "better" at making the best, most perfect, and most reliable products. Tim Cook is a "better" business man and knows how to make big money So essentially, if you want your company to make innovated products and make significant technological leaps, hire Steve. If you want someone who can grow your company's net worth as quickly and efficiently as possible, hire Tim Cook.

To be fair, Cook took over a company with the momentum of a rocket mid-flight. All that money and resources, and you would imagine Apple would have some of the top research labs in the world, teams of scientists, designers, engineers and researchers on the payroll to just let them come up with cool stuff they could brand and market. Instead, their insular (arrogant) focus on the iPhone and thinness as the singular litmus test for aesthetics has brought their products' structural integrity, expandability and overall user friendliness into question. Tim's "operational excellence" might be what's responsible for entire product lines dying on the vine with no word from Cupertino (Thunderbolt Display, Airport, Time Capsule, Mac Mini, Mac Pro etc). Steve Jobs was a creative genius and Apple's alleged deep bench doesn't come even close to replacing his ideas and obsession with design. Somebody, if not Tim Cook, needs to restore the focus on delivering the BEST products and break this painfully incremental update cycle.

I think Tim is doing a great job. He’s most likely inundated with many product ideas from within, but great CEO’s do well to stick to what’s working and maintaining the core of an Organisation. The Apple Ecosystem right now has never been better and he must surely have options galore as to where he can go with it... Few products make for a better focus in my view.

I really think the Apple Watch was/is the next big thing. It's amazing from what I can tell. And it was just done so well. That watch is definitely the future. And Siri, TouchID, 3D/Force Touch, HealthKit and Apple Pencil etc. is all very impressive. They're really innovative still.

Why do people keep saying Tim Cook has a better record with Apple in terms of revenue than Steve Jobs. Yeah, so? Steve Ballmer also did the same with Microsoft. It's called path dependence - that means the ground work was laid for them to benefit.

Two points I want to make out: 1) Saying that the time is just not suitable for coming up with new innovative products as before is a statement for LOSERS, as we all continuously witness the innovation from new startups and other major technology firms. 2) Saying that sales are better because of an intelligent marketing strategy is not the complete truth, because IT business is a pipeline: what you do today will continue to sell pretty well in the next 10 years (the normal distribution). Now if you do not have new ideas and innovative products in the pipe, you will definitely drastically loose market share after that!

Tim Cook is great, but he could be better. His strengths are embracing certain "right moves" that make the company better in other directions than it would otherwise be if Steve's stubborness was still around. Although I think ultimately Apple is best in Steve's hands comparitively so far, Tim has definitely made some better advancements to Apple and to their OS in particular that I feel maybe Steve wouldn't be so quick on. He was wonderful as a 2nd in command to Steve Jobs and as someone to combine talents with Steve to sort of complete some of his faults or bounce ideas off of, but TIm could be and has the ability to be better, and it's not too late. Tim has been able to keep Apple afloat more or less, but not skyrocket yet or even make some of the best decisions. I think Steve too would have gotten rid of the headphone jack, but there are certain other decisions that I feel would have been more refined, and that is due to Steve's stricter nature. I appreciate Tim's ability to lead with kindness, and there is definitely more than one way to accomplish the same things Steve would, but I think Tim needs to do some soul-searching on where Apple has been and its whole journey, and get more deep down to the core and fiber of what Apple is in order to have a stronger road-map, similar to how Steve got super-focused when he first returned to the company in the 90s and never lost sight.

Tim Cook is fantastic. Apple Watch series 2 = 10/10 Ear Pods = 8/10 needs better speakers or a lower price. Still amazing though. MacBooks, MacBook Pro's and iMacs are all fantastic machines = 8/10. They still need to be a lower price and have better specs compared to some similar Microsoft laptops. There is also the ports issue. iPhone 7 Plus = 9/10. Love this phone. It could have some feature like super fast charging and less bezels. I think wireless charging is a fad because it's slower and is merely for show. Apple also bringing Google's voice to the iPhone is a step in the right direction. I like Siri but Google is so far ahead when it comes to voice, maps and other things. The one thing about Apple is every device works flawlessly. Saying that I did hear about some hiccups on the 2016 MacBook Pro which needs ironing out. All the devices I own from Apple work like a dream. You can see why it's so good to stay with Apple.

I miss the root of the apple company when they had the best devices for pros and they had them first. Now they are behind and more focused on the phone & watch, leaving behind what people know them for before the phone. Any one could walk in to a publication and see all mac pros knowing they had the best of the best at that time. Look at thunderbolt they had it first now v3 they dont, they have not up dated Thunderbolt Display in years and the imac you cant use as a display for the new so called mac pro that makes no sense. I would buy mac pro and the 5k imac just for the display. My point is they left behind what most from the past know them for, to now people know them for phones ipads now the watch. I do give them credit for the new mac pro but feel its not keep up with the times like they use to be on top. Cant say steve would have keep up with this, just feel him and his team lost that side of the company. Just hope Tim can bring that back and keep up with that side of things.

Two things that you can do: 1) Invent new ground-breaking products and risk your reputation for conquering the market or 2) Make the existing products a bit better each year- without taking on too much risk on your back. I think Steve Jobs was mostly 1) and Tim Cook is mostly 2). That's not a bad thing, but given that Apple was prized for being a 1) type of a company- while everyone else in the tech was more of a 2) company, they just joined the club. Unless they put an innovator up at the top to turn things around, Apple will slowly transform into Microsoft.
