The UK's Windrush generation | Showcase Special

In this Showcase Special, we go on a journey through the trials and tribulations of the Windrush generation: the men, women and children who arrived in Britain from Commonwealth Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971 to help a nation that, after two successive wars, had become bankrupt. They shaped communities but often faced racism. And today, many are being told they may no longer remain in the UK. On the 70th anniversary of the migration, Miranda Atty talks to people of this generation expressing their feelings about the scandal, through art, music and photography.

I remember "Coldharbour Lane" you mentioned in the 1970's and 80's, when the Brixton riots happened, some of my family lived nearby, I visited several times a month for years, I will never forget during the riots of burning and looting (their own community's shops), my worse vision was seeing a whyte couple walking along peacefully, then about 10 "windrush" representatives, beat this man to near death, and then dragged the women into a nearby garden to culturally enrich her. this then is the reality of contribution from the windrush generation.

I think, "The Windrush family's": should = "get/receive: 1, "as much compo. (compensation): as poss.!!"!! And 2ndly; "as many tax -excemption's, as "!!"!!" M.K.S.

The original Windrush passengers considered Britain the Mother country and had a strong work ethic, most integrated well, also, you wouldn't know it from the pictures, but they weren't all dark skinned.

They did not come here to 'rebuild Britain', nor were they invited here by the British Government! They came to try & make a better life for THEMSELVES! Some Caribbean countries eg Jamaica were suffering the effects of a population explosion with 60 percent of babies being born out of wedlock, mass unemployment and resulting political violence - why didn't they 'rebuild' this state of affairs in their own country first?? Greater numbers emigrated to the US at the time, than to the UK. Because it was more difficult to get into the US, the UK was second choice.

Thanks for that. What I find annoying is they want us to thank them for coming over as you pointed out we didn’t want didn’t need them. The other thing I find unbelievable They could think that any country in the world would want them. They live in a fantasy World nobody has ever wanted them. And now I’m going on a bit but the lies these documentaries tell trying to alter history. Why doesn’t Ofcom get involved in this.

Who told you that? At that time Jamaica dollar was good, people were happy. People was able to travel to England without documentation, they were invited to help out country that owned them.

@@lmitchell7976 But the Jamaican government lent them the money for their boat fare to get over to Britain that’s how badly they wanted to get shot of them. And now they’re over here they have the highest number of single parent families of any other community so they have carried on in the nonchalant manner. The only difference is the British government picks up the bill to look after them. I know these are things that you do not want to hear but you must face reality.
