I’m so upset because Strange and Wanda were some of my favorite characters and they completely did them dirty in WV and MOM. I already hated the messaging at the end of WV where they say “They’ll never know what you sacrificed for them” as if those poor town people were in the wrong for resenting Wanda for MIND SLAVING THEM TO THE POINT OF BEGGING FOR THE SWEET RELEASE OF DEATH. At least in WV, Wanda did show some remorse in the end so I thought maybe she would repent for what she did. BUT NO. She does a 180 and turns completely remorseless in MOM murdering multiple people including a PARENT, just to bring back some fake kids that never even existed. If you’re going to make a character who was feeling remorse and guilt for their actions turn supervillain like Wanda does in MOM, you don’t just do that instantly. That’s just not how humans work. At least show the process of her getting corrupted and descending into madness first rather than suddenly turning her bad because ‘oh motherly love blah blah blah’. It makes me angry that MCU painted WANDA, who was clearly in the wrong in WV as the sympathetic VICTIM and then proceeded to make her into an absolute devil in MOM. On top of that, Strange doesn’t even play a big role in HIS OWN MOVIE. In the end, who’s the one who defeats Wanda? America and Wanda herself(Sure, America did fight Wanda off but in the end the only reason Wanda was defeated was because she seppukued herself after realizing for herself what a horrible person she’s become). What significance did Strange even have in this movie? He didn’t do much besides magic rap battling an evil version of him(Seriously, their fight made me laugh so much and I don’t even know if that was intended or not). And when things finally seemed to get somewhat compelling, I realized it was the end of the movie. I had high hopes for this movie since, once again, Strange is one of my favorite heroes. And the more I think of this movie, the more angry I get. I’m probably being nitpicky at this point, but it seems I’m not the only one here.
@y0ima0wn Жыл бұрын
None of your points were nitpicky at all. And tbh the "motivational speech" was terrible. Strange doing that was simply the wrong decision to make in that instant. He had no reason at all to think her power could do more than create portals, and had even less reason to believe she could actually do anything with those powers. The only thing he could do in that moment is tell her "im sorry kid" then cut her head off for the fate of all of existence.

The quote in WandaVision in fact refered to the sacrifice she made during Infinity War. The show is not blaming the people to resent Wanda, it’s blaming Wanda for having made all she did. I don’t get why everyone is upset about Wanda turning dark. She was always an antihero, in Age of Ultron she quits her post when her brother dies, which causes the town to fall, and then in Civil War she loses control of her power and causes the death of civilians. Wanda was always the most controversial Avengers, everyone saw her as a dangerous threat. So I have no problem in believing that after losing the only person who sees her as normal she is ready to do everything to be happy again.
@StarWarsUnconditionalLover Жыл бұрын
Wanda was always an antihero, she managed to control herself when she was with the Avengers, but the suffering she endured during her journey were never adressed in any movies after Avengers 2. I don’t get why everyone is upset that Wanda turned evil. It’s Wanda, the one who nearly caused the fall of the Sokovia on earth by abandoning her surveillance post, and who caused a lot of civilian damages in Lagos. In the government eyes she is already a dangerous public enemy. The only reason she is not punished is because she is too powerful and can’t be condemned.
@shuttittuppitt935510 ай бұрын
In the comics, Wanda may have started on the wrong side of things (I blame bad parenting if you know who I mean), but after that, she was always a hero. She was a member of the West Coast Avengers & Force Works (among other groups). She didn't become "basket case/villain" until after Marvel comics new bosses took over & decided to slander/kill off all of the established heroes just so that they could introduce a bunch of teenaged non-white replacements because a vocal minority demanded it. Hopefully, the comics just die at this point, because like Disney, they're not backing off on this bs.

I’m glad someone called out the writing, I was starting to think I missed something because not many people weren’t mentioning it. The dialogue was so wooden, often merely the characters stating their feelings or opinions on each other with no subtlety. Characters betray their previous motivations, and scenes are extremely contrived. Speaking of nightmares, not making Nightmare the main villain of this movie was such a missed opportunity, especially if they really wanted to go with the horror element. I have 4 things to say. This movie was so bad. 1. this movie confused me so bad. Wasn't Strange's whole shtick that he wasn't afraid to make sacrifices for the greater good? That's why he's stoic and it's super useful to have an established character like that. It's what made him so instrumental in IW. It's pretty grim but you can't deny MANY people died so that one girl, America, could live. Those lives would have been saved had she been.... not saved. Strange seemed willing to make sacrifices in Infinity War but they wanted to introduce America and make a new movie so they just rewrote his character for no reason. I swear I'm gonna be so mad if after this movie they try and have him do the whole "I'm not afraid to let you die" thing again. Although I wouldn't be surprised in the least. 2. It's been months since I've seen this movie and I still am utterly shocked that this multi-million visual STORYTELLING company had their characters go to a literal FLASHBACK MACHINE. That's something I'd be secondhand embarrassed to see in a 9 year old's Frozen 2 fancfiction. a FLASHBACK MACHINE. For heaven's sake. 3. Back to Strange.. The question of "Are you happy?" Is an interesting one I guess, but it was his only arc and it had no bearing on the plot. So what if he wasn't happy in his role? The multiverse would be just fine. It's not like he COULD marry Christine, so why is the question important? It's not even a driving factor on the plot, it's literally a mini side plot. 4. Did... did they know they were going to do literally nothing with Mordo when they gave him all the screentime in DS1?? He was set up as SUCH a compelling villian who had to watch his entire worldview collapse as the person he trusted betrayed him (the Ancient One dabbling in dark power) and had him vow to kill Doctor Strange. All that set up and the payoff LITERALLY happened OFFSCREEN in a throwaway line from Strange ("You dedicated ur life to killing me" or whatever i'm not watching it again). That is incomprehensible. No, the Other Mordo doesn't count. He's not our Mordo. I simply cannot believe they threw him away like that. this movie made me hate the MCU. I used to be so into it, watched every movie and show. Now, Thor 4 came and went and I barely noticed, much less went to see it. They clearly don't care about their own movies, so why should I?

For your first point, honestly I think that's not a bad thing, Strange being the one to hold the knife, I mean. Yeah like you said, it might sound cold and harsh, but that's what his character is and especially for him as a former surgeon. In medical, there's something called "triage", basically sorting patients based on priority of their required treatment designated to maximize the number of survivors, and that's not a bad thing. Hell, he'd stab the knife to himself if it's what it takes to save everyone (case in example, his first movie). His own happiness means shit if he has patient to be saved. Being a sorcerer is the same. Yes, many wouldn't agree with that, but look at IW and his first movie. Whose decision was it that saved all of them in the end? Man, I just can't with how they butchered Strange and my dream of a good sequel as Doctor Strange's fan.

This movie is the perfect example of why Thanos worked as a villain and Wanda doesn't. Thanos went through something tragic in his young life and so he decided that no one else should suffer the same fate. He was in the wrong and we all know that but the reason it worked was because we are able to understand the problems of over-population, hell, some places suffer from it. He wanted to balence it out, kill billions so trillions could prosper (way more than that but you get it). He even went as far as to sacrifice his own daughter that he cared about so he could "save" the universe. Wanda was sad that Vision died (understandable) so she justfied that it was okay to enslave an ENTIRE town, threaten the people that are trying to stop her and then go after not only a child but kill hundreds of people just so she can kill another version of her and take her kids. In his mind Thanos was destroying people for the greater good, Wanda was doing for a selfish reason

The main reason why this film made little sense and the plot did not work was simple. Based upon Wandavision, the Scarlet Witch should be a VILLAIN, straight out moving forward. But they wanted to make her still be a "Avenger" in the upcoming movies, so had to gloss over all the horrible things she does to make that work. A former hero turning bad based on tragedy is very common in comics, so it would have made so much more sense for that to happen. Plus, she was wayyyyy to OP in this movie and it just ruined any believability.

I am so, so late replying to this but the question as to why people hate this movie bubbled up in my mind and it lead me here. Haha! As for your comment, this is how she is in the comics as well. I mean she does so many messed up things and it feels as though it's swept under the rug. As for her being OP in the movie... she's CRAZY OP in the comics as well. I mean she can control reality itself. That's god-tier. In the House of M, this woman straight wiped the mutant gene from most of the mutants in earth! She uttered, "No more mutants" and bam, no more mutants. That's insane power.

@@genefactor007 Yes. It is the superman problem. The only way to make such a character compelling is: 1. To have them lose powers 2. But in Marvel it really does not work and even if the comic has it, it is still boring.

@@bobross1829 To this I completely agree and I really dig your example. As a kid I was a HUGE Superman fan but my tastes completely changed as an adult. Now, for me, Batman and Daredevil are go-to heroes because I find them more interesting. Ground level heroes are simply more fun to read in my opinion. I feel when they are too powerful, they become the unfortunate victims of benchmarking and some crazy stuff is usually thrown their way to make them interesting. The way Scarlet Witch is often written always get under my skin. I mean, she does some really messed up stuff but yet she's still treated like a hero. That's something you mentioned that was totally true. However I think the way she was written in MoM worked because it dived further into her broken psyche. I also loved the Jason-like horrible aspect of her coming for them as this unstoppable force. Fun stuff. What didn't work for me goes back to Wandavision. Like, how many marbles did she lose when Vision kicked it? Was she able to hold it together just long enough to assist in taking down Thanos before completely going off the rails? I don't know. (beware: This is a long one) Doctor Strange is definitely in my top 5 MCU characters, but even I have to agree that he is better off as a supporting character. And that's entirely the writers' fault. Like you said, Stephen has no arc in this movie. Except for the 'arc' they tried to push onto his character. They tried to push this loneliness and need for control that Strange has when that clearly isn't true nor is shown in any other movie. Sure, Stephen might be lonely underneath all his forgotten trauma (Don't worry, I'll get to that later) and whatever, but this man certainly isn't lacking people to talk to. He has his best friend Wong, who isn't exactly a therapist nor has the time to be one, but they are still shown to be together very often. He has his ex-girlfriend, and even though she found love during the blip, didn't want Strange to talk about his feelings. In fact, she literally encouraged him to do so. Stephen also seems to be in good standing with the Avengers, as nobody blames him for Tony's death and is even amical with him. Of course, like I said earlier, you can be lonely while still being surrounded by people, but let's be honest here: Going with the "Are you happy/aka are you sad you're single" was stupid. The second character trait they tried to push is the "Always holding the knife" one. Again, could be some sort of underlying issue for Stephen, but is in no way something we've seen throughout any of his appearances. In Ragnorok, No Way Home and Endgame it was clear he was allowing other characters their moments to shine and was really only controlling about his little thing (Removing Loki from Earth, Keeping the multiverse from collapsing on itself and letting events play out as they should). You could argue that NWH was a tad bit controlling on his part, but look at the context and it's clear why. In Stephen's major roles, like DS1 and Infinity war he also didn't exhibit this problem. Infinity war he literally gave up control and hoped that the remaining Avengers would do it right, and though I can't give any specific examples of how he gave up/didn't take full control there wasn't any instance that clearly showed the opposite. Hell, the final battle was literally based on the "You don't have true control but neither do I" concept. It makes no sense why they chose these things to push and not anything relevant to Stephen other than the fact that it loosely relates to Wanda as well. Now you might be thinking "Well do you have any better ideas?". Yes, yes I do. Stephen has gone through so much that could easily be a character plot point. He has physically died hundreds of times and seen himself and others die millions of times. He could have severe guilt over the fact that he was partly responsible for Tony's death (I mean, that's debatable but whatever). Oh, and, you know, THE HANDS. Instead of pushing these random things that don't relate to Stephen, we could've gotten a "Man lost in time" arc where Stephen regains his sense of reality through experiencing other multiverses and grounding himself in his universe. This way, we could actually mention the time stone which was one of the most important plotlines in DS1 and actually shows some of the effects the infinity stones have on its user. Why does Jane almost die because of the reality stone, Gamora and Nat die because of the soul stone, the Tesseract and power stone cause intense conflicts, but the time stone and its user are unphased? Not to mention this plotline could also relate to Wanda since they could also make it so her view on reality is distorted because of dream walking. Keep in mind I'm not a movie-writer, nor do I intend to be, but it's really not that hard to think of basic plot points that would actually be relevant. Here are a few more! -Grief. Wanda's grief with the loss of her children and vision. Stephen's grief with the loss of Tony, Christine to an extent, and all his friends from Karmar-taj were murdered (We're looking at you Master Hamir) -Pain. Kind of plays into the grief aspect, but Wanda's emotional pain and Stephen's physical pain. Severe nerve damage is no joke, you know. -Finding love and peace in what you have. Kind of self-explanatory -Getting over your past self. Stephen with his neurosurgeon-ness, Wanda with Westview. Another reason why MCU is ruining Stephen Strange is: They can't decide how powerful he is. Is he the future GOAT sorcerer supreme who breaks the multiverse open within the span of 2 minutes and takes on 4 infinity stones, or is he the weakling who can't untie himself from the mirror dimension HE CONTROLS within less than twelve hours and doesn't even bother to try put up a fight against Wanda. It's really discouraging to see Marvel waste a character with so much potential magic-wise and only use him as something to move plots along. It makes you wonder what they are going to do with future characters. They also haven't set up any boundaries with Eldrith magic. At least with Chaos magic we have some idea on how powerful it is and what its weaknesses and attributes are. Eldrith magic can do whatever the hell the plot needs. Traverse and control other dimensions? You got it. Turn literal black holes into life? Yep. Brainwash entire planets? Totally! Portal anywhere in the universe without actually seeing it first? Why not. Conjure and make items disappear? You guessed it I know it's canon that Chaos magic is more powerful then any other magic, but tbh I'd rather the kind of magic that allows me to do whatever the hell I want with no restraints. Not only that, but trained sorcerers are also martial artists. Why the hell is Dr Strange scared of Wanda when he can just make her forget that Billy and Tommy ever existed? Terrible writing, that's the answer. Anyways I could go on and on about this, but I do not want to spend the next 5 years writing about Mister Doctor Stephen Strange

The lack of focus on Strange was the most annoying thing. He barely drove the plot, if it all. Wanda and America are the ones pushing him. He never makes an important decision. I love his character and I love how Cumberbatch portrays him. I love the creative visuals. But there is no moment similar to the car crash or conversation with the Ancient One in DS1 in this movie.

I re-watched the first Doctor Strange before doing my review. I had forgotten just *how good* that movie was. There is a far *worse* issue with this film, that I really wish I saw people talk about. This film had the chance to do something great with the the Doctor, but that's where they actually did the worst. My main issue with this movie was strange himself, specifically his trial with the Illuminati. Throughout all of the MCU, we get the impression that Steve keeps violating rules in order to accomplish what he saw as the "greater good" or "the only way" and there was an implication there he always overlooked the drawbacks from this. I thought his trial with the Illuminati was going to show that those consequences were, and show him that his ends did not always justify his means. The film even has *multiple* moments where other characters call him out on it and label it as "hypocrisy" on his part, despite their arguments actually being bad since it was (according to him) the only way. Wanda and many others wanna call him out for putting "The only way" before everyone else, when he was actually in the right. The film *ignores* this, and has Strange stare at them all dumbfounded, as though he's actually been caught up in hypocrisy. The way they had to get out of this was to simply say that "Yes, it was the only way, but don't pretend that you can just play God and do as you please just because something you do is "The only way" " And did the film do that? NO Instead, the film decides to invent *a completely different Strange,* put *our* Strange on trial for what the other guy did, and then *almost immediately* forgive him since "he isn't the same guy". Hell, they didn't even have the same Mordo guy from the end-credit scene of the first Dr. Strang movie who wanted to kill him for violating the laws. It almost feels like this movie didn't even happen. This film had a perfect opportunity to give him a meaningful character arc, one that was built upon from way back in the first Dr. Strange movie, and it copped out of it by just inventing a Strange who made a mistake and almost caused an incursion, and an evil Strange for the (first) final battle. *What a wet fart.*
@alexdawson45712 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I feel like NWH handled this better, with Stephen and Peter being in conflict with each other, but end up being right about some things and wrong about others. But yeah. It infuriates me how incomplete Stephen's arc feels in this movie. I like them introducing the idea of Stephen being dangerous because of his need to fix everything, which the What If...? episode demonstrated perfectly. But they forgot a key component to it; his trauma. It would be so easy to link those two things together, but nope. We only get hints of it. And apparently, Feige thought this was better than what Derrickson wanted to do.

You make such a good point! What an AMAZING story and issue it would have been to tackle his "Ends justify the means" philosophy!! Because that exact philosophy literally saved the universe from Thanos. It would be a way to further dismantle his ego as well. In DS1, his ego is dismantled by him needing to submit to the other sorcerers in order to learn, but we see his ego sort of reignite in the following films, in his constant, CONSTANT rule-bending, taking control of yet another role. You'd think they meant to do that, but it seems not! I just hope they kill him off soon before they ruin his character any further.

Stunned that alot of reviews are positive on this movie. First review that is sober enough to see that this movie is a mess. The whole Wanda motivation is so boring and so Hollywood 2000. Thx you sir for this review

This "movie" is not worth talking about nor worth watching. Just throw it out and let it be.

This whole movie was "girl power" at the expense of men. It pandered to the alphabet people and to women, even though they used a man's name to title the movie.

I think part of the problem is that marvel has shifted their focus on trying to make the movies shorter because people kept complaining 🤦🏾♀️ They’re trying to pack a movie in a shorter time frame thus reducing the quality… the writing is too shifty and fast-paced.

I thought it was going to be miserable given all of the critical reviews, but it panned out better than I thought. My only problems were that there were too many things going on in the movie and not enough time to flesh out all of the concepts neatly. As a result, it did not have a good focus on any of the things it was depicting. The forehead eye thing stuck out as lazy to me. Wanda's motivation was not really fleshed out. Other that that, I still enjoyed the movie. The thing that sticks out to me about Doctor Strange is his ingenuity and willingness to bend the rules to tackle the threats he is facing. I just wish that it were split into two movies to give enough time to flesh out all of the concepts and character arcs. Tall order for Disney though. Edit: Another disappointment for me is that Doctor Strange was nerfed. We know that he is capable of much more powerful spells than showcased. Nerfed to get the plot going.

This wasnt a doctor strange movie. This was america chavez vs scarlet witch featuring bennidict cumberbatch.
