Hello from Moscow, Rus
@joelhaas765
@joelhaas765 11 ай бұрын
My parents and my younger sister moved up to Moscow from Nor. Cal. back in 2010 and spent most of 10 years in the area. I’ve spent quite a bit of time around Moscow and feel like you two hit the high points. I ended up moving to Southern Idaho and feel like I get judged more for being a “California” down here. It was never an issue around Moscow. Moscow is more small town in a good way than many small towns are in Southern Idaho. But the lack of job opportunities in my career field have kept me from moving up there. My parents and sister were part of a *certain* church community that tended to attract people to the area. This helped them fit in and make friends.

Sounds about right. Think you’ll ever move up there? What do you do for work?
@joelhaas765

I would still consider moving up there but probably wouldn’t be ready to buy a house right away. I work in the animal ag sector and there are certainly some jobs in my field around Moscow but fewer than Southern Idaho around Twin where I live now. But if I could find the right job and a good assisted living place for my Dad, I would probably move up there. I actually know more people around Moscow than where I live now.

After living in Idaho for already 2 years. I have to say it's the best state i've ever been/lived in. I'm a native Czech (Czechia in Europe) and i moved to US like 3 years ago. I'm still visiting my home country, but Idaho really got me. When I firstly visited US, I've been for like 3 months in CA. 1. LA 2. SD 3. SF 4. Brentwood 5. Vallejo. Then I moved to Eugene, Oregon for like a month, where i was really scared and at the same time surprised by the wildfires, so i went even more north to Montana. MT was a good, but the people weren't really friendly here, so that's when i decided to try Idaho and my man... Best decision of my life. My first Idahoan location was Idaho Falls, then Pocatello and then Boise. I hated that city soooooo much that i even told myself that it'd be better to move back to MT or even CA. But i gave it a shot and started exploring the north part of the state... That's when things started getting serious. I stayed in Airbnb in Lewiston and god damn... I fell in love with the culture, people and everything so much that i decided, that i don't wanna leave the state, especially not this north part of it. So i stared searching for properties to buy. Mainly houses with strong walls, not these paper typical US ones. And i found one in Moscow, ID. I live in this house for almost 2 yrs and I've never been happier. I got married to a local girl, retired, 2 dream cars in my garage (Grand Wagoneer 2022 & SL65 AMG 2009), never gotta work again. People here... amazing. Moscow is such a friendly and great place to live. I'd like to thank y'all for this beautiful experience that is still happening. I'm really living that American dream bby! God bless this country.

Wish the Best! A ať se nadále daří žít Americký sen.

My family and I moved up here in July 2020, so having been here and experiencing the winters, I totally agree with you on that. My wife wanted to move here because her sister and brother-in-law moved here in 2019 after taking a position at the Moscow Church of the Nazarene. We came up here sight unseen, not knowing what we were getting into. My wife loves it here and so do my 2 sons. I am ok with it, but I am not sure I want to live here the rest of my life. At some point, I might want to return to a less crowded part of my native Southern California, but not until it's housing and political issues are cleared up. That could be a while.

I’ve worked in Moscow and Pullman and very familiar with each town. In my overall opinion, I feel Moscow is my choice of the two towns. People are so much friendlier and there are a lot more choices of restaurants and shops. Both towns can have long lasting winters though. If a person is looking for a milder climate town but still close to Moscow/ Pullman area then my choice would be Lewiston, Idaho where I’ve lived and enjoyed for 10 years.

Listen, I must say.. compared to many parts of the US … no the food isn’t good or doesn’t compare… But that’s where the disagreements end… I’ve lived in many places.. originally from nj and just relocated back to nj for work. I lived in Moscow from 21-24’. The pros way outnumber the cons… Idaho I must say is the best state I’ve lived in. So dang beautiful…. Would I move back or retire in Moscow… or even Idaho? Damn straight I would.

Moscow is one of the more low-middle class to poverty stricken areas of Idaho. The Cost of living and homeownership is much higher than it should be. I like the winters as it feels like things slow down. Job opportunity is difficult and there is very little professional/white collar opportunities. Very much service/trade - these tend to be who you know in order to get your foot in the door. The universities bring in lots of educated people but there is too skilled of a workforce for the area. The university also brings in a drug/alcohol scene that influences locals and, in a small community, it can affect a high percentage of people. It is possibly the most liberal city in ID. To many educated people with lots of knowledge but possibly lacking wisdom. If you are looking for a Christian church, I would say that Moscow is not the right place for you. Moscow has lots of LDS. Non denominational Christian churches have not really survived or took off in Moscow. There is a church called Christ Church that has gained popularity but it essentially a cult. Christ Church is also responsible for the take over of a lot of business in the area and they tend to hire from within the church. Moscow was strict on the COVID restrictions. The k-12 school is progressive and I would be concerned about their ideology in comparison to the rest of majority conservative ID. Medical service and oncology is pretty poor. Moscow is the town I grew up in. There is a lot to go and do if you want to get outdoors. The town has plenty of parks and the mountains/wilderness is not far of a drive. That said, I wouldn't move back - partly due to cost of living and job/pay selection. Remove the university and I think then you have a great town. The influxes of ever changing university students creates a divide with the locals as I'm sure you can image. Best time of the year was when the college kids were out for the summer and back in their home town. That's when Moscow feels like a tight knit community. I would say go further north to Coeur d'alene ID if you are looking to move to north Idaho. However, Moscow is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Unique in its own way.

I grew up there, too. But moved away after graduating. Now, 30 or so years later I'm wishing I could've given my kids the beautiful experiences I had growing up there. Living, now, in a suburb of a large sprawling city with horrible air quality, I really miss the clean air and pedestrian friendly streets. Winters are harsh, but I feel its more because of how dark it is (think blue lights for depression avoidance) and humid, which (just like the heat) makes it feel colder. Its all about layers in that cold humidity. Growing up there, we could choose to avoid the yuck brought in by the Universities, and most of us did. (Looking at you, law students! 😂) But the diversity was amazing for such a small town. Visiting professors would bring their kids so I went to school with Australians to Iranians. And the inclusion growing up was also wonderful. But the elections were also fully involved events. People take that stuff seriously. Also religion. That can get touchy when people start slinging mud. I think there is a very different view, though, if you are townspeople or students. Afterall, the best time of year is absolutely in the summer after the students leave. Great video. Thank you for making it.
