If I think about it, the only version of OutRun I ever had until the mid-2000s was the Sega Master System version. I remember going to downtown Montreal with my mother and siblings when I was around 14 and being able to play the arcade version one time (for just a few minutes, and I was crap at it) but, to this day, it's the only time I've played the arcade version in the arcade with arcade controls. I would've loved to have gotten the Genesis version of OutRun but I never saw it in stores. In 2006, I got the Playstation 2 "remake" of OutRun in the Sega Classics Collection (which I bought primarily for Virtua Racing) and I might have liked it more if I hadn't already bought OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast with modern gameplay, stellar graphics, and the full Ferrari license a couple of months earlier. Ignoring the lack of the Ferrari license in the OutRun "remake" (although I wish they'd have made the car at least look closer to the one in the already de-Ferrari-ed Dreamcast version), my big issue with it is that the car is a little too wide on the screen and the viewpoint is a touch too low so the car blocks more of your view of oncoming traffic compared to either classic OutRun or OutRun 2006. These days, if I want to play the original OutRun, I basically have the arcade perfect version with the unaltered Ferrari Testarossa sprite as a bonus on OutRun 2 on the XBox. Even if I want to play the Sega Master System version, I have to just play a ROM since my Master System hasn't worked in years. I might just get one of those Master System cartridge adapters for the Genesis eventually.

There is one more thing about the Sega Saturn version. You can run it in 60fps mode. Go to the "Option" menu and point your cursor to the Game Mode. Then hold down "A+B" (if running on emulator, it will depends on your joypad) and press LEFT or RIGHT either direction a few times. If done correctly, you will see a few more options like Japan(Smooth) and Overseas(Smooth). If you don't see it, your A+B button combo is wrong and try other buttons combo on your controller. I am playing the Japanese version (with better music option). The controller i am using is 8bitDo Pro 2 and my button combo is "B+RIGHT Shoulder" running on Retrobat.

Cool video, but objectively Cannonball is the best. it not only bug fixes some of the Arcade one's SEGA missed, it has the widescreen that the Switch version has, and a couple of never seen before camera angles, but most importantly it has 120fps without breaking the game logic, and once experienced, much the same the Saturn's 60fps made the arcade hard to go back to, 120fps makes it feel like the game it was always meant to be.

Love this video! I have been following you for a long time, and your first OutRun video is one of my favorite ones on YT. So this re recording is even higher on my fav list! I agree close to 100% on the order of things. I would make one small change, due to personal preference: At 3 would be the 3DS version: I love the 3D effect, and minus the car change, the 60 fps and conversion are done perfectly! the only down fall for me is due to the hardware: The analogue disc (i would not dare call this a analogue stick, as it's not high up for smooth control) feels so wrong (not only with OutRun, but with all games) that i prefer using the Dpad, making the control feel a bit twitchy, and watching a replay of me racing trough easy corners looks just silly this way. It also just feels off to me. At 2 would be the Switch conversion: Yes, i miss the 3D effect, but the Oled screen with popping colors and bigger size makes up for that. Combine this to the briliant feel of the analogue stick (on the Sega Saturn 3D pad in analogue mode, i have to arcgh the stick to mimick using a steering wheel and get smoother controll) while in the Switch (yes, also the non OLED version) conversion, you do not need to arch the stick, as it's so smooth in this game, you can just use left/right movement and still make a smooth easy corner looking and feeling like you use a steering wheel. At 1, just like you, the Sega Saturn version. Playing this game on a high end tube tv, using the 3D knights into dreams gamepad, just feels like a trip down memory lane, playing in the arcade. Add the proper Ferrari Testarossa and the remixes of the famous OutRun tunes, and a unlockable 60 fps version (In the Japanese version of OutRun on Saturn) and you have a winner! It took Sega exactly 10 years to give us a proper OutRun port for playing at home (1986 arcade - 1996 Sega Saurn) and i am STILL happy playing this conversion. Would not want to miss it, as i would even rather give back the Playstation 5, than the Sega Saturn for that reason alone 😛 Thanks for sharing this brilliant video. Thumbs up!

Nice video! So on the MSDOS thing. Aside from the various skills of whoever was involved in development and porting (hard to compare ANYONE to Factor 5, they're among the best of all time :D ), there was a HUGE range of hardware available both over time, and even at a given time. Outrun in your video appears to be an EGA game. EGA graphics are 16 static colors, no real hardware acceleration of any 2D functions (at least on your normal/average EGA adapter) and even an EGA setup was ridiculously expensive when it was new. A lot of people were still running monochrome PCs, or CGA (four color) machines. I was lucky enough to have EGA, but it was only really good for Sierra, Lucas, Origin type adventure games. Action games weren't great. When VGA became popular, there was a lot more competition in the hardware market, and you could eventually get good hardware for a decent price, and that is when 2D acceleration, large color palettes, etc. started happening. I'd say this was around 1990-1992 when things started getting interesting on DOS. Before that, I just stuck to my Amiga and C64. So any game that doesn't support true VGA modes, is going to be pretty horrible on DOS, unless it's an adventure or RPG game. There were a few exceptions, but that's the general rule. Commander Keen would be a good example of an action game running decently on EGA, but then that was id Software. (another greatest studio of all time) When Wolfenstein 3D hit, that was basically when the PC turned into a proper action gaming platform. Oh, side note, always check for setup.exe or config.exe etc. in the game folder on MSDOS games. Sometimes they don't support sound cards, or advanced graphics modes unless you set them up for it first. Not sure if Outrun supported Adlib, but FM sound would be far superior to PC Speaker. :D Second side note: While it's not Outrun-proper, and a bit silly as a modern racing game, my kids and I have played countless hours of Outrun 2006 on the PC. It plays a bit differently with all the drifting, but it has that same arcade speed and feel. Highly recommend it, even if it takes a little getting used to.
@TheRetroRaven2 жыл бұрын
PC/Tandy release doesn't support FM either - but on a real Tandy (or in DOSBox) it supports Tandy-3-voice, which sounds really nice, makes the game quite enjoyable compared to the unplayable mess that is the Amiga and Atari ports.

I don't usual comment but, dear God man, 20 systems, and over half of them are utter shite... go have a Guinness, mate... you've earned it! 😃

Very cool video! Thank you. Belive it or not but I still play it on my A500 even though it does suck... 😄 just wanted to mention that a demo of Outrun has been released on Atari Xe/Xl and it looks and sounds really good. Hopefully they will finish it. 8 bit Atari deserves a port of this classic. Cheers!

Quick question is the Sega Saturn version native code or a version of the cannonball engine as you didn't say and I no nothing about that machine?

Uh oh in the versions where ferrari logo is replaced with the other one, the logo changes directions when the car is turning. Nintendo switch for example.

This is on purpose as if you look at the original arcade version the horse changes

I had it on the C64 and was a nice little driving game. Compare it to the arcade and doesn’t look as good and people will hate it. Away from being an arcade conversion not too bad.

Yeah thats the perfect description of it on the c64, i loved it

You missed the sega ages 2500 vol 13 version on the playstation. Also there is an atari STE version that someone is working on but not sure that has been released. Didnt the master system have 2 versions? One of them for the 3d glasses

That's just emulating the arcade rom, so it's not a port per se

So fun on the gba! I am a big amstrad fan but for me the amstrad version is the worst of all. (Note: i don't understand the allusion on the fanboy of the amstrad .There fanboy on all community and i don't think that a c64 or a speccy fanboy is less annoying. Fanboy are the cancer of the retrogaming.) Very good vidéo and have a good day.😉

I find the music of the Genesis version very good in fact, I disagree with you on that one!. Besides, it includes an exclusive new track for the console which is really cool!

Thank God the Saturn Version is Number 1, it is my most played version 👍🏻

The Ferrari Logo on the car still flips when you turn left or right. You would think they would have sorted that out!

I had a pirated copy of Outrun for the ST. Absolute cack.

Good comparison. The Amiga had all the potential but they ruined it. I didn't know about that "flip trick", lame. 🤦🏻♂️
