Just a head's up, at around 50 seconds or so into the video, and running for a short time, you'll notice a change in the sound. That's due to youtube erasing some copyrighted music in the background. It doesn't last long.

The developers of this game said they knew there weren't this many automatic weapons in WW1 but they said just mostly singlefire weapons wasn't as interesting in gameplay. They also tried to make it strictly trench stuff at the beginning but found the same problem real quick obviously lol.

A decent compromise if you ask me, especially since I believe that all of them were at the very least in the prototype stage of development. So they didn't exactly make any of them up, they just added ones that weren't ever quite finished or ones that were in development but weren't finished until after WW1

My great great grandfather was conscripted into the austro-hungarian army (he was a Romanian from Transylvania) and sent to fight on the italian front. He ran away after seeing the meat grinder there and returned on foot and out of sight all the way from northern italy back home to transylvania. When he got home, my great great grandmother didn't recognize who he was (he was just skin and bones at that point). It was my great grandmother that recognized her dad. That great grandmother was forced to flee Horthy's gangs with her husband and daughter at the beginning of WWII and found refuge in the Carpathians with others. Directly after WWII, the daughter (my grandmother)'s husband protested a "vote" held by the communists when the results were announced, something along the lines of "how the hell did you guys get 99% when I didn't vote for you". He was taken away days later and sent to work on the Black Sea - Danube canal. After a while there, he was shot dead while crossing the Danube trying to escape. My family learned of his fate after 1989 from a poet that he made friends with at the canal.

10:35 that's just the video game element. EA was worried that if they stick to bolt actions, semi autos, shotguns, etc. That the player base would find the game to be 'too slow' and lose interest in a world where Call of Duty, Destiny, and Halo were still the kings of the online shooters

I’m excited to see you play through the rest of this. The game is a bit arcady but I like how the war is handled from a narrative perspective and it is a good jumping off point for people to dive into the topic properly. I agree machine guns are too numerous. There were guns like the BAR but it was experimental and not common. Light machine guns and sub machine guns only started to be used by specific handfuls of soldiers with small unit tactics being in their infancy. But I guess they are catering to a modern audience that expects automatic guns. I don’t think you can find it in the campaign but the Martini Henry is in the multiplayer and I found that gun pretty fun despite being some decades out of date. To be fair though, most soldiers would have been using essentially late Victorian guns, but the Martini Henry can be a bit unwieldy if everyone is using semis and autos like in this game. They balanced it such that it hits harder than most other guns though so it was rewarding as a sharpshooting weapon.

3:17 towards the end of the war, more mobile machine guns were invented and were used, most notably the French CSRG Chauchat and towards the final weeks of the war, the American M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle. Early tactics such as “walking fire” were also tinkered with at this time too. Even so, the British and the Canadians also did devise methods and trained on hip firing the Lewis Gun, with the Canadians even making a special sling for the gun. The gun in your hands right there is the M1909 Benet Mercie, an American version of the Hotchkiss Portative.

Something to bear in mind is that in most FPS games like Battlefield, the campaign is often mostly to serve the purpose of teaching players about as many different mechanics/weapons etc as they can, for the player to then use that knowledge in multiplayer. Which is why the opening sequence is so dramatic and often historically questionable, because it switches you between every type of weapon, and every type of ground-combat related feature (vehicles, gas, bayonet charges, stationary machineguns, stay-in-the-zone style objective taking etc etc) purely to be a tutorial. Outside of historical accuracy in the opening machine, I do think Battlefield 1 has the best atmosphere out of any modern FPS game, and the graphics have held up just as well. I hope to see more "mainstream" videogames, somewhat history related of course, appear on the channel, this was a fun watch. My next recommendation? Call of Duty World at War. And of course, the rest of Battlefield 1's campaigns wouldn't go amiss :)

Would love to see more of this campaign! Great first episode, loved the additional notes you gave. As for other games, I would love to see a return to Modded Crusader Kings 3, particularly with one mod called "Crusader Wars". It let's you combine CK3 with Total War: Attila using the Medieval Kingdoms 1212 mod, where you play the game as usual, but whenever a battle comes up, you can choose to fight it in person in Attila. 1 to 1 unit scaling, and whatever happens in the battle converts back to CK3 and vice versa. (Casualties, weather, season, terrain, morale, stats etc..), with 0 work from the player. Base game has also added a new start date in the year 1178, which might be fun to check out. For additional mods I'd recommend 4 mods that does very very much if you want more historical accuracy and immersion. All 5 combined are compatible, so long as obfusCKate is at the bottom. RICE : Adds more historical characters to start as with lots of interesting decisions and mechanics, some of which are completely new and unique. Historic Invasions : Adds historical character AI invasions at their historical time and year, such as William the Conqueror in 1066 if you started before 1066, The Seljuk's of Rûm, the Teutonic and Livonian orders, and the Ottomans in 1299 among a vast host of others. But it might make things hard if playing in a region expecting a historical figure to rise. More Interactive Vassals : Makes vassals do a lot more for (or against) you in terms of internal wars. Were a civil war to break out vassals can choose a side, or remain neutral. Or if an outside force invades your lands, the vassal must join you in fighting to defend their lands if they are under threat. Adds some 30+ unique features with them, making you need to actually think a bit more about your own vassals, or fellow vassals were you to be one. Highly customizable in Game Rules settings before game start. obfusCKate : Let's you not be omnipresent anymore, you don't automatically know the exact number of every land, or what people you have never met even look like, or their stats. You need to meet people, hire spies to investigate, or use diplomacy to trade information with other kingdoms. Certainly more difficult, but the immersion goes up by a lot with this one. Obviously there are countless other mods you can add, but these are just a few I know off the top of my head that add so much for immersion and historical accuracy without over flooding you with too much content (or performance drops).

BF1 is the first Battlefield game I played and I had such fun playing it, both the campaign and multiplayer. Made you feel like you were playing WW1 - obviously a lot of it was game-ified, like a lot of automatic weapons and vehicles operating better than IRL, but it was there. Also very unique in how it was WW1 because there's only a handful of games that are in that time period (compared to WW2, how many D-Day landings are there in games?). Also the teaser trailer with the 7 Nation Army remix hooked me from the beginning.

HEY! TheHistoryGuy! Have you played WW2 REBUILDER? Edit: Not on social media, so this is the only way I know to communicate. It's not the best for visually entertaining gameplay, but it has narratives that sound interesting to history buffs. Each country has you playing as a survivor working to rebuild various areas and structures after WW2. Whether in Great Britain discussing the blitzkrieg (I think that's right) or a civilian in Germany discussing life from their end and looking for a lost loved one while restoring damaged buildings. It might be interesting as a point to discuss life right after the end of WW2.

The Multiplayer was awesome, but unfortunately there was a long drought between maps, had bought the season pass, best $60 i had ever spent. Unfortunately, there wasn't a map for the USMC in Belluwood, which was something i wanted to know

World War I is tough for a game like Battlefield to approach, because their players by and large want to be rambo, not a desperate teenager unable to do much alone. Hence all the automatic weapons

You know the game you could try playing? Hearts of Iron 4, it’s an in depth WW2 strategy game where you can play as any country from the war

Hi Chris! You have probably already played it but if not Red Dead Redemption 2 would be an awesome playthrough. I know it is not your usual style of game and it is very long, but it is filled with so much American history it would be great to see your perspective and narrative while playing the masterpiece.

Hey Chris! Hope you're doing well! I was wondering if you've considered playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance, since its second game's release date is only a few days away! I think you'd enjoy it, especially since alot of time and effort went into making it as historically accurate as possible, while still being fun to play!
