I had an small argument with my English teacher on "often" as well. He kept saying that he never heard of anyone pronouncing the "t". But everyone around me had spoke with the "t" in "often" in the States!

same here in Canada. We have the "t" pronounced as well.
Yes, many Canadians pronounce "filet" without the "t" because this word has its etymology from the French language, and we pronounce it exactly as how the French people do. Another reason is that French is one of our official languages, and also a compulsory course in the elementary and high schools.

補充一下, "surprising" or "surprisingly" or "surprise" or "surprised", the first "r" in these words 可唸可不唸的.
@Rixchu8 күн бұрын
不限於這個字,關於 /ɚ/ (或 /ər/ 形式) 這個字音都是美式的,英式的才都只唸成 ə。
@user-kg5pu4nn6x8 күн бұрын
@@Rixchu Yes, you're right. 美式和英式的R音略有不同. For example, "Year"的R我們North Americans是發音的, 但British 卻不. Besides the "R" sound, "T" sound 也有分别. For instance, "water"的 'T' 我們North Americans是唸成 "D" sound, 但British是唸 "T" sound.
