I loved this more than any other you have done. I think Ben's willingness to be vulnerable and not snooty was adorable. I also enjoyed trying to follow the French. I had four years of French in high school, and one in college. My dream is to one day visit Paris and be able to have a toddler's version of a conversation in French. Vive la Francaise!

I know what Ben’s going through! I worked in a kitchen once, despite it being in the Canadian prairies, that area was the landing spot for seasonal (winter) Quebec chefs, prep cooks and sous chefs who can’t find work in their province. They’d remove all the English labels in the kitchen so it was learn French or die, lol. At that time, I was making fifteen-hundred sandwiches a night, so I started just by knowing “pain le blie entier” and went from there. I remember a conversation with a particularly heated sous chef after a rough shift, I asked if he wanted tea he replied “oui, en cremé et miel” and I, tired, fed up repeated back “one cream, one honey, got it.” That was the thing that set him off, he just screamed at me “NO I AM NOT ENGLISH, I say MIEL not HOONEY!” That rant lasted half an hour, lol.

As a language learner and teacher, I have to say, Ben didn't follow the most important rule when listening to someone speak in another language: DON'T PANIC. Everything will be fine even if you don't catch everything being said, and panicking makes it even harder to understand.

Very very funny! Understand Ben's frustration... GCSE French does not prepare you for when speaking to an ACTUAL French person! They talk so quick that words meld together and my brain can't keep up!

Same for English, for a French who studied at school ! I've learned so much from watching videos and listening different accents ! Now I understand American and Australian accent, most of the time British accent (but so many differences for a region to another !). From a French point of view, English is just about stressed syllables and the rest is inaudible xD !

Well, I'm impressed with Ben's attempt, since Charles accent was quite unusual for me (I'm French btw) Although I kept yelling to Ben that pepper is poivre hahaha *Edit* I think Ben's French is very good as well as his accent, he only needs more practice :D and I am both an Egyptian and a French woman but I have lived my entire life in Egypt where the only accent I hear is the one my family has when they occasionally speak French. That's probably why I thought Charles' accent was a bit unusual to me. No offense intended :D

Gael Olivier well I'm also an Egyptian and lived in Egypt my whole life. My family on my father's side is mostly French and their accent is the one I grew up with so that's probably why I find Charles's accent unusual 😅 I can understand it but it just sounds very different for me

Gael Olivier While I am not French I am Irish, trust me when I say that accents can become incomprehenisble depending on the area eg. Donegal is hard but a culchie(irish slang for a country person) from Donegal is impossible for me (from Cork)

Phil Duggan that applies to both France and Egypt too! Here in Egypt we have different accents/slang depending on the region/city. Accents also differ between cities in France. My French bloodline origins from a city called Blois, but the family spread out to Paris as well so we tend to speak with a Parisien accent.

Btw "gummi" as Barry mentioned is slang for a condom, however it's also an eraser. Well an eraser would technically be "radiergummi" but we only ever said gummi....until we got into that age were everyone started understanding/acknowledging sex and you couldn't say anything without someone giggling/getting embarrassed because you said something that reminded them of anything to do with sex. After that we just said "radierer" until we all became mature enough to go back to the good old fashioned "gummi"

I loved this, Ben is at his most charming when he's completely out of his element, there is certainly something very endearing about seeing someone who is often very sure of themselves and confident put into a situation that leaves them baffled, amused, and in a slight panic. He really took this challenge in stride, and I'm honestly supremely impressed at how much French they all seem to speak.

As someone who lives in Belgium this made me crylaugh so much 😂😂 Because our country is half french, we (the dutch speaking part) start getting french lessons at the age of 10. Now I graduated last june and you'd think that after 8 yrs of french you'd at least be able to manage, but I had to make a phonecall last week to a french person and man. I was at utter loss.
