The thing about mask off Belos is that he's still being manipulative and honestly kinda emotionally abusive to Hunter, that doesn't change. It's not supposed to be overtly intimidating because in that scene he's being a lot more subtle.

Season 2b update: Willow finally got an episode dedicated to her and it was much better than Gus’s. It’s because it focused on her but also tied into the main story. Hunter was great in it. It just felt way more fun than a willow episode should’ve been.

I think the reason Belos seemed so much less threatening and more like a "kind, broken old man" as opposed to a tyrannical dictator is because the show was actually trying to manipulate us the way that he manipulates Hunter, while also at the same time hinting at Belos possibly being "misunderstood". It's common with abusers that they'll alternate between what seems like two completely different entities, for example, using flattery, gifts and over the top affection to win over the victim and then suddenly switch to controlling and manipulating them, using the previous love-bomb as a way to confuse the victim or use it against them. It's not the same thing but I see the same sort of principle in Belos' behaviour towards Hunter. If you pay attention you can see in his body language that Belos isn't being completely genuine, he is constantly portraying a smile to Hunter, only showing his true emotions in short glimpses (right before "goodnight, Hunter") or when his face is turned away from Hunter. He also has his hand behind his back for almost the entirety of the sequence, which in body language can signify that the person is holding back or trying to control what they express to you. It's my own interpretation of it and merely speculation but I do believe this was their intention for two reasons, if you pay attention to the music (you can look up Belos' theme, although I'm not sure if it's his theme lol) before his face is revealed there is a more sinister and morbid tune up to the very exact moment he shows his face in which it switches to a more whimsical and melancholic tune for a moment, before then going back to having more sinister undertones while still keeping the generally much more softer and wise sounding melody. I also immediately saw people making excuses for Belos when they previously wouldn't have (like "he doesnt seem evil, maybe hes being controlled by the titan" when they admitted they previously would've never made this statement). Although, I do think there was some genuinity in his words as he speaks fondly of the human realm, and in the storyboards without gettting too sidetracked here (which you can look up, King Pecoras eclipse lake storyboards) the dialogue is actually different where Belos describes the human realm in a more detailed and opinionated way, which I don't really know how it's important to what I'm saying apart from Philip Wittebane theories but it feels important lmao but moving on. Sorry for the essay, that was just me sharing my thoughts on that specific thing. I've been waiting for you to make a video on season 2 and am very glad you did, I agree the original video was too harsh and edgy but past that I did generally agree with your points both about season 1 and season 2, especially about episode 1's dialogue and the general pacing of the show, but I also share the same turn around with season 2 and enjoyed it a lot more, and became very fixated on the show starting at episode 6. I'm not sure if this is true as I haven't looked for a credible source so please take it with a grain of salt but I believe even Dana Terrace herself said she wasn't so happy with season 1 and had more limitations as compared to season 2 (although that still doesn't excuse a lot of the writing problems, but is something to consider). I really enjoyed this video and I hope that The owl house continues on this track.

while for the most part I agree with your critique, my own interpretation of episode 4 was a bit different. I took it as an allegory for the ways that parents deal with chronic illnesses in their kids, an allegory so accurate at times it hurt. Obviously, this doesn't take away the flaws from that episode, but I really appreciated the obvious care and metaphorical depth they gave what could have otherwise been a bit flat.

Season 2 was a massive improvement for sure. My main concern is how well the season will manage to tie everything together at the end of the season. So far Season 2 has been mostly setup and Season 1 doesn't give me a lot of confidence in their ability to tie things together in a satisfying way. With that said, If the second half of Season 2 manages to be of the same quality it'll be an excellent season.

And him being on par with Amity’s skill and slightly getting the upper hand in the end shows his power because we’re always told how powerful Amity is.

It was hard for me to enjoy S2 cuz I went through my overly critical phase and started to actually watch episodes only so I could LOOK for flaws instead of trying to enjoy it in spite of them, but after rewatching I liked it a lot more and started to appreciate the story in front of me. I still think some episodes should have focused on singular arcs instead of continuing them in the next episode in favor of a B plot, but I still think it is a massive improvement overall. Great video!

I’ll be honest, i can relate. S1 I enjoyed, though there were definitely filler episodes that I could care less about (ex: the body swap episode), “Lumity” feeling rushed, only existing for the sake of representation, and then the season finale not feeling quite right. I don’t remember when and why, but at some point I just looked at TOW much more critically and had a hard time enjoying it, with the exception of Hunter’s episodes and when they gave Gus a little character development. Don’t get the wrong idea, I didn’t outright despise any of the episodes, but I had a considerably harder time getting into them, even if they were good. Perhaps I should do the same and see whether my opinions change, I’m just glad I’m not the only one feeling like this.

It's really nice to see Cartoonshi genuinely enjoy and be invested in something. Also, a small explanation on Luz and Amity not being a lesbian couple: They are actually a sapphic couple. Sapphic refers to a relationship between two women, but one or both might not be lesbian. Example: If a pan girl and a bi girl are dating, they are in a sapphic relationship. Hopefully this cleared up some confusion.

While I'm still not a big fan of the Owl House, it's really refreshing to see it actually improve rather than getting worse over the course of its run. However, with the news of Disney cancelling the show there's a high possibility that the creators will have to rush things and the quality of the series becomes even worse. Your not alone. I personally think season 1 was pretty slow and had a lot of problems with character consistency. Especially with Eda. But season 2 was a big Improvement and made me happy EDIT: Yoo! EDIT 2: I also forgot to mention that Willow and Gus didn't really have any point in season 1, besides Willow having a past friendship with Amity. There was pretty much nothing else there until the finale where they just be the support. Season 2 is looking pretty hopeful for Gus but I hope Willow get something to do as well. I think the problems of season 1 occasionally showed up. Like the fact that the principal suddenly likes the kids and he misses them. Or that the emperor's coven is kind of a joke who use spears and swords instead of their magic, even though they're supposed to be the best of the best Or that the principal can just do whatever he wants and can just hand out palismen to the students, even though Belos desperately needs them and restricts them. Or that Luz in the first episode is incredibly poverful, even though the power of glyphs depends on their size. And sometimes the dumb writing can leak in, but it doesn't ruin the experience But other than that, it's good. The music reminds me of dead cells and I think it fits in the medival magic-fantasy setting, the characters are interesting and I especially liked Hunter and Luz's dynamic and I'm curious where the creators will go with it. Hunter has a much darker worldview on things and has very few good things in his life. He has been conditioned that you must be useful or you will be thrown away and that people only do nice things because they expect something in return. Luz however can fulfill her wildest dreams, and found friends and love in the process. But to me it also seems that these characters seem to change a bit as well, with Hunter getting just a bit more positive things in life, and Luz getting more serious and regretful of her actions. It's great

The flaws of the show overall are honestly almost unredeemable Like the world building, lore and some character arcs like Amity One of the biggest flaws of this show in the first season (apart from the pacing and inconsistent arcs and lessons) is making the world building and lore more consistently believable. Like the fact that they called music "human noises" even though they DO have music in their world and the fact that Grom exists which is a stupid tradition and one of the cliches of a fantasy show that I really hate. What's funny to me is that Amphibia does everything TOH does bad at the best and the only issue I have with Amphibia can be found in TOH (which is mostly the lack of fluidity, excitement, thrill, expression and realism in their animation in the fight/action scenes. Like, Marcy dying was such a heartbreaking moment but the visuals could be done so much better. I also don't like how they tried to make some heartwarming episodes despite not being sure if Marcy is okay)

I would add the fact the only reason the key was damaged in the first place is that they brought it straight up to the bad guys for no reason. Than the imposter Luz thing doesnt make sense becasue she lived months without making suspicions even though she knows nothing about the human world emplying Luz's mom is as stupid as Timmy Turner's parents. i think the last season will be a clusterfuck because Belos does not have motivations and the crew has to pull up random nonsens that will contraddict what we have seen of the show so far.

That's almost definitely a part of it and it's been something that has been plaguing linear storytelling for a long time now. But this isn't anything new and shows like Star versus the forces of evil still managed to pull out a whole bunch more seasons. I'm going to have to agree with cartoonshi's conspiratorial thinking on this one. Disney maybe allowing inclusion on other shows but from what I've seen it's very censorable for international audiences, The owl House is much less so.

True Phineas and Ferb, Gravity Falls and Amphibia are really lucky. Phineas and Ferb has ended the way that Dan Povenmire and Marsh wanted to end. Gravity Falls has ended the way that Alex Hirsch wanted to end And Amphibia probably is going to end soon by the creator's wishes (Matt Braly). But I'm getting honest, even though Disney is a company that make bad decisions frequently, at least Disney gives a chance to it's cartoons to grow, unlike Nickelodeon that literally kills every show that doesn't reach the popularity of SpongeBob and The Loud House nowadays.

About the "Doesn't fit the disney brand" It's not about themes or a darker tone. It's the way the show is produced. Disney prefers episodic comedies/sitcom like shows rather than serialized/lore filled shows cause little kids would find it confusing to watch and less engaging (also to be able of milking with Reruns and selling toys). That's what they meant with "Fitting the disney brand"

I actually felt the same way you did about s1, i was not expecting to completely fall in love with the show in s2 and yet here I am and I'm so mad what they did to s3. Disney is being rightfully bashed for the descion and reasons behind it and I'm delighted watching them hear it. I can only hope the massive attention and praise the show is getting will allow for the spin off shows and comics Dana wants to do with the franchise. Because the least disney can do after canceling what could've been a phenomenal season is give the franchise opportunities to explore cut plots and expand on characters in additional content. Dana wants to do it and disney is apparently noticing the outpour so its very possible. Hunter quickly became my favorite character, belos being in 2nd ( he's become so compelling and the backstory being implied for him is so interesting). On that point tho- Personally, I am fine with the face reveal for several reasons. I think for one, they wanted to show belos from hunter's perspective, the loving caring uncle he sees behind the mask. It gives us a better sense why hunter follows him and loves him despite the treatment, because he gets to see these soft sides that keep him further latched to him. It also shows off how manipulative he is, his soft face contrasts hard with his "replaced " talk with hunter. It shows off another side to him and gives us more of a reason to understand why hunter doesn't see him as a bad person through his eyes. I think the second reason tho, we needed to see his face for the next episode, because of uh (spoilers) with the fact they're implying heavily the original human, Philip wittebane, IS belos. Well, seeing the statue of Philip and his brother (who looks identical to hunter) , its pretty cool when you pause to realize that they're identical. Leaves us on more to theorize before s2b. Its a "blink and you'll miss it" moment , but pausing to catch the fact belos and Philip are identical to further push that theory is so cool. Belos being the human is not a shocking twist, but the hints towards it while also dropping his backstory to understand his motivations more, adding onto the implication hunter is a clone he made of his decreased brother.... I love it, I desperately want to know what happened to get him this way. I liked belos in s1, I love him a lot these days, everything building around him is so interesting and I look forward to hearing more about it. And if we get that hunter spinoff show idea his VA wants, maybe we can explore the Wittebane drama further because personally I find it so compelling.

Honeslty part of the reason i so enjoy the owl house is beacuse It's probably the first show I've ever seen both sort of take a shot at or bash found family. By which I mean the last owl house episode we have had so far has both bashed it and appreciated it. It kinda touched on how it's not so great of a thing.... If you already have a good family that loves you. At that point you're just settling up to hurt your original family AND your new found one as you're developing strong bonds with both. This entire episode is basically addressing Luz mistakes and flaws. She chose to stay in the isles and lie to her mom. Despite her mom loving her deeply and giving her a nice home it still wasn't enough for Luz. The basilisk pointed this out and how Luz wanted some fantasy adventure. Giving up something others lack but badly want for....what? And her mom was very hurt by learning Luz chose to stay. Very, very hurt. Now Luz is starting to realize how much she's hurting her family with her actions. If she stays in the isles she hurts her mom. She leaves, she hurts eda and the rest who now NEED her in their lives to br happy and keep stable as she's a pillar for them. No matter what. She's gonna hurt someone she cares about Despite what Luz herself said in some ways? She's still the same girl she was from episode 1. Still stuck in wanting a fun fantasy adventure she can go home from at the end of summer and leave behind witha smile. Just like her fanfiction. But it's finally starting to hit home it's not that simple and won't work that way. yeah, the reality of her sitaution is settling in. Like: she LEAPT at the chance to "have an exuse" to where she had been. She went from "doppleganger!" real fast, to "Sweet! A way out!". Showing she's not grown much and still wants it both ways and a fun adventure. As said: It really dunked on the found family... while still praising the found family. It's not a bad thing. But when you already have a good family...

I guess on their TV channel where episodes are aired weekly, Disney doesnt really like that and would prefer shows where episodes can be watched without context of previous ones, such as Phineas and Ferb and Big City Greens. I think because Gravity Falls and Amphibia partially function like this they were able to get all the episodes the creator needed, but I dont really know how Disney functions.

I feel like a lot of the issues you mentioned with season 1 can be chalked up to Dana or the team (or both) trying to appease Disney. Now that season 3 has come out it's become apparent that each season has gotten more intense and emotional and (imo) closer to Dana's original vision. I forget where I saw it (twitter maybe?) but season 1 Disney made Dana add/focus on things she really didn't want to (for example, Disney wanted her to hype up the school bits so that kids in school could more relate) and I think that's why the season felt inconsistent. She was cramming things in there she didn't want to cram. Given that most of Disney's other cartoons (and even some of their live action shows) have had 1 episode where everyone switches bodies to learn that everybody has it equally difficult I wouldn't be surprised if those were things Disney made her shoehorn in (especially since she didn't know season 3 would be cut short; she may have been more willing to take an episode away from plot to give Disney what they wanted if she was under the impression she could take as many episodes as needed to tell her story).

My main issue with this show is that n matter how good season can be and will be, there were arcs that are technically finished but still didn't feel finished to me. Like, before Lumity, Amity was the typical bully that doesn't like getting her spot taken and I wanted them to take care of that more professionally but they butchered it and suddenly she becomes the shy girl who likes kids, is sorry for Willow and is suddenly in love with Luz.

Your opinions on the first season are as valid as your opinions on the second. Like you said, you were looking at the trends of modern cartoons, so you weren't wrong. I didn't mind the more episodic nature of Season 1, I feel even the least plot progressing episodes still provided info on the characters and aspects of their world! I also feel walking into The Owl House with an open mind really caused me to enjoy it more from the start and get emotionally invested with Amity's development and the second to last episode! Season 2 really blew me away, with every episode's revelation being larger than the last. I do agree it's weird Gwen brings up visiting Eda often but she never showed up in the first season. Ooh, and I really liked how it wasn't a huge buildup to seeing Belos unmasked. The reveal helped to show me his kinder side towards Hunter, yet still reminding that he doesn't allow him to do the same things kids his age do.

Listen don't get me wrong I love the show but I can't help but think Lumity is rushed as hell. Luz literally friendzoned Amity in season 1, then it took two episodes after season one for the writers, story boarders, and animators to dye Luz's face pink every time Luz and Amity make eye contact. Edit: I also do not like how as soon as Lumity was basically canon (S2 Ep2) and before Willow and Gus were just relegated to side characters. This also happened with Eda. I feel like the writers are trying to put her back in the main cast area if the show instead of reoccurring character.

It really was to me honestly I just wish we got at least a bit more time for Luz to at least understood that Amity had a crush on her and then realized her feelings for Amity later on.

I did like the impressive improvement when it came to the second season but some of the problems from the first season did show up ( but a whole lot less ) As with Guz and Willow barely being in the show at this point due to having little screen time with willow and somewhat of a episode for Guz and seeing how he got hit hard by puberty with him growing and his voice dropping a bit in just a week and barely knowing that much about them making them pretty forgettable characters. As with the emperors coven not knowing who the golden guard really looks like and also why does the emperor coven that is well known for only accepting the best and strong magic user's consists of mostly guardsmen with spears and swords to not even using magic once. But the rest is decent to great and I generally enjoyed the second season and it makes the moments light hearted to dark beautifully and it doesn't take you out of the experience making it wonderful time as well with the music being one of the best heard from a show

I really like the Owl house not only for the representation as an enby, I loved Raine and how casual they where and I can understand how Luz's impulsivity can confuse or embarrass people like me but thats cuz I have ADD and have an impulsivity problem just not to luz's degree other that that I'm just happy that you can admit when you make mistakes and that we all don't witch hunt

While I agree that this season was a massive improvement it definitely didn't change the major flaws the first season still had. I couldn't get invested in the characters due to the lackluster writing and pacing. It's just too fast for me to get an emotion out.

@@lazyvoid7107 Honestly I highly doubt that. Remember that the writer of this show is literally married to/the fiancee of Alex Hirsch the creator if gravity falls. I'm not saying that guarantees that the writer will be just as good but she definitely has help on how to tell the exact story she wants to in a certain set of time. I think the writer was dead set on having lumity in early on and developed through the season's but that came at the cost of story length. I also heard that Disney insisted on hexside and it's subplot wanting a school in the show or something like that. Which makes a lot of sense, because looking at it hexside isn't really that important and does seem kinda forced into the plot.

It was fast-paced as hell but honestly I thought they managed the fast pace nicely, something that I think he addresses at the beginning of this video. A fast place isn't necessarily a bad Pace as long as it's written well and I enjoyed the writing this season so far

@@noremac7216 I agree. And I think that if it wasn’t as fast paced as it was, they’d run into the same issue as Star Vs. TOH truly doesn’t have a lot of time left and they need to use all the time they have wisely. When you don’t do this, you’ve gotta cram everything into the last few episodes. Star Vs. was proof that this doesn’t work.

Acually creator herself stated why Owl House was cancelled... Because it's not episodic show... Or in other words they want to make Disney version of Teen Titans GO. Show that can endlessly run on TV so kids will watch it and don't need to put much money to produce it. It's the same reason why Duck Tales reboot was cancelled too. So yeah reson is money as usual.
