Its also interesting how they are like this evidence then after say its inconclusive. When i look at the evidence shown in the video it doesnt seem like it was quite that condeming. The only "proof" is the radar that doesnt seem unusual it just looks like they moved the character and the radar acurately responded. And even if they did splice a part. Its stated he spliced put him hitting the load checkpoint button which seems pretty logical. For the part he did u needed to load checkpoint. That's really the only factual evidence provided"according to what was said in the video". In the video someone claims x or y but no hard evidence.

Probably a rock and a hard place problem. He would likely think if he took too long publicly he could say it was just too much and he didn't practice enough (the route he took, clearly). On the other hand if he just didn't take part at all in this event he might let some people down and just the fact that he wouldn't participate could raise some red flags that would be harder to explain or be less understandable.

I remember the name "Cody Miller" in the 2008 Gamer World Records, got it at the scholastic book fair at school around the time. Halo 3 was super popular during this time since the game had been out for almost a year at that point, so I immediately went to the Halo section of that book and saw his name! Crazy that he turned out out be a cheater all these years later

For a glitch that supposedly only happens 1/100 times I'm surprised no one else challenged this, for speed runners that kind of chance seems really generous especially compared to other stats that are so unforgiving it's almost not worth using

Yeah a 1% rate of success would make individual level runs pretty bad. For full game runs when it's on the last level it's virtually unusable.

@@dstreetz91 I mean there's other runners that play for hundreds of chances, to me a 1/100 doesn't seem so bad if you immediately retry to see if a trick is possible and in this specific case this trick is impossible so I'm assuming a different speed runner could easily spot if it's fake, especially if more than one try it on the same spot. If I was familiar with a game and I had a 1/100 change to pull of a never before seen trick I'd take it

My memory is horrible these days so I don't remember this guy but some of my favorite memories are learning the different speed running routes and tricks with people like The Tyrant, Naked Eli and RC master, I still remember discovering a trick to make the tip of the spear laso easier and submitting the footage to RC only to find out he had just come up with a better one ! I didn't even know this Twin Galaxies challenge existed. Back in 2004/2005 i completed about 90% of Halo 2 Legendary with 0 deaths, all enemies cleared, no cheats, no sections skips. So it was not a speedrun, but it was a proper deathless run. Only mission i did not complete was Regret, i was very close just needed to grab his chair and punch him one more time but his guards got me as i boarded the chair.

I used to casually do some speedruns and had a few records on highspeedhalo. I remember watching the GDQ with Cody Miller. I didn't think he was cheating, I just figured he was kind of a mediocre player that only had records because he was able to pull off the tricks which were too hard to pull off reliably to stream. And since he was representing the community just assumed everyone was like that and kind of lost all the respect for the Halo speedrun community But after I saw Goatrope at GDQ he earned all the lost respect back. The skill and knowledge he showed was amazing. I'm glad you included the nice socks comment at Cody's GDQ, it was the best part about that entire "speedrun".

I teared up a little when seeing what Bungie sent GoatRope. Honestly, the amount of love from all parties have for each other is breathtaking. All these people at Bungie poured their hearts, minds, and time into making a beautiful game; the visuals, the story, the music, the coding, all of it coming together in a narrative that will stand the test of time. Then the players, who love the game and spend many, many hours enjoying the creation of such a wonderful world. Then on TOP of ALL of that, the love Bungie had for it's players, going outside the listed rewards and sending him a sealed game and a shirt for his efforts... it's honestly beautiful how much of a positive effect video games had on the world, or at least the communities that loved these titles. It's our generation's method of storytelling, and I will always be so thankful to have lived in that time period where I would wake up on a Saturday morning and grind out Halo 1 on Legendary with my brother on the couch, when we were barely 8-10 years old.

Speedrunning really has a come way. Hearing 13:30 describe "Halo 2 Legendary Deathless" for $150 as an impossible task and only a few days ago we get $20,000 to a man who finished Halo 2, All Skulls but Envy, Legendary, no deaths and is now practicing for the exact same thing + no shooting

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the video and the history. Also thanks for all the primers on speed runs. For any average HALO fan who hasn't done any speed-running, I'd recommend at least learn some of the tricks and out of map experiences involved -- they are fun and fascinating. I'm no speed-run star, but once I managed to slide through the door and smake that elite in the back on the silent cartographer, it was a fantastic feeling. The hammer skip in Reach was also a highlight. Sadly, I never managed to get the infamous cliff jump just right (though I got close), but ended up with all the time based achievements in all the games and had a lot of fun. The hammer skip in Cortana was probably one of the most frustrating ordeals in my entire life that I have only succeeded on once, but HALO Reach, already my favorite game at the time became even more fun not only from the speed-run stuff you share but also the achievement guides like finishing the jet-pack level without a jet-pack... WOW that took a while but what a sense of accomplishment. Thanks, again for your work sharing enough info for novices to dip our toes in the speed-run pool and get some of those rarer achievements.

I don't know if anybody would be interested in a wholesome Halo 2 story, but... I was sophomore in college when Halo 2 released (because I'm an internet dinosaur). Spring semester that year I took a class called "Philosophy of Videogames" as one of my electives because it sounded interesting. The class was taught by this really cool young (early 30s at the ABSOLUTE oldest, more likely late 20s) woman who was obviously familiar with videogames, but she wasn't as well-versed in some of the newest games. Like Halo. Or just FPS's in general, like myself (they're just not my cup of tea). It was a night class. When a bunch of the guys in the class found out that the prof had never played Halo, they told her they'd fix that for her if she wanted. She accepted. That's how we all spent the remainder of the last class of the semester after finishing our final playing Halo 2. A few of those guys brought their XBoxes to class with them, hooked one of them up to the in-class projector, and took the time to actually show/teach her how to play Halo 2. No gatekeeping or sexist bullshit at all, which was really nice to see. I left a little after the normal ending time of 9:45, but they apparently stayed there for a couple more HOURS playing Halo with that Prof. And I just find that really wholesome. 🙂

I've only ever seen people talk about this "run" in hindsight, saying how obvious it is that he's a cheater and just bad at the game. I appreciate the extra context, history and nuance you provided. I think the fact that he thought he could do this with seemingly so little preparation says something about his character, which obviously fits pretty well with him cheating records but I could still see someone with legitimate runs overestimating himself and doing something like this. On its own it's not really proof of anything.

I played Halo Reach leisurely on normal after not playing for 10 years since a child and finished it in about the same time he did while dying only a few times. This is not even slightly impressive. Obviously Halo 2 is not Halo Reach but he seems like someone who never played Halo before but watched some speed running videos.

34:35 This is an interesting video for sure, but don't minimize what Cody Miller did as "just lying on the internet". Legitimate speedrunners are people who put a tremendous amount of time and effort into getting as good as they are at the games they play. Cheaters, take away attention from the real speedrunners by faking records, getting invented to big events like GDQ, and they steal the spots in official rankings and competitions with real prizes, including money prizes. The guy "held the record" for The Maw for 9 years. So basically, for 9 years, all the people playing the level legitimately and actually beating the real record (which nobody knows about because we thought Cody Miller had it), never got any kind of recognition for the time and work they put into the game. Your entire recap is very interesting, though. It's great that you put this all together. Props!

The way you portrayed Cody Miller really reminds me of somebody I used to game with online; we played endgame content with a relatively high skill floor with respect to the rest of the game. They knew all the tricks, but they had absolutely terrible mechanics/execution. Even with every ingame advantage at their disposal they could barely perform a casual runthrough. That didn't stop them from going straight to trying to play with the very top speed players. Like Cody this player cheated an achievement. This was nothing as prestigious as a speedrunning world record, but even so it was something that was respected within this community almost as a rite of passage to being a high level player; having it would put you above most players, and not having it would make you a nobody. Unlike Cody's spliced run, the legitimacy of this cheated achievement was blatant. The strangest thing about this player is that they really acted like they knew better than players orders of magnitude better than themselves even though it was so obvious that they didn't. This player had wasted everybodies time, had no social awareness, and was a giant pain in the ass, so they were bullied out of the community. They spent a lot of time being looked down upon before they finally realized they were being a clown, and then left silently. I think they did what they did out of a desire to be good at the game they loved and because they wanted to fit in, but failed on both ends. It makes me sad knowing that if they could just see things a little differently maybe we would've been friends. It may have only been a footnote in your video, but it meant a lot to me when you said Cody was still in contact with Goatrope. Goatrope did what I didn't do and all I can do now is hope that guy found happiness somewhere else.
