Apparently the clip of DK escaping prision and immediately beating the shit out of Funky Kong is a super abridged parody of The Count of Monte Cristo. Now that I think about it, given the name "Donkey Kong TV" and the strange footage, I feel like a lot of these skits might be actual film parodies.

It kind of was like a lot of kids shows like dktv in france back then. These sketchs was between cartoons episodes. And during this show a lot of differents cartoons was diffused. In France during the 90’ every channel had this kind of show Where they diffused cartoon épisode and made sketch like this one between cartoons.

Hello! Frenchman here. DK TV has been enjoying a sort of resurgence because a famous French YTber has brought it back up in the past few years, so this is quite the timing for this video to release. It's got a very 90s French sense of humour, with the pastiches and the black comedy that was a lot more accepted for youth programmes back there. I didn't know the show (I was too young), but it's similar in tone to other programmes from the era. Yes, that's just how French public TV was. DKTV was broadcast on national TV, yes. I don't doubt, if I watched some of the show, I'd recognize pop culture references that have aged like milk. I guess I gotta translate that stuff now, woops (that Funky Kong joke about women at the wheel is also, somehow, a common stereotype and unfunny joke I've seen made a thousand times. that totally sounds sane and not bad at all for my country)

In regards to the zombie Kong skit, that type of crude humor wasn't off brand for Nintendo, at least at the time. For example: Wario Land 2 has Zombie Wario as a powerup, and his undead body falls apart if he falls down from too high of a height.

The second bit Carlito talked about with Donkey Kong punching the shit out of Funky Kong is a parody of the Count of Monte Cristo! I don't remember all of the details but I read a simplified version of the story in French classes. If I remember correctly, the Count (don't know his actual name) is imprisoned for political treason, which he was falsely accused of. He then manages to break out of prison and become the Count of Monte Cristo, and get revenge on the people who wrongfully imprisoned him - which, I guess in this case was probably Funky Kong? I wish my French was good enough that I could translate these, but I can only understand bits and pieces. Maybe someday...

Wow lots of stuff to say about all this: - DKC was really popular in France because it was one the first CG show ever there and the novelty alone made it remarkable, somewhat like ReBoot and Beast Wars for american audiences. CG puppets in general were huge in France being the hosts of several shows, maybe the most popular being Le Bigdil. Imagine having a cartoon character of the shiny post-Toy Story CG future talk to you in real time, this was jaw dropping. - For the DKTV stuff it's really in line with what all kid blocks were doing at the time: low budget improvised skits that the hosts had to pump up daily to retain attention of the viewers between the actual shows. Club Dorothee and Minikeum are the most famous there, and both of them and DKTV just aged like milk, not even in a corny way. I unironically loved that as a kid and it's the most cringe inducing thing you can play to torture me now. That was also reminiscent of the other popular method where they reused footage of the actual cartoons to do the skits with new lines by the real French voice actors (like Cartoon Cartoon and WB Kids in the US) except this time they had direct access to the mocap suit to make their own footage. I still have a lot of nostalgia for Ça Cartoon which was the Looney Tunes block and looked like Roger Rabbit for my young impressionable mind. - For the French jokes, the prison stuff is a parody of the Count of Monte-Christo but it's turned into a pun with Monte-Costaud (meaning "strong") and he just beat the crap out of the bad guy instead. The flashes show famous programs and show hosts from the same channel but I lack context. For the fake drink ad it might be a spoof of an actual commercial I'm not sure, but in the end it is another pun between Badoit and Bats-toi ("fight back") so that's why they're so aggressive. Also the Toy Story parody is literally called Knock-off Story so it is somewhat self-aware.

I'm so glad someone is finally covering this strange piece of DK Media! I've been fascinated by it ever since like last year or so, It's just so weird and interesting. I always felt bummed that it was too obscure, but now that you made this video... I see a bright future for the DKTV community going forward! This reminds me of my friend's parody of Saturday Night Live with Sonic characters. "Sonic Night Live." It's of the first five seasons. You know that "Sonic, Sonic" song you may've heard on the Web? ("It's Friday night on my new Wii") That's actually from a song from Season 2 of SNL, about Chevy Chase. It got parodied in 2008 to be about Sonic, and Danny found it and the rest is history.

DkC the show was impressive for its time since they were the first show on TV to use motion capture, a technology which would be used for movies like the polar express which looked photorealistic for its tim, so live action footage with motion capture looked fine in its time

In fact, this show wasn't targeting children. The supposed audience was teenagers and young adults, kinda like MTV in the US (I think, I'm not american). Hence the weird psychedelic scenes and dark humor. It's funny to see that this thing seems obscure for people abroad, whereas in France it is one of the most famous teen shows of the 90s. Yer right on the mocap part. The usage of mocap in animation goes as far back as 1994, when Sega AM2 used it to capture animation for Virtua Fighter 2, to really get the best and most realistic presentation for each character's moves. Namco started to use said technique with Soul Edge and Tekken 3 as well, by 1995 and 96, respectively. In animation for cartoons, I dunno. I know there was the poorly animated MK VHS cartoon that used badly mocapped 3D and for CG, Reboot came out in 1994, being the first fully CG cartoon to be full length and Toy Story revolutionized the form in 95. The first fully mocapped CG shows or cartoons are somn I have no memory of, but the DKC cartoon deserves a note for being one of the first of its kind

I actually saw an episode of this many years ago when my family had a vacation in Paris. I thought it was so cool that france hade a DK show, so when I later found out about the DKC show I thought it looked simhilair and thought they were the same, but nope, DKTV. XD I recall the episode had a skit where Krusha was tagging along in a car ride, but they couldnt bring him out of the car fooooor reasoooons???? When they returned, the car had gotten so hot inside he was boiling red. I guess it was a jab at people leaving their dogs in the car without properly ventilating it.
