This is actually one of my favorite episodes. I am Todd Bridge's age and remember watching this when it came out and have always lived in NC. My parents grew up in the 30's/40's. How the entire situation was depicted was perfection. It wasn't preachy and didn't take on a political narrative one way or the other. It was real; the way the Waltons would've really experienced it in the 1930's/40's and how Josh would've experienced it as well. The interplay between both experiences was pure genius. Though the love between the family and Josh was beautiful to see, the very painful decision to not adopt him at that point in time was one that was realistic for both the Waltons and Josh. It wasn't revisionist history trying to lecture others on what "should have happened", but a historically accurate portrayal of what a scenario at that time would've been like. It was beautifully done from start to finished in a way that (sadly) I don't think it would've been done today. I got to see my grandfather and my dad go through a transformation of their beliefs about race during the 70's/80's. Expecting people from the depression era to know then what we know now is arrogant and unfair. Approaching this issue as The Walton's did was invaluable and wise. Thank you for covering this episode.

*Judy, thank you for talking about this episode with Todd Bridges. The writers of this episode did a brilliant job and were extremely sensitive too. Todd payed his part really well. He went on to act in 'Different Strokes'. Sadly for a lot of child actors he also got caught up in drug use & life for him got a tad out of whack & spent time in prison but was acquitted. I hope he is now happy in his life. Child actors are now being protected as they cope with the fame, but also that their money is also protected for them too. Too many of the child actors succumbed to the drug/booze scene and died too young. But thankfully many also got help but still struggled until they finally got clean with help. Luckily all in the Waltons didn't get into that scene... and was pleased that Ralph Waite got sober too. 🙂nz*

Ralph Waite got an Emmy nomination for 'The Stray'. Also he got an Actor's Studio award for it. Great script by Kathleen Hite and wonderful direction by Harry Harris. In 'The Fire' episode the first season written my Earl Hamner they changed the ending. I have the original script. The Bascomb girl was supposed to live with Miss Hunter. Instead they contacted her real mother. In this episode it was the right thing for Josh to go with Verdie. Reading the book harked back to 'The Scholar' episode with Verdie. Later in the sixth season they did a recast of Josh. I wish they could have shown more of the relationship with Ralph Waite and Todd Bridges.

Judy, I was so anticipating your coverage of The Stray. Kathleen Hite's screenplay adds another Well-merited Emmy award to The Waltons. This is indeed a profound story that not only explores Segregation but also emphasizes the love & belonging that every child needs. This two-fold storyline was so powerful and relatable. I loved how eager and lovable Josh was despite his orphanage/background, and how easy it was for John and Olivia to love him despite his race. The exchange between Josh and John Walton at the bridge could not suppress tears. I grew up with a very loving Mom, but to have a Father anywhere near John Walton would make anyone cry (joyfully). Judy when doing episodes, I was on the impression you all were together and while you and the other children were in class on site they filmed different sections, I didn't realize one day this would be shot, then the next day this other scene would be shot, etc.. John has proven over and over you can be a man of GOD without going to a building to worship him and yes Jim Bob shows many aspects of someone seeing or thinking of things while some is trying to talk to him and Todd did do a great job playing this roll and I noticed the woman playing the roll of the foster care was the same woman that worked as an assistant teacher to Laura in Little House on the Prairie and worked in the kitchen with Laura's mother. There were so many scenes in the Walton's and it blows my mind how wonderful things were placed together and how the cast was more of a family than a cast. Hope I explained all this correctly.

The head of the orphanage is played by Ketty Lester who played one of my faves from Little House, Hester Sue.

I remember another episode in which Verdie gets really upset with Ike when he posts two separate lists, white and "colored," honoring local WWII casualties. Ike didn't mean anything by it, but she quite rightly called him out for what displaying separate lists implied. Even good men can have blind spots, and I hope that was a growth experience for Ike.

I really love this episode. Todd Bridges did an outstanding job as Josh. Also side note about this episode: Ketty Lester makes an appearance in this episode as the orphanage lady. She played Hester Sue Terhune for many years in Little House on the Prairie 👌🏻💕

I love that Hester Sue had a chance to be more featured on Little House. So much cross over between the shows and actors.

Something I thought about but that was never addressed on the show was the "adoption process" of Verdie and Harley adopting Josh into their family, and it made me wonder if this was considered an era in time where formal adoptions were less popular, and perhaps this was the norm amongst people who either lived in the country and didn't have access to cities and attorneys, or perhaps people who just could not afford adoption costs....I have seen every episode of this series, most of them over and over, and I don't remember ever seeing anything about Josh being formally adopted by Verdie and Harley.

This was a great rundown of a timely story. I recall most of it. At that time even I did not know the facts about the disconnect between races in this country because I saw none of it when I was growing up. Todd ridges did an excellent piece of work. Thanks, Judy.

Maybe having Jim Bob taking a bath in the same tub outside showing it wasn't prejudice. Instead of just Josh taking bath out there and not allowed to use the family tub.
