Starting in June of 2014, a family who recently moved into 657 Boulevard in Westfield, NJ began receiving letters from an anonymous individual calling themselves "The Watcher" and right away the family knew this person was not a welcoming neighbor, instead more like a threat to not only their safety but also a possible threat to the community. What followed was an investigation that spanned several years and few answers were ever given.

1. No security camera pisses me off, and I don't see why they would have denied putting them in if they weren't involved 2. The watcher lived in the neighborhood during his grandfather and father's time 3. The "hail the watcher letter" says they still live in the neighborhood. There can only be so many multi generational households in one neighborhood and lastly 4. The letters stopped when someone else moved in, so either they put in security cameras or the watcher gave up for some reason after being so brazen before. The family had to have some connection to him, I dont know what, but it makes absolutely no sense the letters only started and ended with them

@@chad999 This happens quite often, mostly using paranormal/haunted stories to drive attention from media, film and writers and cash in. It's hard to believe that there are folks like this, but that is reality. In this case I think it was mostly due to the regret that they had paid $1.35 million for the house and wanted a way to get that money back, so he (or they, who knows) sets up a scenario and uses that to sue the previous owners. That is just my theory.

To me, the letters come across as more comical than sinister. "Young blood"? "All hail the Watcher"? The Watcher is a "family tradition"? Those sound like they were written by a 15-year-old teenager who is trying way too hard to sound creepy. My theory is that it was nothing more than a group of neighborhood teenagers with way too much time on their hands. Also, why didn't the married couple put up video surveillance on the porch? That would have been a lot easier than some cockamamie scheme to send a bait letter to the neighbors.

That’s fucking ridiculous, how would some “neighborhood teenagers” be so incredibly organized in spying on the kids, and even better why the hell would they be spying on the children and parents. This is obviously not the work of something as simple as teenagers. The use of the words “young blood” is just as much evidence of a man secluded from society than teenagers. A man who (as he says) watches over a house all the time.

I have watched multiple versions of this story. One thing they all get across is "The Watcher" wasn't delivering the letters directly to their personal mailbox. All the people commenting on putting a camera up are missing the fact the letters are being dropped in a city box and then sent to the post office and then delivered. Not sure why this is so hard to comprehend.

I THINK IT'S THE MAILMAN. He said 657 Boulevard was his job and he goes by there several times a day. He obviously had access to the mailbox without looking suspicious and he would be able see and hear things most people wouldn't see from the street. Maybe he felt like pranking these people or maybe he actually had a connection to the house. The mailman should have been the first person the police looked at since the unmarked letters were with their mail.

I would have posted a billboard in my front yard with his letters enlarged, and then openly mocked, critiqued, and taunted The Watcher. I'd pretty much make every single point most of the other comments have made, called them out for being trite, poorly written, and using a written format and delivery method that would have (should have) easily gotten them caught on their second attempt. It's clearly the work of a manchild. It's so forced and over the top. And yeah, not setting up cameras immediately is a sign of total bullshit. Even if it was 1970 you could have set up a camera. If this story is actually real, I'm amazed at the sheer level of incompetence on part of every single adult remotely connected to this. This should essentially be impossible, because someone, *anyone* in the neighborhood could have made a camera setup happen.

I grew up in this town. I left before the Watcher stuff happened. My parents sold their home a year before these people bought 657 Blvd. Considering the town, there are a lot of eccentric wealthy people. Everyone keeps accusing the family, but honestly, I don't think they did. They sold it at a loss. The movie deal that happened came years later and there was never a guarantee. They struggled to find a renter and the renter got a Watcher letter immediately. I mean, if they were going to do this, why do it in a place with a house worth a over million dollars and $20,000+ taxes? Why not do it in Pennsylvania or New York? Like I don't think people understand that the movie deal still didn't cover the cost of the house plus the annual taxes for every year they owned that home. This would have been a terrible way to make money. They'd have made more money doing renovations and selling the home in the same time frame.

Finally, someone with the same idea as me. Personally, I think it was Peggy who was the Watcher. I mean, think about it. DNA evidence suggests it was a woman writting the letters and, based on the content of the letters, the Watcher is a person who has lived in the house itself with her father in the 1960s as a child. So, if the Watcher was a little girl or young teenager in the 60s, she'd be an old woman in 2014. Her husband was clearly a suspect, so I really don't understand why there's never any mention of the wife. Basically, they should have checked if Peggy fits any of the final two identifying criteria. She fits the age and the gender criteria, she fits the close neighbour criteria. The only criteria that are not confirmed are her living in the house (which could be looked up) and her father passing away recently (probably in 2014, when the letters started, since the Watcher mentions that the torch has been passed). So, what I think happened was that her father had to sell the house, but was heartbroken and became completely obsessed with it, watching it bitterly and knowing it couldn't be his. This bitterness was felt by Peggy as she likely noticed her father's distress, so she became bitter as well. They both probably wanted to preserve what the house looked like in the 60s (which is supported by what the Watcher claimed), so when Peggy noticed the renovations this new family was making, she decided to mess with their minds. On top of that, the (potentially) recent loss of her father could have contributed to this outburst of hate.

@@dustingaethje1332 This is my 3rd or 4th time coming back to this mystery for listening to before bed and I gotta agree with you. I felt like Derek had it right that it was someone in the neighbors house and hell maybe the comment of Michael being a recluse was to cover up her writing the letters and not have her family be under investigation anymore. And who knows, maybe the town was so bad at keeping files that there's not many documents on it. The only other theory I could agree with is maybe the faked it all of it for being famous one. And that one is also loaded with evidence for it, the fact that there was one other letter before they moved in and the fact they denied setting up cameras to catch the Watcher in the act when it was really them doing it to be famous.

This story doesn’t get less creepy the more times I hear it. But honestly? I would’ve taken on the burden if I could’ve afforded it, lol. Of course, I have a few creative ideas on how to handle it, but also I’m not a bearer of Young Blood, being nearly 30 and child-free. I wouldn’t have minded as much, I don’t think, because I don’t have kids. Because I don’t have people to protect like that. Would’ve absolutely wanted to help that family, though... ...which brings me to why the cops didn’t do much. I’d have set up surveillance under the guise of “more renovations” (by using a renovation truck and maybe changing/repairing the trim on the outside of the house while installing small cameras covertly within it or something, I’m sure the cops/PI could figure something out, especially if the family had money to contribute to the process). I’d have maybe “fixed” or “spruced up” the mailbox (another ploy) and figured out some way to monitor it in the process. Maybe even leaving a message for the Watcher in or on the box to see if they can’t set up a meeting/draw the Watcher out? This is a case of harassment/stalking from what I can tell, so... I’m not legally versed in what’s allowed in terms of catching a harasser/stalker, but I would think there’s a little more that at LEAST the PI could have done if not the actual cops. Fun fact, had the cops installed surveillance, it would 100% out the family if they were responsible. Also, if they fought against the surveillance, that could be damning too. I’m also wondering how the new resident of 657 is faring!!

this smells fishy to me. i don't think the family behind it as they gain nothing but they were so passive in their reaction. no cameras, no scanning for bugs, no trap in the mailbox, no guard hired, no security systems installed, the house was not searched properly for hiding spots. it's either they are the least creative people in the world or the video missing a lot of details but judging by your other work i highly doubt the last part.

I think someone is literally living inside the walls, there have been lots and lots of stories like that, this one seems like one of those stories. So either the one sending the letters live inside the walls, or the watcher know that someone lives inside the walls.

Also why is nobody talking about the tunnel underneath the house that has a room underground, someone is definitely living there and I think it’s the watcher. I think the watcher is underneath the house writing the letters to scare them off because they want the house, I think it’s definitely got something to do with the neighbour’s where the tunnel leads to. Something fishy is definitely going on inside the basement walls.

As others have mentioned, the family does not seem to know how to think outside the box. There were so many things they could had done to catch the Watcher. 1) There are one drop mailbox or lockable mailbox that have been around for more than 40 years. These are mailbox that can be opened once for the postman to put letters into the mailbox and it automatically locks when closed. The owner has a key to unlock and reset it for the next delivery. Using this and a security cam, the Watcher would had been caught with the next letter. 2) Why didn't they get a dog - a big vicious angry dog? 3) Why didn't the police get a K-9 unit to sniff the letters and then go from house to house in the neighborhood? Even the police seem more incompetent than usual for N.J. PD. Fingerprints, DNA, and even watermarks on the letter and envelope would generated a list of possible suspects. 4) Applying something as simple as a phosphors compounds on the handle of the mailbox door would had enable the police to located the Watch by shining a blacklight on a suspect's hands because the phosphors compound would glow under blacklight.

I agree with everything except for #2- kids around vicious dogs would do more harm than good. As a kid that grew up with dogs, the ones that I interacted with when I was young were extremely patient. Ear pulling, pets being too aggressive, constant attention- all of that would be enough for a dog with a difficult personality to train to bite the kids. There are so many ways they could have protected the mailbox though, and there should've been some sort of surveillance around the house.

I mean just think about it, he doesn't have to worry about going to the man's house, he can just pass threw and leave the man's mails and his note at the same time. The cops wouldn't question him a bit. AND because he has equipment to see from a far, he doesn't have to worry about that either, he could be living 3 streets away if all we know. Heard about this one in a different video awhile back, and my first inclination was that it was someone who loves the house, maybe really wanted the house and lost it to the Broaddus family. Maybe even someone from a family that grew up in that house. (This was a personal interpretation, as someone who still loves the house he grew up in and kind of still hates that it belongs to anyone else.) But now, I'm wondering if it was a gambit from the Broaddus' themselves to see if they could raise the value on the property by turning it into their own Amityville. If the city turned down the reconstruction efforts despite the property meeting the criteria, it might mean they had their own doubts about the family.

I have a theory about the Watcher and how he did what he did. Now i think you have to read the letters closely and I believe the watcher gives little clues to how he can be discovered yet all the people are so worried about being watched not how to bring their attacker to justice. The line "do you know what's hidden in the walls" that could be a major giveaway he could have little voice recorders in the walls in each room and hallways maybe even some little cameras in their, or they live close and just look through the windows with binoculars they even said "binoculars are useful" in a letter this gives a clear explanation how he knew their nicknames how many children their are who sleeps in which room and other personal information. What do I have to confirm this possibility most neighborhoods in a wealthy area like that would have cameras all over the place and certainly one would easily pick up some guy pepping through a window and climbing up the balcony, if the watcher did that he's just asking to get arrested so yeah. Also what caused his aggression was when they renovated the house the watcher obviously loves the house the way it was built and believes that's how the house should stay the previous owners didn't renovate thus not causing the watcher to get angry what are your thoughts???

The only clues I got from the letters were: 1. The person's family had a grandfather and father who were present. 2. The grandfather was involved with the property in the 20's and the father was involved with the house in the 60's. 3. Additionally, he/she admits to being in the house during the 60's. Probably because the father took them there. 4. The person's father died during the 90's. If it's not the owners themselves, then it would have to be someone walking by the house several times a day or neighbors with tunnel access to the interior of the house that match that background: people who did work on the house decades prior and were acquainted enough with the owners to take their children to play there while they worked.

Did the previous family not receive any letters? if they did then they could have gotten in trouble for not disclosing it, but aside from that, I find it so weird that many people are so sure it was faked. Like, imagine emotionally torturing your family and hurting yourself financially over what? some drama? a slight possibility of a movie deal? if someone from the family did this they must have had an endgame in mind but there doesn't seem to be one here, as they said themselves that there was no closure. I don't know, but I think I'd rather believe that it was someone from outside the family with a bad delusion or wanting to terrorise some people.

It was interesting to me because it could go either way. There are a lot of arguments that could lean in both directions and truthfully I don’t believe the dad was behind this, for the main reason of putting his family through it

It wasn’t them. The bought it for 1 million dollars and put even more into it and only sold it for 400,000. Everyone saying they did it for the money, what money did they get ? They lost more money buying the house

I wonder if The Watcher is a squatter? It isn't unheard of for people to secretly live in attics or crawlspaces, especially in an empty house.
