I collect differently than both of you, as you suggested. I buy hardcovers and paperbacks -- usually firsts. But in addition to enjoying something to read, I consider books to be objets di arte in a physical sense. Yes, I collect cover artists in addition to authors and publishers. I try to buy the best condition I can find at a reasonable price. Sometimes I read these carefully. But often, I will run into a worn out reading copy or a cheap edition of the same book -- and that is the copy I will read. The nice paperback copies, I always bag so they will remain in condition. Then I can lend or give away the cheap copy if I find it a good read to recommend. I am also trying to figure out an efficient way to display books so people can see the covers instead of the spines. It's a difficult challenge. I like the revolving book racks, but that is not a complete solution for hardcovers and even digests and the like. One of these days I would like to design my own library. I collect mostly genre fiction: horror, fantasy, science fiction, crime, mysteries, westerns, JD novels, etc. I read whatever calls to me, but I can't keep up. I study mostly reference books. You could say I collect those as well.

Thanks for the analysis my friend. I suppose some of the suggestions could have used a bit of context to explain why they are collected. Things like my Pelicans certainly aren't at the top of my tbr pile but they are part of the Penguin story and as such will be included in my collection. With a handful of exceptions, none of my vintage paperbacks are bagged up. A few of the rarer, more valuable books are now bagged but 99.9% are nude on the shelf! I'd say we actually have stacks in common and could spend countless evenings over a few pints talking books🙂 The Star Wars toys were mainly bought at the time in the late 80's and have been kept as new, even my original loose set from when I was a kid. Bought initially because I just loved it, now a massive collectible. That's just lucky but never planned for. Buy what you like paying off. I think we should attempt to do a livestream together, that would be cool and potentially we can reach different audiences, let me know🙂

Hi Jules! I hope I didn’t sound critical in any way, I’m a big fan of your channel and what you do. I always love nattering with fellow paperback obsessives. A live stream sounds like a wonderful idea! Drop me a line at redbeardtattoosheffield@gmail.com and we can take it from there. 😀

I enjoyed each of the videos, actually, as i regularly watch both channels, and it was great seeing the comparisons and differences between collectors. I live abroad and struggle to find anything i want. The livestream is a good idea.

I've stopped collecting horror and genre paperbacks for the time being because the prices are getting ridiculous. There are few bookshops where I live so most of my buying is online, and the real problem (excluding obscene prices) is so many people cannot grade the books they sell correctly. I buy books to read but if I am spending money on a book I want the book in the condition I bought it, and not with water damage or a split spine etc. Great video. Thanks.

Totally agree! I’ve had rants about a grading system for paperbacks. Maybe it’s time I stepped up and created one! 😀 Glad you enjoyed the vid.

I think you'd find some of my book collecting material interesting - Jules and I used to work together and we're good friends, but our collecting approaches often differ (I'm not so much a completist as Jules is) but i am big on condition, though reading is the thing for me ultimately. I kind of fall inbetween you and Jules, really. Have just subcribed, will watch some more of your stuff!

Great Channel. I have a small box of British Fantasy Society Fanzines and other stuff from the 90s I have to dispose of. Is there any way I could get them to you?
