So great to see the finished look. The details are always head on. We've used automotive rubber hose of different sizes to avoid wearing down the gloves. The consistency of the mortar is important in measuring even if you are not using a color dye. Mortor alone can have a different color. We Always used fresh water on our mixing so dirty water didn't factor in on a different shade when it was dry. Awesome look and hope to see it with the lighting installed. Great job Josh 👍🏻

That’s a good idea to use a rubber hose. Never thought about that. You are so right. The consistency is definitely very important when it comes to grouting. When I first started grouting back in the day I would always make it to draw and I did not learn until the second job to make it more soup. Yes fresh water is important too. Consistency of the whole job is key. Sounds like you have a lot of masonry background like we talked about before. I am honored to have subscribers like you watching!

@@TheExcellentLaborer starting young in the trades with my father in plastering and cement stucco before the newer products came around, the learning process is basically the same. Still loved keeping the product of, "old school learning" as a good rule to share as much as possible. Doing the old plaster cast work by hand was my most joyful part of my upbringing. At sixty years old now, I have never forgotten the years of training from hands on learning and teaching others. I'm so grateful that I came across your videos and can honestly say, I learn things from what you share and I appreciate your willingness to share with others. A lot of time goes into what you do in this manner and I thank you. Keep up the great job. 👍🏻

I am now fully inspired to restone my hearth behind my woodburning stove. I currently have standard size brick. A wall of 10' wide X 8 ' high. Do you recommend attaching lath over the existing brick, smooth coat, and scratch etch the mortor, or do you recommend just troweling a smooth coat over the existing brick wall, then scratch coat the fresh mortor? So to screen or not to screen? I will be refacing with real stone veneer. Thanks for all your hard work getting out these videos and inspiring us all. Everyone should at least give you a THUMBS UP when they stop by as a THANKYOU for creating a how to video. THUMBS UP!!!

I just started doom g Masonry work, and I really appreciate your videos. Not a lot of people on KZbin getting into the details with veneer stone work. That said, there are a couple of differences to how we do things and your method. For instance, we don’t do a scratch coat. It takes less time and the rocks seem to stick better. Also, I’m rarely using a grout bag. It seems quicker to just head and bed joint the rocks and clean up joints as we go, with a touch up at the end. I think this is quicker and looks great too. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this if you get a chance. Thanks again!

Found another awesome color in natural stone called vista cloud I’m gonna copy best I can . The real is just too expensive and heavy to haul and chisel cut in a lifetime so concrete veneer and good pigments are the way to go in my book for sure .

Love all your videos, they're very well laid out and descriptive. I wanted to know what you think about using a pointing tool instead of your finger? I know they're designed for brick joints, but it seems like there are alot of straight lines in your stone joints where it might be helpful. Just curious as to your opinion. Once again, great job with ALL your videos, showing how to do these projects without any extra hands.

Take and old broom stick and cut it into smaller pieces. Strike up enough joints it'll eventually file to a point and you'll be able to use it on any size stone joint.

Beautiful stone work. My husband and I are going to do the front of our house and your videos did answer a great deal of my questions. BTW, I am a cake maker, love the affiliation to an icing bag and grout bag! I was wondering if you have other videos to show the installation of the different types of the stone walls, I.e., sheets of stones, etc?

Have you ever used a wet look sealer on your stone after completion ? Wanted to know if it yellows in sunlight . I’ve used it inside a house but haven’t tried outside yet . I’m making some of this stone . The individual pieces so can match the stone out of different places to blend in . Stuff like cherry blend and rainbow with stuff like bluestone . Irregular colors and not orthodox I know but I like the rainbow effect of stone . Even a sandstone and limestone piece every once and awhile . Always an art but was curious about the sealer question . Really brings out the colors for sure about like poly or epoxy on wood .

As a Mason, homeowners don't get to tell me what products to use. They aren't the Masons and each Mason has their own style and ways of doing things. From my experience, most homeowners usually just say " you're the professional, I don't know what to do " when I ask if they have any preferences for the work and I have never really had anyone try and tell me to use a certain product or how to do my job

Great video! Much appreciated. I just mixed a batch and it was too dry. Once it looks about the same consistency as your video, when I put it in the bag, the water separated and came out but the sand/grout stayed in. Is there a specific type of sand you are using? Or any other thoughts in where I went wrong? 😅

Thanks for the tips. I've been eyeballing the ratios for my grout bag mix. With an 80 lb bag of Type-S mortar ready-mix, I have the right consistency at the start. However, it is too dry to push through the bag towards the end of the batch. I'm going to try mixing smaller batches measuring 15 qts of mix to 7 solo cups of water next time. I'm curious about where the stone veneer is below the siding. Did you use Z flashing? It looks like no. I have a similar plan to install stone veneer on the foundation below my siding.

Hey Jonathan! It does sound like you need to work with smaller batches. I usually use no more than 5 gallon buckets at a time as shown in the video. I would recommend you starting out with a little more liquid so it does not set up before you use it all. Also if it does start setting up you can always add more water. I do not use the strip because my siding goes ever my foundation about half of an inch. It would be good practice to use the z strip but I don’t like the looks of it and I never had a problem not using it. Hope that helps! Good luck with your project!

Is it possible to add grout on top of old grout? I have stone just like this but beige grout, just outdated. I’d like to keep the natural stone but use a more modern grout color. Is this a thing? & what are my options if it’s not?

excuse me, but you are overfilling the grout bag. Wait till one blows out on you and it's the only bag on the job. Don't make it so difficult to squeeze. One half of that amount still gets the same job done.
