As scary as Australian magpies can be, they are actually quite friendly, i had a similar interaction as this lady with a wild magpie, me and my older brother were playing with shells on the beach then a maggie came up to us out of nowhere and began joining in on the fun!

I think Magpies are super smart, similar to Ravens and Crows. We had one as a pet, my dad found him, he had fallen out of his nest. So we raised him on our farm, and he was free to leave when he was old enough, which he did over a period of time. We had named him "Hugh". However, later it turned out that "Hugh" was a female!! Because she brought her babies back home 🏡 to visit!! 😁 💙🐦💜🌏

Amazing, it's like the leader of a pack watching those Magpies following Danielle! She seems like an awesome person, as a fellow sufferer of anxiety and depression I know where she is coming from. I would happily spend all my time with animals rather than humans, they are much easier to understand and are incredibally loyal and loving. Yep. Totally agree, @johndavidflynn2369.!!! I choose to not have many friends. People & society in general disappoint me in SO many ways. With animals you get unconditional love, no matter what sort of crap day they are having. I have my own little group of Maggies, & following Danielle's suggestions, I don't feed them much, just make sure there is plenty of water for them especially on hot summer days. My reward is them serenading me & behaving like a bunch of clowns...🤣🤣🤣👍

We had a family of magpies visiting us and one of the young ones would come inside..when the weather was very hot we left a sprinkler on low and a water bowl. They stayed around it all day. They would sing wonderfully to me when I whistled to them. We moved away but I will never forget them.

I think the couple of crows I feed are like that. Such clever birds , they are always watching you from the trees, they squark for breakfast on weekends .Seen bee eaters,king fishers and am planting sunflowers to get the parrots around.Part of my veggie patch is allotted pesticide free and left to run full cycle. I get lots of butterflies as well.Surprising to see what you can attract to the back yard.

I love hearing and seeing the Magpies whenever we're visiting Australia, love hearing the warbling every morning wherever we are. Luckily we've always been staying for months at a time but ill health means we've not been for 3 years now. Seeing this story and hearing them has been wonderful, also seeing how these intelligent Corvids can be such amazing companions whilst remaining wild birds.

Neither do I, I have no friends and no gf. My old friends are heavy drinkers and that isn't the life for me so I exist alone. I'm ok....btw I have my own pet magpie I reared from a baby, I saved him. Happy times together.

There’s 4 ravens at work that visit me every day. Two are mom and kid or dad and kid I can’t tell. They nested right in front of where i work in the back. The other two live somewhere nearby and they get really close to me or flyby close and make weird noises and also bring me random trash (gifts) i feed them of course i guess that’s why the like me

But as an Australian I can also say that they will remember anyone who have gained their trust. I can comfortably feed multiple magpies by hand on my daily walks now, mostly because they recognise me as someone they can trust

So happy to see how much these cheeky birds have helped you in your life. A long time ago my family did have one as a pet, but the bird was free to roam around the house and as you said , it didn’t have its wings clipped either. that is true for pretty much any animal - being a pet means they're imprisoned, castrated and have their will broken. i get that most people who keep pets don't have bad intentions (or don't realize the existence of a very dark side within themselves, due to being domesticated from their childhood), but it seems impossible to me to seriously reflect on this issue and not come to the conclusion that it's just as bad as keeping a human slave. ...but yeah, people on average are either stupid or a**holes... that's why i don't socialize very much either

I think this magpie noticed this woman was nice to birds. Perhaps gave them bird food, or chased away a cat whom was hunting on them... Crows and magpies are quite intellingent, they notice which human is friendly to them, and whom not.

Magpies, Crows, Ravens, and the like are very intelligent and curious birds. That first Magpie will have been watching you for a while and deciding if you were safe or not to say hello, its really something special to gain the trust of a wild creature, you are truly blessed.

Robbins will do the same. When I was tending my garden a few years ago. Tending means me sitting and watering with a hose. The robbins became familiar with me. I would give them baths with the hose and talk to them.... no I am not crazy! But I swear the oldest one would yell at me when I directed the hose at another one! ha. He had me trained! It would squawk or chirp not sure the right term but it was very loud until I gave it the hose shower again. He would fly up to perch on the back of my chair, and peck the back of my neck while they dried their wings off in the sun. Guessing they wanted a grey-haired nest lol.

It's true the crows, ravens, jays and other corvids are known for their intelligence around the world.... yet the Australian magpie's intellect has evolved completely independently of the corvids, since it's only distantly related and not part of the _corvidae_ family.
