8:12 so to give a bit more context on Toro and Kuro (because the english internet doesn't really have much info on these two): they're not just "sony of japan mascots", but also prominent characters in sony's "Doko Demo Issho" series of games (the first one released in 1999 for the PS1 and famously required the also japan-only Pocketstation addon to work); its kinda hard to describe their gameplay but imagine a sort of tamagotchi pet raising game except you can also teach your pet vocabulary words, and it'll ask questions about things in the world (e.g. "are watermelons scary? Y/N?") toro's whole schtick is that he wants to behave just like a human, whereas kuro is a rude troublemaker that loves things like gambling and drinking; they're also *avid* gamers in-universe and play everything from Street Fighter and Tekken to Crash and Metal Gear, hence why they have fighting capabilities (see PS all stars battle royale as a prime example; its the reason they know who Heihachi is and what he's 'supposed' to look like at that point in time)

Hey JM, about the question of "Why Bad Boxart Megaman?" I believe I recall the answer. This may be apocryphal, as it's a story I remember hearing but don't remember the sources on, but bad megaman was chosen for SfxT is that in the years between between '09 and the games release of '12 Capcom internally greenlit some 3-5 DIFFERENT Megaman projects many of which were lined up to be coming out around 2012 including a new mainline title and multiple spinoff games like the Zero games as part of a big Megaman revival push and amongst them they figured it was okay to throw some levity around with the Megaman being included in SFxT. Unfortunately, as these titles were being developed all of them ran into the rocky shores of game development and every single one ended up being cancelled EXCEPT for Bad Boxart Megaman which then ended up feeling like a bit of a thumb in the eye to Megaman fans around the world.
@GGCamrenАй бұрын
Yep. that's an accurate summation of the events. Megaman was getting a big push: Maverick Hunter, Megaman Legends 3, and Megaman Universe, and this was a gag but all the games were cancelled so a gag became an "insult".
@Oscar97oАй бұрын
Honestly, even at the time I just thought it was really funny. Regular Megaman would just feel out of place alongside characters with normal proportions. Just like the Sony cats.

@EinDoseАй бұрын
I've also heard that Inafune's response when they asked him to include Mega Man was 'we've already seen Mega Man in fighting games, show me something new'. Which was actually sorta valid; by the time of SFxT the original Mega Man, .EXE, Volnutt from Legends, and Zero in both his X and Zero-series incarnations were already in fighting games. 'Give me something new' was fair, and Bad Box Art Mega Man is DEFINITELY a new angle.

I’m sure someone else in the comments probably mentioned it, but the idea with Bad Box Art Mega Man was that at the time, with games like Maverick Hunter, Mega Man Universe, and Mega Man Legends 3 on the horizon, the devs thought Mega Man had a bright enough future that they could afford to make a tongue in cheek joke with him. And this is the part where you remember that in the period of time since MM10’s release in 2010, there has only been one original, non-mobile release in the series The joke aged poorly before the game even released

Some quite weird ones: Bobby Ologun in the PS2 version of Power Instinct Matrimelee. The first game already had some guests from Rage of the Dragons, but they were replaced in the PS2 version with additional PI2 characters plus Bobby. Bobby was a Japanese-Nigerian TV personality, so kind of a similar situation to Norimaro. And obviously Soul Calibur 4, on top of Darth Vader, Yoda and Promote Our New Game Guy, there's also the random original characters designed by various manga artists. SC2, SC5 and SC6 too, but at least some effort was made there to make the characters feel like they belong. And a classic example with Gon in Tekken 3, who both broke the game and made it impossible to reissue properly. A playable Spartan from Halo appeared in Dead or Alive 4, and Samus Aran, while not playable, was in Dead or Alive Dimensions.
