Night of the Eagle was the film version of Fritz Leiber's Conjure Wife. The Devil Doll was the film of Merritt's Burn Witch Burn. Both great movies and novels and easy to mix up since The Night of the Eagle was also called Burn Witch Burn in some theaters for some reason. Confusing stuff altogether. I enjoyed your unpacking. I love Joseph Payne Brennan. I First Read "Slime" in Alfred Hitchcock's Monster Museum (edited by Robert Arthur) when I was a maybe 13. I loved "Levitation," in Nine Horrors and a Dream. I read it out loud to nine year old kids once and they liked it. Then I was blown away when I discovered "The Horror of Chilton Castle" which is absolutely chilling. One of my favorite horror stories of all time. You do fine work and I can understand why readers appreciate you.

Damn, you’re right! Thanks for that! I can see why I got them mixed up, both great films though! Yeah, I’m going to read that JPB book when I’ve got a few days off, so I can just plough through it in a couple of sittings. Slime is one of the ones I’ve read. I’ll have to find Chilton Castle, I don’t think I’ve read that one. And thank you, it’s always nice when my efforts are appreciated. 😁

@@redbeard-horrorbooksvinyl3060 You can find the Horror of Chilton Castle in the anthology Fine Frights: Stories that Scared Even Me - edited by Ramsey Campbell. I also found it once in a children's anthology (I warned the children's book store owner), but I can't recall the name. It might be in The Feaster from Afar, a Midnight House collection.

The important thing to know about those particular Lovecraft reprints is that they were the first to use the restored text that S.T. Joshi prepared from the best sources available that are the closest you can get to what Lovecraft actually wrote. Earlier editions repeated any errors, and dodgy editing that flawed the original publications. 🙂

Ah the guilt of spending too much money on books and records, I know the feeling well! But what the hell, you need to pamper yourself sometimes, and you deserve it - at least that's what I always tell myself. And what a great selection of books you've treated yourself to. That Frank B Long looks great - I picked up a 2-volume set of his stories (The Golden Age of Weird Fiction) from Wildside Press last year - wonderful. Now you're talking - Basil Copper - a favourite of mine - never seen that collection before. last year bought the 3-volume edition of his short stories from PS and followed that up this year with the 7 volumes of his Solar Pons stories (also from PS). A collection of the John Silence stories has been in my Amazon wish list for quite a while - need to move that to purchased.
