Just changed the oil in my prime at 1309 miles. My tech put it in a clean container to see how it looks. After seeing it, I am a believer of changing out the initial oil early. The engine was used at least 700 of those miles with three trips to the mountains.

Great News! I have FINALLY found a Rav4 Prime SE without the moonroof option. I take delivery next week on July 18th. The other good news affects this video at timestamp 6:30. Where Ahmed says the SE trim has a 3.3 kw charger, Toyota has made an upgrade for 2023: the 2023 Rav4 Prime now has the 6.6 kw charger on ALL Rav4 Prime's, both SE and XSE trims. Yayyyy! The one I am getting is dark blue, not my favorite color which is white (because it gets really hot in the summer where I live), but I'll learn to love it. I've been looking for one of these since October 2020 - almost 3 years now - and I am going nuts here in anticipation of finally sitting in one of my very own, buckling up, and pressing that "Power" button for the drive home from the dealer. Just 5 days from now! Another comment about Toyota's reasoning for only allowing the Prius Prime / Rav4 Prime battery to charge to 80% in "Charge" mode (time stamp 8:46 in the video). I've read somewhere that this is so that the battery will have some reserve capacity in it to absorb regen braking energy, should you encounter a long, steep downgrade, without the car having to resort to ICE compression braking right away, as soon as you start down a hill. Also, regen braking on steep downgrades at 55 mph, can send as much as 15 to 25 kilowatts to the battery (I've tested this myself on my Prius Prime with the Hybrid Assistant app), and as the battery approaches 78% State of Charge, the maximum regen braking power it will accept starts to drop sharply. Once past 82% State of Charge, the battery will not accept regen braking charge at more than about 2 kilowatts, which more or less renders regen braking on downhills totally ineffective. When you are driving in mountainous terrain, it can be helpful to climb hills in EV mode untill the battery state of charge is at 40~50%, so that you will have plenty of capacity in the battery to accept regen braking energy on the downhills. I've discovered this in my own personal experience of driving a Prius Prime, and I'm pretty sure it applies to the Rav4 Prime as well.

Hello! Like everyone else here, I want to thank you for this. I just got myself a Rav4 Prime and am enjoying thoroughly. I did learn a lot from this video, BUT - I was wondering if you could do a video to show how to clean the filters for the ev systems? I got the Toyota Care when I bought the car but I want to be able to do a lot of the maintenance myself if I can, but I'm not 100% sure where to go for things like the filters, checking the coolant, etc for the EV system, much less what to actually look for when it's "bad." Hope to see the "where to go to change and check the things" video!

@@JayTdub13 Yeah its been very long awaiting. They should have had it by now already. Since the popularity Gen2 Prius which faired excellent in efficiency and realiabliity, we have all been waiting for Toyota hybrid system being adopted to bigger projects. Rav4 and Sequoia are not big enough as they dont deliver much on torque. There is certainly demand of market for efficieny in high torque commercial sectors like the Vans, and medium sized trucks. I am wondering if they will ever get there before the EVs gain into it.

AS Always, You are the best. This RAV4 Prime is at the same level as Higher-end EV like Tesla or Porsche. Not Cheap stupid air-cooled disposable like Nissan Leaf, Renault Zeo, Lupo EV, or Smart EV. The range is now 700 miles or more than 1000Km and basically replaces any diesel. The way it is designed from a mature Prius-style hybrid and excellent 2.5 Dual injection engine. This prius and RAV4 plug-in is not disposable cars like most EVs because the battery replacement is not skyrocketed like Tesla or any EV.

My friend, you are amazing. You are generous, you are an excellent teacher. And as I have had the occasion to say, you are so good even I think I am capable of performing (oil change, other interventions you teach...) Yes, I was convinced, I would observe the 8000km limit between oil changes... and make sure to let the ICE motor run for a tank a week, not plugging in a Prius / RAV Prime otherwise creating problems with the "innards" for lack of lubrication... so I am buying a Tesla. Thank you for so much excellent work, it really convinced me that "I'm too old" to be a slave to OIL anymore. Thank you for your continued expositions of quality ICE information.

I hope they reserved enough capacity for the battery to wear. From my research on EVs, (Excluding Nissan Leaf, that is a special case) you want to keep the battery between 20% and 80% capacity most of the time. That is one of the reasons I decided to skip the PHEV generation completely. I'm sure Toyota's engineers have thought this through much better then Mitsubishi, Kia and MG (among some others that are for sale in my country) Excellent content as always, can't wait for more. I hope you can do a video on the Lexus ux300e some day.

Hey CCN!!! Thanks to you and Professor John Kelly I now have a Rav 4 Prime and it is working PERFECTLY for my needs. Lot of fun too. Big question I cant get a straight answer on. Where is the 80% threshold on the battery? (2021 SE). I use the charging schedule and it charges me to bout 44 miles range. But my engine charging wont engage after 30 miles of range. But I see other people who just leave their car plugged in and get 50+ miles. You see I like to ride my motorcycle in the summer to work and the car will sit in the driveway in the sun for a few days straight. Whats the greatest level of charge I can keep in the battery before I hit that 80% threshold lithium ions dont like?

congrats on reaching 100k ! your hard work and attention to detail have certainly paid off. I bought a new Rav4 Hybrid (sport) in 2019 Europe, (ireland), and it has been back to the garage on two occasions without success to fix a loud creaking / rattle noise, on the passager side 'B' pillar/door, when the chassis is stressed over bumpy or uneven road surfaces. The dealer replaced the bonnet hinge, and also stripped down the wing, front dashboard, and pillar, to see if it was an issue with the 'welding' between panels, but the noise is still there. Just wondering if the 2019 RAV4 subscribers have experienced anything similar, or could it be related to the 'loose mirror' issue that you have highlighted ? any suggestions or advise would be appreciated, thanks. My gut is telling me that Toyota has their ABS programmed with too much sensitivity. I have driven GMs, Fords, other Toyotas, Subarus, VWs and Porsches. The Germans dial in their ABS very well. I have hammered on the brakes in my RAV4 Prime at highway speed with lots of confidence. My Prius Prime pleasantly surprised me with its strong braking as well.

Really enjoy and value your videos on the RAAV4 Prime. Understand the charging schedule, but it is not as flexible as it should be to allow for time of day electric rates. Question assume a 120 V charging connection and its appx. 12.5 hours to obtain a full charge. Further assume that you set the charging schedule to be ready at 5 AM which implies a 4:30 PM starting time. However, I would like to understand what would happen if you plug the charge cord at 8 PM which means that only 9 hours are in front of the 5 AM start time. Will it stop charging at 5 AM? Obviously I understand that the unit will not be fully charge (appx. 75%) Thanks for your input.

Another quick question. My battery tester lets me know what % I have left in my vehicle batteries. (My Tundra has a 3-year old battery that's at 70% so I'm keeping an eye on it.) Do we have any way to see the health on those big EV batteries? My wife's 2017 Prius used to get 60 mpg but getting 55 mpg now so I'm wondering about the batteries.

I sent an email to Carcarenut asking about the Toyota battery charging algorithm. When the battery is at 100% is that 100% of the 18kw or 100% of the usable 14kw? Longevity studies suggest not charging over 80% and less is better combined with no deep discharges.

I bought a Camry hybrid and i get so tired of people saying why didn't you just buy a tesla and I say i want a car that is still serviceable in 20 years that isn't over complicated. Looking at that prime battery it's very serviceable as with all the electronic components looks like a mad science experiment that has been clean up i don't recommend just diving into the electronic but I'm sure a technician can have an answer quickly

If you will go down on rav4 prime from a very high hill for very long time. Do you also can charge the battery up to 80 % like in combation engine mode by the button near the shifter? I have seen videos with a prius hev where the battery becomes full so fast on big hills. Also I have seen a tesla video where a dude charged 14kwt just by regenerative coasting from very high hills. Can rav4 prime do the same With his big plug-in battery?

I'm curious as to what the 2024 Rav4 Prime XSE with Premium Package 12V battery normal parasitic current drain should be after the car is off more than 1 hour? I measured mine today 6/26/2024 (2024 model bought new in Dec of 2023) and it was stable at 105 milliamps after 1 hour 10 minutes (verified all lights in the car were off by observing it in a pitch black garage). Does that seem normal? Reason I ask is I am adding a dashcam which I have measured at 182 milliamps in parking mode (the dashcam has both a timer setting which I currently have set at 3 hours and a voltage monitor I set to turn off if below 12 V, so whichever occurs first will turn off the camera) and wanted to get an idea of how long I could actually reasonably run it in parking mode off the 12V battery?

QUESTION: I have had the R4Prime now for a little over a year, and I just crossed 4K miles. So, I don't really drive a lot anymore (thanks to Covid I work from home now). Basically, the car sits with zero charge unless I know that I'm going somewhere. Is that bad? They say don't keep it at 100% charge, but is zero charge also not good? Regarding the Rav4 prime, I've heard from comments made that it is better to do an overnight charge of around12 hours of gradual charging as this will increase the lifespan of the battery as opposed to high power quick charge of 2 or 4 hours. @@johncrump328 Hey John, a fellow Rav4 Prime driver here....not sure if you found the rattle or not. But for me...I actually found a "Technician's pry-type tool" inside the rear driver side panel. When I was taking it off to install a rear tailgate switch to run the wire towards the 120v plug by the rear passenger side, I found it as I took the panel off. WOW...I was surprised. Guess as it goes through the assembly line with the fast paces and repetitive assembly line, the person just forgot about it. It didn't cause any damage or anything. But just a first time I've ever seen it. So maybe in your case, an assembly line worker might have dropped or left behind something in one of the A pillars or door panels maybe. Good luck buddy. Take care and stay safe. JT

When you set the schedule such that the car be ready at 5 am and you are using a 240 V system for charging. It would seem to me that theoretically the charging would start at appx. 12:30 am. However looking at the kWh flow from the power company it looks like it starts the charge earlier and completes the charge appx. 1 hour before the 5 am scheduled time. furthermore the current flow appears to reduce to appx. 1/3 to 1/2 the current flow during the last 1/2 hour of the charge. My observation is that it completes the charge appx. 1 to 1-1/2 prior to 5 am. Is this normal? It is important for time of day power rates. Thanks for your input

Okay my pp takes 6:10 hours and ten minute to charge every time with 120v. With 240v at 1kw per hour it takes 4 hours. At Chargepoint 240v 3kw per hours it take 2 hours. So I never try full charge at home but it must be around 2 hours as charge point. My charge is retrofitted and can deliver 6kw max.

There is so much discussion about charge times SOOOO how long does it take for the engine to charge an almost empty battery to 80%. On long trips with some mountain driving does it pay to let the car charge while driving on flat roads so it will be charged for uphill portions of the trip when more power is needed? Of course you can recover most of that on the downhill side of the mountain.
Dont do this to your RAV4 Prime and Prius Prime
