A hat trick happens in European football matches where the referee does a magic trick using a top hat. The player to guess if the animal that gets pulled out is a bunny or a dove gets to kick the ball first.

For Lupin III, it looks like the money bags are all lined up along the top of the stage, and the dotted-line ones you were trying to grab are probably just indicators for where you're supposed to drop them.
@ravagingwolverine
@ravagingwolverine 2 жыл бұрын
That was my first impression and that is correct having checked it. I think the player score indicators led Joe to believe all the action took place below rather than being part of the play field, and I can understand that confusion, especially when sampling all the games. I have a feeling he still wouldn't have liked it much more, but at least we know that's how the game works.
@Wyrdwad
@Wyrdwad 2 жыл бұрын
@@dragonchaserkev Yeah, there are a ton of classic games that get very unfairly dismissed because the majority of players simply don't "get" them, indeed. I'm not saying Lupin III here is one such game -- it honestly looks to be a fairly run-of-the-mill maze game at best, so as Ravagingwolverine said, I rather doubt Joe would've liked it much better even if he HAD figured out how to play it -- but I've played a ton of classic-era games that I'm SO GLAD I took the time to learn properly. Alcazar: The Forgotten Fortress is a good example -- I played it on MSX, but it was also on Colecovision and a number of other microcomputers of the era. It's from 1984, and at first glance, it looks like a proto-Zelda game, but with garish graphics, no music, and procedurally generated dungeons that get very samey very quickly. It's only after you read the manual that you learn it's a frigging STEALTH GAME. On the harder difficulties especially, you need to use clues, both visual and aural, to figure out what enemies await you in the surrounding rooms, and then use whatever items, weapons, or traps happen to be at your disposal to dispose of them quickly... preferably while they're still off-screen. It's INCREDIBLY strategic, INCREDIBLY tense, and INCREDIBLY addictive. It's honestly kind of bonkers just how sophisticated a stealth game it is, considering it was made in 1984. Beating it on the hardest difficulty is no small feat, but is extraordinarily satisfying when you pull it off, and I've come to regard it as one of my personal favorite games of that era now. But if I hadn't read a PDF of the Colecovision manual that I found online to figure out how things work... I would've probably just dismissed it as a fairly boring predecessor to The Legend of Zelda, and moved on to something else. And OH MAN would I ever have been missing out if I'd done that.
@GameSack

I'm not sure why I didn't notice those up there! Probably had something to do with the monochrome graphics.

He understood that, that's why he said "try to get the money bags" and did not say "a game where you try to get dotted outlines." What he didn't understand was how to get the money bags, as they are all the way at the top of the screen. In an area where there were no platforms to climb, to reach them.
@Wyrdwad
@Wyrdwad 2 жыл бұрын
@@godchi1dvonsteuben770 Er... Not sure if joking. ;) He did NOT understand that, as evidenced by his own reply to this very comment thread. And there's no climbing platforms in that game -- it's a maze game, meaning it's overhead-view and you can move in all four directions.

@Bloodreign1
@Bloodreign1 2 жыл бұрын
Jungle Hunt itself is just a reworking of Jungle King, which could've gotten Taito sued by the Johnny Weismuller estate due to his trademark Tarzan yell to start the game off. So they removed the yell, gave the sprite a reworking into an older man, and off Jungle Hunt went. Still seems odd that he still saves a young girl at the end from cannibals, and kisses him and tells him she loves him after she is saved.

The TATE MODE bit *still* has me laughing almost 30 minutes later. Good stuff. The rotatable screen is this device’s secret weapon. It’s really nifty. I’m a tiny bit surprised that Alpine Ski and/or Zoo Keeper didn’t make it in. I can still play ‘em via Taito Legends, but they would’ve been great fits here. There’s not enough unique coin-ops here to draw me away from compilations/Arcade Archives releases that I currently own, but I can definitely see the appeal.

I got one of these from Amazon Japan, and also had an issue with the spinner. I noticed there was a rattle in the controller so I opened it up (six screws under the rubber feet) and sure enough a tiny white plastic washer was loose in there. I actually dismantled the entire spinner assembly as while it span and had resistance, it occasionally got stuck. I put the washer in the place I *think* it should go and it did improve it. Depending on how tight you screw the three screws that fix the assembly to the underside of the control panel, seems to affect the resistance of the spinner. Right now I’ve probably got it slightly too tight, so will need more adjustment. It’s definitely a bit of a faff, but it works.

The two things for me that push me away: 1) Games. I would realistically only want to play 10-15 games. A lot of them I'd play once for a little bit and then never again. 2) The price. For a mini console, it's REALLY expensive. Don't get me wrong, it looks really well built and that rotating screen is a nice thing to have, but when you're shelling out $200+ (not including any of the controllers or accessories), that's a hard pill to swallow , especially since I know I'd only play a handful of games included.

New Zealand Story is up there with Rainbow Islands as "games that absolutely went off when they came to European computers". We absolutely LOVED them over here. I always liked how cute the game was. There's some weird feature where if you lose your last life in a specific way, you don't get a Game Over. Instead you're taken to Heaven where you will either get a bad ending where the main character dies or you'll be able to find a hidden exit to take you back to the main game. This is the only arcade game I can think of that sort of gives you a free continue.

You know, when all the mini consoles first started coming out, I was intrigued, but over time I've really soured on them. These ought to be compilation discs/carts on PS4/Switch/etc, and they could still offer special controllers. Most of these games, in fact, were released on compilations on PS2 and Xbox nearly 20 years ago. In the meantime, Taito is releasing a 10 game garbage compilation on Switch with only very early releases that all together don't come even close to a gigabyte at full retail. I'd spend $40 for a compilation disc with all of these, even though I own pretty much all of them in one form or another. I'd even pony up for the trackball/spinner controller. I'm not in for another mini, though. That said, great review!

@@TebbieBear Thats why I am a big fan of the Evercade. Instead of needing to buy a while new plug-n-play unit, you can just buy decent little collections to expand your library. The hardware isnt perfect, but its a good concept. Technically, this unit could also add more games via its card slot, but I kind of doubt they will.

eh..... there's actually only 2 machines that are at all like this. Sega Astro City mini and Taito Egret 2 mini. SNK is barely comparable, and other mini consoles are totally different.

the rotating screen is actually a feature of the Egret candy cabs in Japan, so it makes a lot of sense that they'd include it here (though I don't think the actual cabs do it the same way) Also i have to know, is Tatsujin good enough to play it without owning the box? Do they ever explain what was in the cargo barge?

The mini Taito Egret II allows the screen to be manually rotated into tate mode because its a feature of the actual physical candy cabs - they include a rotatable frame the holds the CRT, which is intended for a single person without an outrageous amount of upper body strength to easily swap the monitor between horizontal and vertical positions on the fly. It's part of why retro enthusiasts and MAME mavens seek out the Egret II in particular - rotating the CRT on most other comparably sized cabinets (including Sega's Astro City line) is a 2 - 3 person job that requires disconnecting some of the cables, realigning the yoke, and basically an hour or so of time at minimum. Whereas doing in on the Egret II is way simpler and more stable, not to mention easier to automate if you're the type of person who ads servo-motors to everything. Putting that feature on the Astro City mini would have been odd because in the Japanese arcade culture context the Egret II is well known for having such a feature that even more popular cabinets that shipped with better games (like Astro City) lack.

Dude. Hell of a call out on Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf. Just have the manual nearby for referencing your club distances because that pigeon of a caddy knows nothing. The term first appeared in 1858 in cricket, to describe H. H. Stephenson taking three wickets with three consecutive deliveries. Fans held a collection for Stephenson, and presented him with a hat bought with the proceeds. The term was used in print for the first time in 1865 in the Chelmsford Chronicle. The term was eventually adopted by many other sports including hockey, association football (soccer), Formula 1 racing, rugby, and water polo.

For those asking about the trackball/spinner in Mane, I’ve read it’s recognised as a mouse of some description. Think the trackball is the mouse, the spinner is the scroll wheel and the buttons are mapped to a really high button count (late 20’s/30) which isn’t recognised by Mame. So currently you can use the trackball and spinner, but the buttons do nothing.

I was super curious to what the Lupin III game was going to be when the title showed up towards the beginning of the video, but unfortunately it's just a super early 80s game without much to do with the series... I really wish they'd make some sort of amazing stealth adventure game based on the franchise nowadays now that the technology is there to really make something like the show.

Fun fact: Tournament Arkanoid was the real 2nd Arkanoid game. It's identical to the original, only it has different, more challenging stages. It was only released in America and it remains the only Arkanoid game in the series to be exclusive to the arcades. I kinda wish it was on the Egret II Mini but including 3 Arkanoid games is already pretty good.

I say Rastan the same way you do. I tried saying it the other way and just ended up sounding like The Cowardly Lion in Wizard of Oz when he says "Forest" when he's singing "If I were King of the Forest" in the Emerald City. Also this thing is a time capsule that shows why I enjoy older gaming over modern in some ways. While not all of them are hits everyone back then just experimented and was willing to try anything to stand out and be more creative than the competition. Now games have to have this or that in them, and their genres are sharply defined, but back then it was anything goes.
