Thank you, Sir! I read this story at age 11, or so, in a horror anthology. Years later I looked it up, but misread the author as Guy De Maupassant. It has been forty plus years since I read the original, and the specifics escape me, but I will never forget the impact this story had upon me. Compare to Lovecraft, Stephen King, etc. This has stood out in my mind for a lifetime for some.

Brilliant story! A Touch Of Chill is a great collection of hers, I got it through the school book club when I was in primary school back in the 80's and it really unsettled me, especially one story called Power-Cut 🙂

She did a lot of stuff for older kids/teen readers, and some of her novels are more historical, but her spooky stuff is always class.
