As my aunt says "You have to be a certain kind of crazy to have a parrot. Crazy but kind." She has 8 parrots now. Her first was Rambo in 1988 he was baught as a baby but the rest are all rescues. When she found out just how many parrots are surrendered or thrown away by people who didn't know what they were getting into, she's only ever adopted then on. There are so many looking for homes it's insane and parrots are one of the hardest animals to rehab and re-home. She would rescue more in a heartbeat if she could but is at full capacity right now. She hopes when she gets enough for her dream homestead she can build an aviary and get a few more. It's a shame just how many parrots are in needs of homes because of mostly ignorance. At times she wishes that people would have to go through a pet care class before they can get said pet beforehand, takeing care of anouther life is a full time job.

Just a warning regarding Ringnecks. They have very, VERY difference personalities, even more different than the two seen on this videos. Some will talk nonstop, some won't learn any words. Some are friendly, some are destructive. They are super smart and demand attention, toys and challenges. They are not a bird for beginners, although they aren't close to being the most challenging either (those would be macaws and cockatoos). Birds are wonderful, but make sure you learn as much as you can before brings them home, because you are the one responsible for their quality of life and happiness from that point on.

It's true though, and many people who get parrots never should have done it. They don't realise they're bringing a creature into their home that will be loud, messy, destructive and get into everything. They're really intelligent and they need lots of stimulation or they'll get bored and even more destructive than they naturally are. They are gregarious so they need tons of interaction and love and time from their humans or they become depressed and develop behaviour problems like self-harm or incessant ear-piercing screaming. Not a pet for everyone.

Birds are so much more than some people think they are. They are not a thing that you keep in a cage and chuck some seed. A bird is your friend
@y_fam_goeglyd3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for saying how much hard work they are! They can be a lifetime companion - they can be _two_ lifetime companions if you get one of the longest-living ones when you're older yourself (so please make sure your bird will be cared for by someone it likes!). Given how heartbreaking it is to lose a dog after a relative handful of years, birds are better bets for those who want to stand a chance of not getting their heart broken every decade or so. But they are _constant_ work, _especially_ members of the parrot family. That includes budgerigars - they're also very companionable and smart, and seriously undervalued imho. They're not as flashy as big parrots, but they can be terrific companions (if you treat them well) and they're smart too! My gran would let hers out of its cage for a fly around the living room (this was in the early 70s, and probably before then, so she would have been considered quite progressive by some people). When I went to stay with her, we'd have a daily reading time, and Beauty used to come and sit on one of our shoulders - the ones touching each other - and would "read" with us! He loved it - he was free to fly around anywhere, and if the story wasn't so good, he might fly off (he'd fly into his cage when _he_ wanted to return, but if someone was to come to the house, he knew Gran needed him to go back to his cage to keep safe. Like I said, smart bird!) I don't particularly hold with keeping birds (imho they should be free), but I am not against people like this lady who is doing everything to keep her family members happy and healthy. Unfortunately, too many people act in the way she warned about - they chuck in some seed, maybe get around to cleaning the water bowl and bottom of the cage every so often, and apart from a quick "who's a pretty boy?" they spend no time with them. If they're in an outdoor aviary with others of its breed, then you can lower your interaction (as long as you keep the place clean, the water fresh and the food good, along with all good husbandry tasks), but I don't see the point. Maybe that's just me 🤷🏻♀️ Meanwhile, I wish this lady and her birds a long, happy, healthy life together, and please let us know when the chicks do come. If she's already _that_ maternal... Prepare for a lot of noise! 😂💕

Ringnecks are highly intelligent birds, and they can learn a lot of things if correctly taught. Psittacine birds in general are very nice and intelligent. On the Ringnecks, females are the dominant ones. If they don't like a male they can even kill him. In this case, as the male was already an adult bird, and he already lived on that territory (the house) and the female much younger and arrived later, she obviously accepted him. So thankful to lovely people like this who advocate for these beautiful little animals and try to spread educations that just sticking them in a cage is unutterable cruelty.

@Marcin Trójmiasto is that why you have so many puppy mills in China?

I mean technically any animal is food. That mostly happens in poor parts of those countries.

I just love Parrots and have thought about getting one. I know they need company and stimulation, it's fabulous to see them interact with Anne and play games etc. They're so sweet and I think what a fantastic idea Anne had to write the book giving people like me a better idea of what's involved should I get a Parrot moving forward.

Birds are meant to fly. They should NEVER live in a cage. Breaks my heart to know there are so many living caged up and they can’t even move around like intended. These birds are very well taken care of! Thank you for sharing and being so good to them.

Personally when I was a kid my mom gets afraid of my green ringneck parrot when isn't in the cage but when she isn't near we let it loose in the house Not all of us likes keeping their parrots always in the cage

Totally agree with you.. that's why it needs a lot of preparation and knowledge before owning any pets, otherwise they will be living in minimum condition :(

As if throwing wasn't enough, she had to throw it on the floor to show who's the boss. 😂😂

Beautiful family. Birds should only sleep in a comfortable cage at night. During the day they need to be free. This family has it right.

Lol at 3:32 poor Vonnegut wanted to buy himself a yellow egg so he put it in the shopping cart but Schiele is so dominating while she put her toothpaste in the cart, she removed Vonnegut's egg from it and not only she removed it but literally threw it down the table 😢

I've been following their account for years. They are so devoted, and it's very clear that having a pet bird is a ton of work. They are tons of fun to watch, and they give me more reasons why I will never have a pet bird.

First of all I love them. 💗 But a baby parrot that still has to be fed with breeding porridge through a syringe has been removed from his parents too early which I really don't support. Other thing: with many parrots/ parakeets (not all) the females are the dominant ones and not the males. So Schiebe acts totally normal 😄. Thus said, I'm a loving parakeet owner for more than 30 years. If I'm wrong pls correct me.

My cocktails are so smart too . I rescued them . In cages full time . Now they have an aviary in my living room made with mesh . But I go sit in there with them and we play and sing . I LOVE how they love being out of their cage NOW it took months they were so CAGE protective NOW they have WAY more to be HAPPY about with swings and toys plus ME

I am disappoint. My cocktails are very not smart, and so I drink them until they get smarter. 🤨

Being a "Home body" I wvould love to have a pair of birds. I AM learning how much responsibility is involved so I will. live/enjoy all the other birds I view on KZbin. Not sure how my cats would act around birds. But I'm so thankful for all the time and patience its takes to make the videos and share the lives of these animals and their humans!!!
