A "redneck" is a term from the U.S. originally describing rural, working-class people, especially farmers with sunburned necks. Over time, it became a stereotype for poor, unrefined Southerners, sometimes used as an insult. But many have reclaimed it with pride, seeing it as a symbol of hard work, independence, and rural values. Today, it’s tied to hobbies like hunting and fishing, country music, and a love of the outdoors-kind of like celebrating a no-frills, down-to-earth lifestyle. Something akin to "proper country folk" in the U.K.

It actually originates, however, from labor movement in which the minors in West Virginia I think it was we're wearing red handkerchiefs on their necks to identify themselves as part of that movement.

@@therewillbecatswithgwenhwyfarPartially correct. The term was also used in 1890 populist movement and involved the red bandanna. The west Virginia case was in 1921. Originally I was just going to try and make a humorous remark about pencil necks and rednecks...But then I wound up spiraling down the rabbit hole! Learn something new everyday. I have always looked at the term 'red neck' as a positive. Personalities pending. Happy new year. :)

At least in the 1980's, we used the term redneck to mean rural and by extension unsophisticated, not Southern and unsophisticated. I have always heard it used for poor southerners, but that is mostly because rural southerners are stereotypically less well-off than the rural people in the Pacific Northwest. If someone from here was considered unsophisticated, we said they were red.

Redneck is a bit of a derogatory word, yes. However, it doesn't refer strictly to people in the south. It stemmed from being about outdoor laborers (who would get sunburned - hence red neck). Now, it generally refers to uncultured and/or poor people. Typically, these people live in rural areas, but not always.
@Casey280273 күн бұрын
How dare you say it’s a derogatory term. We are not insulted or offended by what we are.
@goatkiller666Күн бұрын
I think it’s similar to the n-word, in that plenty of people call themselves rednecks and it’s just descriptive, and plenty of other people call people OTHER than themselves rednecks, and they mean it as an insult. It’s generally applied to white people, though… so it’s unlike the n-word in that ways. It’s also kind of regional. When I lived in Texas, there were rednecks. Those same people living in Louisiana (just to the east) would call themselves Cajuns. Or coon-asses. There is a difference between the two, and people have very strong opinions about it… something to do with which side of the Interstate freeway you lived on, someone once told me… not sure which side was which title, and I absolutely do not have an opinion about which side is better. I wasn’t FROM Texas, so I don’t think I get an opinion on which term was correct for people in Louisiana. But I can mention that it wasn’t ‘redneck’. I am pretty sure in Tennessee, they prefer ‘hillbilly’. Maybe other parts of Appalachia as well, but Trae Crowder is from TN, so I’m pretty confident of that. When I lived in the Carolinas, it was “redneck” again. I’m originally from the Pacific Northwest, and we just called ourselves “white trash”. I’m pretty sure Canada even has their own word for us, though I’m not sure what it is.
@TomSherwood-z5l3 күн бұрын
Actually.....I was given to understand redneck was applied to catholics at some point in the past but it must be ancient as I never heard it.
@romaschild33 күн бұрын
The term "Red Neck" refers to farmers whose necks are red from being out in the sun all the time. Farmers, ranchers and anyone who lives in a rural area or small town are called "Red Necks".
@davidcosta22443 күн бұрын
No, it doesn't come from that, because it drives from the coal miners striking in West Virginia in the 1890's wearing red handkerchiefs around their necks.
@romaschild33 күн бұрын
@@davidcosta2244 - Perhaps it originated in different places. If it were just from coal miners then not all country bumpkins would be considered red necks.

Redneck can be an insult, depending who is saying it. It comes from Scotland and the Presbyterian Church who believed that communication with the divine was between a man and God directly. The Stuarts (like the King James Bible guys) saw this as a threat because clearly God spoke to the king, who was in charge of all his subjects, and of course denying the king's authority was treason. Some Presbyterians made a Covenant, some even signed in blood, to God and many were persecuted and executed for their religion. The sign that the Covenanters would know each other by was a red scarf. They were called "rednecks" well before coming to the New World. It was not a slur, it was a term of respect for those who were willing to die for their beliefs. Lots of good KZbin channels on Scottish history, if anyone is interested.

Redneck has 3 meanings, 2 historic, and 1 ongoing - when it first came to the language, it meant someone who worked on a farm so hard that his neck turned red. - it meant someone who's backwoods, racist, or/and not socially on the right side. - the modern meaning is someone who's living a bit more of a frugal lifestyle, lives in the countrysides, doesn't earn much money, etc. -- It's also associated with hard word, and objects of hard work like shovels, leaf blowers, etc. -- usually means that they're involved in farming culture. I just know what it means or meant. I have no idea why the meaning shifted to each other.
