This tells the story of Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini, two very different men who became close friends for a few years only to have a nasty falling out. But what happened?

I’m glad that so much of his footage still exists. I suppose I can compare him with Buster Keaton. Both great showmanship, both appear that they are weaklings only to blow you away with how agile there were. Only difference is one was a comedian and the other a thriller. Both were in near fatale situations

Harry famously said to Bess, his wife, "if anyone is going to rise from the grave, it will be me." Even Bess would say that he likely said that because he knew it wasn't possible.

I thought Houdini discounted Lady Conan-Doyle contacting his mother was because his mother only spoke Yissish and Houdini felt she would only speak to him in that language,

That and the fact that the spirit of Houdini's mother presumably drew a Christian cross on the sheet of paper. This sealed the deal for Houdini, as his mother was Jewish. Houdini's father was a rabbi.

There’s a great TV series, called Houdini and Doyle, where Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle try to solve mysteries, that are always suspected to be paranormal. For some reason, it takes place long before they met (in 1901 or so) but I really enjoyed the series regardless. There are only 10 episodes, but I recommend you check it out!

Priceless compilation. I've done cursory glances on the subject...you’ve put it together fantastically. The photos are stunning. Sending this using the Share arrow above, to all my addressbook. Anyone interested in the period would find this fascinating.

Doyle was also fooled into believing faires existed; due to a faked photograph by two girls. Kind of funny, considering his literary legacy.

Fantastic topic for a 20s video! I had no idea about Doyle using stop-motion dinosaurs to try and prove that ghosts could be real.

It's hard to say exactly. In the U.S., where I'm from, it was a fascinating time when the modern form of national pop culture was forming. It feels somewhat familiar, but so far away. Many people people appreciate the "1920s aesthetic" but aren't too well-versed in the context, so I try to do my best to simplify it, especially for younger people of my generation and below. So I guess that's my motivation. I guess I just don't want that time to be forgotten, good and bad things alike. In many other countries, it was the beginning of their modern age, though not always quite as fondly-remembered as in the U.S., but still interesting nonetheless for understanding their current situations.

I don't think compromise has anything to do with it. Paranormal isn't real, and Doyle wouldn't accept that.

You're never gonna prove spiritualism is wrong or not real to people who wanna believe no matter how much you prove it it's just a waste of time so why bother proving anything long as you know
