“Everything we do is to gain pleasure” Freud would have agreed with this initially but then later on he talked about how we sometimes can override the “pleasure principle” through what he called Repetition Compulsion whereby we are compelled to repeat patterns that are not necessarily pleasurable and he said that this was particularly true if people have experienced trauma
@mikekatzman9772

Viewing everything you do as being exclusively attempts to gain pleasure is not consistent with a life of meaning, wisdom and true fulfillment. Everyone has the desire to gain pleasure, however many of the things people do to gain meaning, wisdom and fulfillment are not at all pleasant, pleasurable or comfortable. Indeed it is often the precise opposite. I believe this to be self evident to any person who has ever sought meaning wisdoms or fulfilment. Happiness, pleasure and comfort play a role and are not bad, but if exclude things that appear at odds with immediate happiness pleasure or comfort you are limiting your experience an awful lot

Pleasure is the hedonic view. Fulfilment is the hedaimonic view. Pleasure: Buying something, watching a nice movie, spending time with friends, going to a spa, sex, but also drugs and addictions. Fulfilment: Following your path, living in line with your values, getting great at things, creating something.

"Everything we do in life is to gain pleasure, if anyone disagrees I'ld be happy to have a debate session down in the comments"... Well, the very book you're summarizing presents (rather strongly) an argument against that: "Pleasure is great, but it’s a horrible value to prioritize your life around. Ask any drug addict how his pursuit of pleasure turned out. Ask an adulterer who shattered her family and lost her children whether pleasure ultimately made her happy. Ask a man who almost ate himself to death how pleasure helped him solve his problems. Pleasure is a false god. Research shows that people who focus their energy on superficial pleasures end up more anxious, more emotionally unstable, and more depressed. Pleasure is the most superficial form of life satisfaction and therefore the easiest to obtain and the easiest to lose. And yet, pleasure is what’s marketed to us, twenty-four/seven. It’s what we fixate on. It’s what we use to numb and distract ourselves. But pleasure, while necessary in life (in certain doses), isn’t, by itself, sufficient. Pleasure is not the cause of happiness; rather, it is the effect. If you get the other stuff right (the other values and metrics), then pleasure will naturally occur as a by-product."

@maxmoon2356

Not everything we do is to gain pleasure but almost all our life, we work to reach certain future that would make us happy. And since pleasure is an effect of happiness, then we don’t do everything to gain pleasure. We sometimes want do things that make other people feel a certain way, and that takes effort from you. I don’t believe that someone would intend to do things without a benefit. And that benefit is to make you feel happy for what you just did. If you are religious and were taught that doing things and stopping thing would determine whether you go to heaven or hell. So you might stop things that would make you happy, but the ultimate goal of going to heaven supersedes all other choices, and the idea of heaven would make people happy to be there for the rest of the afterlife(if you believe so). So everything we do is to gain happiness. Not pleasure. But pleasure might be one of the reasons we seek happiness.

i guess he meant satisfaction. and pleasure from consumption is not the only kind of pleasure. in fact, that one is the one that has the most diminishing returns. pleasure from production, in other words work that you truly enjoy, or something like playing sports etc, is a sustainable source of pleasure

life is not about happiness its about experiences... things that made you happy before fades away from your memory down the road but memories that stay with you forever are times you been in some crazy shit... (during the moment you was scared, after you reflect upon it as that was awesome) for example I was surfing out on a huge day at pipeline, I took off on a wave and eat shit, held under water for 30 seconds while getting tossed under water, i ended up getting scars on my legs which i still have to this day. I was scared shitless and wished i never went out. Now that i reflect upon in it, i dont have a single regret and truly believe im a fucking madman What is something yall can never forget?

I actually had a funny story to share. I was trying to explain to my daughter how this method really of thinking really helps me, but I felt like a comedian trying to explain this method of thinking to her and tried not to swear saying words like "poo and even trying not to use the word shit." "We have to let our poo run sometimes" I told her. She said "like the refrigerator is running" "is this a joke" she said. and I kept trying to explain without saying bad words. But I ended in saying "you'll understand when your older. I love this book and how it helps to not make a big deal about everything and focusing on higher priorities. But it's so funny hearing people try to repeat out loud what it means without swearing. "if my poo can run, yours can too." Because we all got shit to do. Excuse my language. But don't try explaining it to kids under 10. Lol 😂😂

Great video! Quick question “the enjoyment you’ll get from pursuing more experiences will be overpowered by the enjoyment you’ll get from the depth of experiencing a few things to the fullest” I didn't really understand, going into tons of dates and traveling many countries is pursuing more experiences, but I would enjoy more the life of community and settle down?

This is your first world problem. It's not that you work more for money to buy pleasure things, in my case and my country, most people don't have choices. We work more for food to put on our table, for our family to have something to eat and somewhere to shelter ourselves from the harsh environment. You can only say you don't give a f if you aren't born into poverty or in a corrupted country. It's not just food and shelter that we worry about. We also have to work extremely hard to provide for our family, and the money to cover our doctor fee because we live in a polluted city.

About "Everything we do is to gain pleasure." Um, no. Say, my wife whom I am about to divorce asks me to go to the store to buy tampons, which I have never done before. On the way, I get to a traffic light where there are no other cars at all and I have a red light. I stop while thinking about the pile of work I need to get done by the end of the day that I am not doing because I am on an errand for someone I no longer love while stopped from doing what I need to do by a light that doesn't see that there is no reason to stop me. What pleasure am I getting in stopping?

I want to have pleasure debate. Obviously there’s also pain that you move away from. However from an existentialist point of view, people do things that have purpose and will move toward pain and through suffering if it has meaning. Check Frankl and Nietzsche. A man who has a why can bear almost any how. We move toward suffering if it’s for a purpose.

tl;dr - understand that Pareto principle and how to prioritize (don't give a F* about the low importance/low priority things). The Pareto principle states that for many outcomes roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of the causes (the “vital few”). Another name for this principle is the 80/20 rule.

The reason why this hits me so hard is because I always blame others at my faults. Whether it caused by people or calamities, I always feels like the victim in this whole life. Which in fact it isn't. It just life works that way, and me having to begin improving at something has nothing to do with it.
