This sketch will never grow old. It doesn't matter how many times I have watched it, it makes me laugh just as much every time. They both play an equally important roll in it. Just look at Ronnie Corbett's reactions and his muttering to himself. He reminds me of Charlie Hall - Laurel & Hardy's nemesis in so many of their films, and of course Ronnie Barker was a huge L & H fan. The bit at the end when it goes to The Two Ronnie's in the studio is very sad and poignant.

Let’s be honest though, they are basically a “one sketch wonder”. You ask 100 people on the street to name as many two Ronnie sketches as possible and I’d wager at least 90 of them could only say “four candles”. If you are ever forced to be present at the 4th birthday celebrations of a child, this sketch makes it worthwhile. The cake is brought out with four candles. Make eye contact with each adult in the room and you'll always find one who returns your glance with smiling eyes that say "Fork handles!" Parents - if your child is having a 4th birthday party, do NOT make a fancy arrangement of 20 candles in the shape of the numeral 4. It has to be four candles. It only happens once. You can revert to the 20 candles next year.

Every Brit of a certain age only needs to hear the words "Fork Handles"* to bring a fond smile to their face. * "Four Candles" does the job as well...

I work in a hardware store iron mongers and we made it to Thursday until the fork handles were mentioned

389 👎 ? Do those muppets simply not understand CLASSIC BRITISH COMEDY GOLD? How can anyone with a SENSE OF HUMOR not laugh at this? The timing, the writing is a MASTERCLASS. Never been comedy like this since and most likely never will be again.

Heard about this in a comment on a Rhod Gilbert stand-up vid. I'm not British...I'm a little hearing impaired...& the auto CC is really giving this an extra dimension lol Glad I came looking!!!

I know. Great stuff. Outstanding comedy sketch. Brilliant writing. Ronnie Barker was excellent. I remember men who were just like him. No social grace and yet they were often very kind. Completely harmless with good humour. His clothes were just so appropriate. Love his old shrunken jumper with it's holes in the elbows🤣.

Such an iconic sketch, two truly gifted people who knew how to provoke your inner self. Nothing like this be made again, innocent fun now is what? Thanks for reminding me what true comedy is about, with no agenda. Classic.

4 Candles from the Ronnies and Andrew Preview from Eric and Ernie represent the pinnacle of English humour, never equalled by anyone from anywhere and as side-splittingly hilarious now as they were 4 decades ago. 4 Candles is a work of genius, both in creation and performance. Sublime....

Amazing to know Ronnie Barker knew he was dying by then, so they designed this to deliberately be the last sketch they would revisit in the ‘Sketchbook’ and the show didn’t air until six months after his death. Professional to the end! RIP Ronnie B & Ronnie C

Best comedy sketch ever written. I have watched it countless times and it always makes me laugh and with affection for Britains greatest comedy duo.

I've watched the video several times. Since English is not my native language, I couldn't understand most of it. Even with auto-translation turned on, it didn't quite make sense. I only understood the beginning part about 'four candles and fork handles' and laughed a lot. I couldn't understand the rest. If you could write it down in English, I'd appreciate it. This isn't even anywhere near their best one which is Dr D3ath and many others better than this, such as name-droppers and British rail efficiency and so on.
