Phil is the literal OG of the deathcore world. He has been a top 1% vocalist for like 20 years. The clean singing believe it or not, is actually fairly new to Whitechapel. It was a surprise to everyone. He has another song that is 100% clean vocals and it’s a beautiful song. It’s called Orphan.

Phil is an OG. The 'king' of deathcore in many minds. As for the country feel, they are very proud of their Tennessee roots. Their logo is a play off of the Tennessee flag. I haven't really heard anyone blend it like they have. This album, Kin, and The Valley are more in this direction. His clean singing is wonderful as well. I am so beyond excited to see the camera. Phil is my idol. Bring it soon! Thanks for everything that you are doing for our community and the scientific understanding of it all.

I love WC so much!!! I am so glad you have reacted to and analysed a WC song and Phil’s vocals! I have always wondered how he gets so low, delivers with so much power, and enunciates with his vocals. One of, if not, the best in the industry! I am ecstatically happy you picked up on the brackets in the lyrics! There’s more to it considering the visuals presented in the music video and the theme/story and concept of the album, ‘Kin’, and WC’s last album, ‘The Valley’, and the explanation of which and the lyrics accompanying which that Phil has detailed. Great timing for their new single tomorrow, and later, new album!

I requested it years ago when you first reacted to Will Ramos's vocals, but I'm sure it got lost in the shuffle. It'll probably be lost again, but Oliver Ray Aleron from Archspire does deserve your attention. He mixes death metal vocal styles with speed rapping for ridiculously fast, yet clearly enunciated delivery and his breath control is downright insane. He'd probably also be up to having a camera down his throat, too! Oli also does some other techniques you haven't looked into yet, like inhale vocals. Archspire toured with Whitechapel a year or two ago across the US as well, so if you've already talked to Phil you can easily get in contact with Oliver through him!

Phil (and Whitechapel) has been maturing a lot recently. Their older work was more about pain and anger, now there's a tinge of sadness and acceptance to it that really shows a maturity that I just love to hear. Their sound is getting more complex and nuanced. Kin is a very special album and it kicks of with THIS MASTERPIECE!

I can't tell you how happy this makes me, Elizabeth. Whitechapel was my introduction and very first deathcore band I got introduced to, and I've been a fan ever since. Phil Bozeman is an amazing man, he has such a sad past, and not going to lie, he has been an inspiration to me. He lost both of his parents at a young age, I lost my mother when I was 19... so when I heard in an interview about him sharing his past and stuff, and how mentally stable he is, it opened my eyes.

Another thing I love about Whitechapel is Phil writes from his own experience. Which wasn't easy. He lost his father at an early age, his mother suffered from mental illness and addiction (ending in a fatal overdose), and his stepfather was abusive. All this transferred to Phil to some degree as an adult, but he overcame it. Hence his battling his demon here and in Without You/Without Us. He shares this to help others and returns the devotion of their fans fully. Every year on Halloween the band does a hometown show, just to give back.

When Elizabeth was talking about "...turning vulnerabilities into strengths..." it reminded me of one of the things that I think is the appeal of aggressive music: catharsis. It's also there in punk and hardcore, or even any music (or media, like a good horror movie) that delves into darker themes, but it's kind of baked into metal, especially certain subgenres. I'm not a psychologist, so take it with a grain of salt, but I think there's something about it that's not unlike Jung's idea of "Shadow Work", that metal in particular is great for allowing us to safely confront our inner demons, help us to get a handle on them, and thus achieve that feeling of catharsis. I do know there have been studies that would seem to suggest I'm on the right track, at least!

Its not really surprising that folksy sound finds it way into their music. The band is from Knoxville TN, pretty much the epicenter of bluegrass. So Phil and the guys are just incorporating their heritage. One thing that impresses me about Phil is the degree of enunciation he gets with an extreme level of harshness. Phil may not have the range of techniques that some artists do, but what he does, he does with equisite perfection.( also hes a great traditional vocalist). Absolutely one of my favorite artists. Seeing them live is a must for anyone in to their music or style of. I started listening to them for their sound, but once I dug in to Phil's lyrics, I was an immediate fan. Really looking forward to you getting him on board to look at what he's doing vocally.

Listen to Spiritworld. They call themselves Deathwestern. Not deathcore + country but thrash + western. It's so good.

Phil is the man! The last two albums from them are so deep and emotional, the way he tells the stories is so incredible. Definitely worth a listen front to back on both albums and a deep dive into the struggles he went through. They are a bit different than their older stuff, but truly incredible albums.

How can they be one of the GOATs of a genre they're not part of? (I do dig the band though)

I third So many people here. Watch Phil do Unanswered and ou can see how he pushes his air, and stiffens those vocal and neck muscles to push his voice. The dude is unreal.

Hickory Creek is probably the best example of his clean singing and a great, powerful song when you know the story behind it.

It is amazing how now, Elizabeth can enjoy deathcore and even get excited and all nerdy. I will always remember the reaction to "To the Hellfire" from Lorna Shores. 🖤

You really need to watch whitechapels without you/without us. It's the sequel video to I will find you. You will really enjoy it. And then the next track "Kin" may be my favorite Whitechapel song ever. The whole album is a concept album and it's a sequel to the valley which is another concept album. Both deal with Phil's traumatic childhood experiences

Phil's story is a tragic one. This song though is amazing. In fact most of the tracks on this album and The Valley are amazing. They are two parts of a story of Phil's childhood tragedies.

I would love to watch you interview Phil! Whitechapel has been one of my favorite bands since The Somatic Defilement. Now its time to dig into Fit For An Autopsy and Joe Badolato. Excellent songs, brutal screams, and beautiful cleans.

Great one Elizabeth! If you've never heard Phil Bozeman's cover of Unanswered by Suicide Silence, you gotta check that out. Nobody ever did Mitch Lucker more justice in a cover and it was at the tribute show celebrating Mitch's life. Truly incredible!

I clicked on this video the instant I saw it as this is one of the songs I use for my vocal sessions and I was curious to hear your thoughts. You're absolutely correct about enunciating while doing harsh vocals as well. The shape of your entire mouth and your tongue position is arguably even more important to your sound than with cleans, so that leaves precious little leeway for good diction. It took me forever to get it down.

Hi Elizabeth I really love your channel. I love seing other people discovering and enjoying the music I love. Your channel helps me notice certain things in music that I have missed, not being a musician. I am happy to see how much you enjoy metal and I was wondering what you would have to say about "love metal" and specifically the band called HIM. Their vocalist Ville has an angelic voice. I recommend these songs: Bury Me Deep Inside Your Heart (1998), KIlling Loneliness, Join Me In Death.
