I love how this scene shows how much Gary values these moments with his friends. He's willing do anything to stop them seeing the tag on his wrist because he doesn't want the "good times" with his friends to end and he knows there is no way they would do this if they knew what kind of state he's in.

No, it's suicide. You don't get put in hospital for cutting unless you've gone so far with it that it's effectively suicide anyway. Hence the opening, where he's in therapy. His tag even says "Psych 1". The bandages come right down to his hands. Wrist cutting.

That's led up to throughout the entire film, Gary was revealed by Oliver to have refused to swim (which Oliver claims to be because of his Sisters of Mercy tattoo, but this is ofc because of his arms), as well as him being shown (especially during the Crossed Hands scene) to have thumb holes cut into the sides of his trenchcoat, something often done by cutters to prevent their sleeves going beyond their wrists and revealing their forearms.

Gary's desperation here is amazing, had they found out about his wrists now it would have been a very different story. It's also amazing that Gary didn't take off his hospital bracelet, I think unconsciously hr wanted to be found out and saved but lost hope over the course of the night, ie a few minutes after this scene he says ' we'll get there if it kills us' with tears in his eyes - so sad especially considering he brought no luggage - he was ending up here dead or alive . I do wonder how this would’ve turned out if they did find out in this scene I think Gary would’ve at first tried to keep a brave face and keep up his positive happy charade but then just have a complete meltdown like he did when Andy finds out later in the film, I think Andy would start to calm down as he puts the pieces together on why Gary did all of this in the first place, dunno how Steven would react but I think Peter wouldn’t have any idea what was going on as at this point in the movie he’s too out of it. Then I think Gary would just run off not wanting any of their sympathy or their help and go to complete The Golden Mile on his own
