The Sega CD was always a weird console in my mind. Sega didn't know how to properly make games for it. I think they could have made more games like Terminator, but tried to force the FMV games on the consumers. Great video btw!
@FridayNightArcade4 жыл бұрын
That's a great point - I would have liked to have seen more games like this where it's like okay, let's just make a really really good platformer with excellent sound quality and some cool FMV cutscenes thrown in. FMV could have been a supplement but shouldn't be what the whole core gameplay elements were based around.
@TheDutchGhost4 жыл бұрын
It wasn't just Sega who was at fault here. There were few developers who really made use of the extra space and capabilities the Sega CD offered. What most developers/publishers did was just take a 16-bit game, add a level, some new music, and occasionally some cutscenes. Only a handful of developers decided to make games that made full use of what the platform had to offer, games that could not be done on the 16 bit or at least not easily. FMV was this current trend at the time and everyone expected it to be the future. Thing was, most FMV games were absolutely terrible as a game primarily focused on videos offered little gameplay possibilities.

Wow, it's going for 85 to 100+ dollars now? I bought this game heavily discounted at retail a few years after it came out for about 15 bucks. It really is an awesome game and that soundtrack is masterful.

The Sega CD isn't exactly known for great games though. And I say that as someone who got one for Christmas when they first came out and then bought another one late in the Sega CD's life so I could play Monkey Island. My friend and I got them for Christmas the year they came out, when they were $300 I think, although it might have been $400, I can't remember at this point. But soon enough both of ours was collecting dust. I ended up trading my original in on some other games but then later on bought another one after I saw a few cool looking games. Turns out the games weren't that cool, definitely not worth what the system cost and the Sega CD really was Sega's first big blunder. IMO the damage the Sega CD, 32X and Saturn did to Sega's rep killed their hardware sales. Nobody trusted them to actually support a system after that. My Sega CD players got far more use as actual CD players than for playing video games.

Awesome Friday vid Aaron! I really feel that Sega CD could have been something but Sega just did everything wrong and it's a shame because I grew up with the Sega. Too many attachments, too many wires, bulky power sources...just bad but it did have some decent games. You may want to look into Shining Force CD. I've seen people play that and it's so much better than it's 16 bit counterpart. Have a great weekend bud. More live streams please! :D

Yeah, I just posted about how the Sega CD was Sega's first big blunder. I was dumb enough to own two of them lol. I got one for Christmas when they first came out and then traded it in. Later when they were being discounted I bought another one but had the same outcome....the games were mostly mediocre or bad and didn't justify upgrading from cartridges. And the "video" on those things looked like hot garbage even back then. I remember playing Sewer Shark and just thinking how shitty it looked and played. Mine were mainly used for playing music CDs and collecting dust. Oh, and Golden Axe and Columns. Sol Fecius (or however it was spelled) was good too but none of those games needed to be on CD.

If this system only had more games like this.. Most developers didn't know what to do with all the extra space of the cds. Cartridge games had to be made with a limit of how big they could be, it was specially clear with arcade ports, full of cuts in animations, music, details and even characters and stages (I'm looking at the Sunset Riders for Megadrive). One of the main reasons Neo Geo games were so good (and expensive) compared to other 16 bits systems was that developers did't have that size limit for their games. The Mega CD could have been a perfect system for arcade conversions, no limits to space and identical or even better sound quality.

I had a Sega CD for a few months back in 1993 or 1994... Dormmate next door neighbor rang up a big gambling debt on football bets. Gambling debt as it was I loaned him a hundred or two and asked for his Sega CD as collateral ( I had my trusty Genesis) He had no decent games for it or was tricky enough to keep them held back with his shitty collection of hair metal, which he knew I never looked through past his alphabetized Poison LPs. Anyways he got his debt paid off and paid me back and got his Sega CD back. How I wish this game was in his collection. I never even knew it existed!

But it's the first game I remember where you could first person drive car that you could find parts to upgrade its performance and looks. But then you could pull over and get out of the car and fight 3rd person villains with your sawed off double barreled shotgun. It was so unique for the times. Please check it out. @FridayNightArcade4 жыл бұрын
Well and it's not like that excess money even goes to the developers 30 years later. It's just some other shop or person price gouging a "collectible" item. That's why I don't frown on emulation as much as some. If a game isn't available in an official capacity on some modern day platform like a Wii Shop or virtual console or Steam or whatever, emulate the F out of it. Sure, original hardware is always going to be better, but some of these games are only being preserved through the process of emulation at this point because they're so hard to find and the company that made them is out of business or hasn't made them available on some sort of modern platform. Like if you go to a mom and pop retro shop and pay $200 for a boxed copy of Chrono Trigger, that money isn't going to the developers. It's just going in the shop's pockets.
@Vichedges4 жыл бұрын
Friday Night Arcade yeah and many games that people are curious about and are high prices collectibles are terrible games. The people who “frown” in emulating a 30 year old out of print video game probably have a financial stake in vintage games. I used to have a huge vintage game collection but I rarely played any of them. They just sat in boxes in my house. I have great memories of NES but the fact is most of them today just aren’t that fun to play for me. The only vintage games I regularly play are Tetris 2(highly underrated IMO) and Super Tecmo Bowl, which is still as fun for me as it was in 1993 or whenever it came out.
