Many have stated the line “They told me when to go to bed!” is so heartbreaking and I agree that Simon Pegg nails the delivery. But to me his brilliance is when he talks about how his life never got better after that night, and how he’s sobbing when he talks about how he felt like he could take on the world…..and then his voice hardens when he says “It was a big lie.” He goes from crying and self pity to anger in that one line, from feeling sorry for himself to pissed off and you can see his resolve to finish his task. Maybe I’m reading into it a bit, but to me it’s one of the best parts of the movie.

It’s also true, things change after high school. Life isn’t as simple anymore and you have responsibilities. You can’t just coast through life like you could back then. You need to make money either by finding a job that pays or going to college to get a degree that’ll hopefully get you a job that pays. Gary never got used to life after high school and eventually burned out.

In all the praise for Simon Pegg, everyone seems to be forgetting Nick Frost. In the past two movies, he was the immature, no-future, bumbling character, but in this he plays the straight man ridiculously well.

I've had friends in his position. That cared but had their own lives to live. Always looking in, wanting me to turn things around knowing that what I was doing was unhealthy, but powerless to stop me from making reckless and harmful decisions. Eventually, a good friend gets mad. Like you're watching your favorite character in a horror movie walk into the basement to investigate that bump in the middle of the night. They can't help but tell "What are you doing? Are you trying to kill yourself?! Stop!" but still feeling trapped as a bystander. Sometimes you need someone you love to be upset with you. Sometimes you need a close friend to be angry. This was a short clip. It was funny, and it never let the seriousness of the situation take away from the fun of the movie. But it was also very real for me and reminded me of the nuances of a real friend. Which isn't always someone who's down to party. A real friend will know your inner demons and fight them aggressively to see you through to the end of the tunnel. Sorry for the wall of text but for everyone out there struggling with addiction it's possible to find people who love and care about you and if you don't have that then know that they're out there somewhere. Take care of yourself everybody. Alcohol and drugs can be a lot of fun but they can also be a great burden both on yourself and those closest to you.

The sad thing for me is that the only friends I ever really had were from school. I was the only one in my group who didn’t go to university, went straight into work. So I’m just doing my own thing earning money while the rest of my friends are going out every night, meeting new people, making new friends. I used to text them all every summer asking if they wanted to meet up and none of them ever replied. I don’t even make an effort anymore. Only friends I’ve really got are my cousins that I go out drinking with every now and then. Sad innit? Some days I really wish I could go back to my school days

This is definitely the smartest of the 3 films: the others had conflicts that didn't have real significance, but in this, robots taking over the world is the perfect external manifestation of Gary's internal conflict: the world's been changing and growing up around him while he stays the same.
@Red_Beard2798
@Red_Beard2798 5 жыл бұрын
Now that you mention robots instead of the typical "blanks", I've just thought that they're also a metaphor with how Gary sees everyone else in the world. Like he says in the pub where they first encounter the blanks, "You're all slaves, and I'm free to do whatever I want, any old time!". Gary sees himself as a free man while the rest of the world conform to society's standards, which is also why The Network eventually just gives up on trying to convince Gary to join them; The Network represents order and stability and Gary is just sheer chaos that The Network can't nor could they ever correct

Well, I think that the 3 movies had the same structure: People that are trapped in a repetitive way of life, that are forced to face problems that makes them to emotionally grow up. - In Shawn of the Dead, Shawns life is going nowhere, unable to stand up for himself. After the events of the film, he is able to cut ties with his past ( his mom and his friend) and regain the control over his life. - In Hot Fuzz, Simon plays the role of a somehow cold police officer, who seems to show a lack of empathy. However, as the movie progressed, we are shown than despite of his behaviour, he still is a good person. The total opposite of the villains, that show themselves as kind and compassionate people but they are nothing more but ruthless sociopaths.

"That night [...] was supposed to be the beginning of my whole life. All that promise and optimism? That feeling that we could take on the whole universe? _It was a _*_BIG LIE_* ." What I considered really sad about that scene: The movie told us long ago that Gary got stuck in his youth, did not get into life, and lives in memory of happier days. That was not unexpected...yet, he always put on a more or less happy face, had drive, ambition, and wanted to (and the others) "have a good time". When Gary said "It's all I've got", it's kind hearbreaking when he is so down that he even does not have the energy to lie to himself any more, to make himself (or others) believe his life was worth living. It was not a big relevation, not some kind of optimistic "Aaaaah..THAT went wrong with my life. Now that I know it, I can work on improving my situation" moment. It was just hopeless surrender....

I went to see this movie to have fun like I did with Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. This movie fucked me up. This scene right here broke me down harder than any other movie other than I am Legend and the damn dog. Yeah I was tearing up in the theater. I love Pegg and Frost they are great actors. Something about seeing Simon Pegg in tears talking about attempted suicide and way his life had derailed just gutted me. I think it's the tone, the way they delivered the lines. Will Smith begging a Manikin to say hello to him while on the verge of tears did the same thing to me. Fuck man only two times That's ever happened to me with a movie.

It hit me hard too man. I think it was because I was like Gary at that point in my life, I dressed almost exactly the same way he was in the film (still do) and I had just turned 18. I had realised that everything people had promised me about life begging when you left school was a "big lie" and that no matter how high your grades are some people just aren't willing to give you a chance. So I was unemployed, depressed and turned to drink. Seeing this film made me laugh but it also made me see drinking was never the answer, especially this scene.

The sad thing is that the world is full of Gary Kings; People who's lives get progressively worse with age , struggling to recapture just a moment of youthful glory and happiness. When we are young we all think we have the rest of our lives ahead of us - our own journeys that have already been laid out for us so we don't have a care in the world, no pressure, no feelings of inadequacy or failure. I see a lot of people claiming that Gary being suicidal came as a surprise, but in reality, the subtle clues were laid on throughout the movie. First of all, when Gary gets to the station to take the other guys to newton haven, we get to see that, unlike his friends, he never brought any luggage with him. This is confirmed, when the guys are all walking towards the B&B, Gary is bringing no luggage in with him, implying that he never intended on coming back to London. (Also, even if he was suicidal, people with depression are often un-motivated, and therefor might not bother changing clothes anyway) Second, when peter is Discussing Shane Hawkins (Peter’s childhood bully), peter says that he’d “rather not bring it all up again if that’s ok”, to which Gary responds “Hey, now listen Pete, bottling up past trauma can lead to inadequate coping strategies in later life... or so I’ve heard”. This heavily hints towards Gary’s therapist giving the same, or at least similar advice. Gary’s “inadequate coping strategy’s” are most likely self harming/self mutilation, as is hinted to in my next point. (Although these coping strategies could also be drug use, as Steve tells Gary earlier on in the film “you sold my guitar to buy drugs”) Thirdly, the most obvious clue, the scene in the worlds end (the pub) between Gary and Andy. Andy lifts up Gary’s sleeve to reveal his bandaged arms, and a medical tag. This implys that Gary is at least in some sort of treatment program for his aforementioned self-harm issues, which explains why Gary refuses to show his arms earlier on in the film, as he is embarrassed by his scars. It is more likely, however, that Gary has actually been sectioned in a medical ward. This is of course only speculation but there are some subtle clues left in the movie that might hint towards this. For a start, in the opening scene when Gary is getting dressed, we get to see his room, in which all of his toiletries (toothbrush etc) are kept IN his room, however, if he was living in an apartment/house, he would most likely keep them in the bathroom, for obvious reasons. But if he is staying in a medical ward, he might not have a personal bathroom to keep all his stuff in, and instead would have to keep his toiletries in his bedroom. Next, (and I know this is not concrete evidence), Gary has began to grow stubble on his face. Bearing in mind how insistent he was on coming in the exact same outfit, mode of transport etc when returning to newton haven, it seems a little odd that he hasn’t bothered shaving, especially considering the fact he refuses to accept that he is getting old, and a beard is a pretty clear indication of aging. A possible reason for this, is that he’s not allowed to have a shaving razor in the medical ward, as he could take the blades out of it to use as a tool for self-harm, which subsequently means he hasn’t had the opportunity to shave recently (this would also indicate that he was only sectioned recently, as his stubble hasn’t grown very much) Also, concerning the medical tag, your probably wondering why he didn’t just cut it off if he didn’t want the other guys to find out about his issues, but in actual fact, he probably left it on so that it was easier for his friends and family know why he killed himself, and that it wasn’t their fault. Of course we know Gary never ends up going through with his planned suicide, which is why it’s still on his wrist at the end of the movie. Finally, when Gary is sitting on the hill, looking at the exploded newton haven, he realised that he only came back to the town to end his own life, but in turn, and in part due to his selfishness, has ended up ruining the planet, and dragging everyone else down with him, just as he had dragged all his friends down with him earlier on in his life. This may also explain why he didn’t stay with the guys at the end of the film, and instead went off to find the younger, blank versions of his friends, because he feels an immense guilt about essentially destroying his best friends lives forever. Although, in fairness, they most likely only split up to find each other’s individual family/loved ones. I love Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, but The Worlds End is just so clever, and so subtle, it’s absolute cinema gold and immensely underrated, due to (in my opinion) its slight decrease in comedy compared to the other 2 films. Hopefully you can spot some of these clues during your next rewatch of the Film.

In the opening if you look closely, the walls of the room he's in aren't painted and it looks like a small cell. That would imply that his room isn't an apartment or a small section of a house. I love this moment because Gary did get help, he wants to live but therapy, like the changes imposed by the network, are hollow in a life without relationships and a worth you make for yourself. The ending is so fantastic because there are two sides : though Gary is no longer actively suicidal, he is still risking his life and the lives of those who depend on him got his own grandeur from one perspective. While he also has become the hero he always was meant to be by creating a more honest world, on other other hand. In taking on the blanks he surrounds himself with the Empty vessels he needs for his own narrative, using their complete dependence in him for his own ego but is also potentially finally acting in the interest of others and protecting them because he was the reason they were created and then abandoned. Is he better, just needing a purpose, a kingdom to become his true self or has he just change the face of his addiction and damned the world to justify himself? Great film.

This scene is beyond powerful. Gary King had to go through a scifi adventure from hell to get broken down enough to finally get honest with someone about what was really going on inside him, to talk about what he was really afraid of, he was scared of growing up and was willing to drink himself silly to avoid facing the reality that he let his life slip away cause he could never let go of that time in his youth where it was ok for him to do nothing but party. He found out that night that his life never started cause he never grew up, he only got older. Such a deep and tragic story, one of the bests, Gary "it never got better than that night" King.

Gary ended up wasting his life and Andy ended up losing his family despite simply trying to provide for them and losing what precious time he had left in the day with his wife children

This scene might be one of the saddest that Wright has ever directed. We see Gary at the beginning of the movie in that support group and naturally assume that it's for alcoholism. Given the fact that the whole prologue of the movie is about the Golden Mile pub crawl. But then we see not just his hospital wrist band, but also the bandages around his arms revealing that his been cutting his wrists. It was a support group for the suicidal. Not alcoholics. And the way he reacts during this whole scene and how desperate he is to complete the crawl. He'd planned out his next suicide attempt already...but wanted to relive the best moment of his life before he killed himself. And that was doing the Golden Mile again. Only this time he would COMPLETE it before he meet his own end. Truly brilliant...and truly tragic.

The saddest thing to me is that, the Golden Mile is all Gary has left so when he finished it, he would have absolutely nothing. He was never planning on going home. He just wanted to do the one thing he felt would give his life a shred of meaning. Pushing 40, he had convinced himself that all he could do was still live life like a teenager but after hospitalization and thinking that it wasn't going to help him, he resolved himself to go out with a bang and a good time. Gary had given up on everything, his friends, his family, any hope of life getting better. Which is why he couldn't give up on the Golden Mile. It truly was the only thing he had now That is what makes the desperation in his voice when he says "Its all I've got" so heartbreaking

There's so much symbolism in this movie, especially relating to King Arthur and the Knights. Gary is literally the 'King;' in the beginning, he desires that once and future emblem, he wants to be forever young and mythical, to be remembered alongside the magic and the glory. He has nothing left, but the one mission he never completed- Camlann, if you like. Once he defeats the Golden Mile, he intends to destroy himself, but in reality, when he does, he ends up destroying the entire world. In that way, he truly is 'Gary, King of the Humans.' The world is reliant on him, and it fractures when he breaks. He can no longer live in the world around him, so he destroys it and builds a new one. The problem is that he takes everyone else down with him. But again, that relates to his friends being his loyal Knights of the Round Table, they follow him right to the end or die trying. And in the end, he reigns again.

Gary’s bandages on his wrists now explain why he didn’t show his arms to the group previously in the film.

I love how this explains the scene earlier where Gary refused to show his elbow, at the time it left the audience to assume that he wouldn’t because he was ashamed of the accident, but really it’s because if he didn’t his friends would’ve found out he tried killing himself.

This scene shows how much deep and mature this movie is despite the parody and funny scenes. We cant live in the past, we have to grow up and go on.

This bit depressed the hell out of me when I first watched it in cinemas; really hit home, & had me sat there in a slump for the rest of the night “It never got better than that night.”

1:44 That shot of Gary’s bandaged arm gives me chills. He wasn’t just an alcoholic, he was also just depressed and downright suicidal (or at least big self harmer).

This is the reason why The World's End is my favorite of the trilogy. Maybe it's not as well paced as the other two movies but the character work in this one is so great, Gary is such a tragic character.

you know what, Gary King is a great character, I think he just resembles what it is like to want to hold onto ur youth and the struggles of having a form of addiction

This was by far the most meaningful and relatable of the trilogy. While still being packed with as much comedy and quirk as the other two. It’s not a film about aliens, but one about soul crushing regret. Hell, it even makes me wish I could see the picture where Gary doesn’t abandon Andy on that night, moves on with his life and meets them on way better terms. That would be a real boring movie, but it speaks to how robustly developed Gary’s character is.

Its really amazing how this movie combines a ridiculously cheesy alien invasion storyline with a deeply tragic and adult one, and it somehow works.

This gem of a film..... Shaun of the dead was Rocky Horror of the Cornetto Trilogy - beloved and cherished more so overtime Hot Fuzz was the Die Hard of the Cornetto Trilogy Loved as an Intelligent action classic from the get go The World's End is Definately the Fight Club of the Cornetto Trilogy Not understood for its time only to be BELOVED and admired for its astonishing foreshadowing and commentary and dialogue All three are amazing Hot Fuzz was the most fun and successful Shaun of the Dead is the biggest cult classic and revered The worlds end is the most ever growing and relevant as well as intellectual and recognised in hindsight

1:20 Exactly, you fight for what's important." "What is so important about the Golden Mile?" "IT'S ALL I'VE GOT!" Jesus that delivery tears me apart. A final irrefutable acknowledgement that out of a life filled with failures, that is the only success he has within his grasp. Cuts me deep. Just like at 2:14 "It never got better than that night. That was supposed to be the beginning of my life. All that promise and f**king optamism. That feeling like we could take on the whole universe. It was a big lie." Cuts deep. I've never heard the message about tapping into your full potential, and doing your best to make your life something worth living more eliquently put than this. Such an amazing delivery, and an important message to today's youth. This is why I love Simon's work.

the most heartbreaking thing about this film is that gary's problems are only solved by an outlandish apocalyptic event reforging the world into one in which he belongs. In the real world, people like Gary generally just drink themselves to death

I do not understand why this film in the Cornetto trilogy is as underappreciated as it is. This scene alone packs so many punches and is impossible to watch without getting emotional.
