Thanks for the discussion, gents. Always a refreshing reminder that it's not about our works that earn us salvation but the righteousness of Jesus alone.

The law Gospel distinction was something that has helped me years ago, but you guys really emphasize radical grace. I am trying to wrap my head around why this view point that emphasizes Grace seems to be lacking. The way you separate or define Grace maybe where you lose me. When I understand Grace and faith I have come to see people define it differently, we use the same words but interpret them differently or in greater or lesser measure. I will try and explain myself, I believe the Grace we received by faith is an active participation in all that is ours in Christ. We are not only recipients of a gift but by God’s Grace and the in dwelling of the Holy Spirit we are really being transformed into the image of our Lord. Correct me if I misunderstood you’re teaching but I hear a lot of comfort in God’s radical Grace, amen for that but then I feel you give up on the strength we have been given. It feels like when people feel the weight of the new call on the believers to be transformed we circle back to resting and taking comfort. Although these truths are great we urge one another to the goal. We want to be like Jesus and the Spirit wants to help us. To truly trust in the Gift of Grace we receive we must give it away. We actually do this by being Christ like. I have been called out for talking the talk but not walking the walk. My awakening came in the realization that my transformation was being hindered by well meaning very nice Christian comforting and encouraging me that we all struggle in our walk and reassured that this is what Christianity was. The conviction I experienced was not coming from others but from the Spirit. When I began responding to the Spirits leading and conviction my life has never been the same. Thanks be to God for waking me up from my resting in the truth of grace and into the arms of Christ who definitely carries me along in the good works that He Has entrusted to me.

1Peter1:13-25 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

Many got the gospel right but are still under law for obedience, you all just don't know it yet. It is when you feel the failure, guilt and shame afterwards. It means you follow rules that require you to do vs grace in weakness [our dependence]. The only work is to believe, we end, he begins, we wait, and the marker is; do we love one another as he loves us. Are we living in our flesh aka our efforts or dependently on Jesus knowing we are failures even when it looks like we are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Jesus gave us the marker to see if we are trusting his life or pur efforts by the fruit of love. This is jow we know who are God true children and this is so important to know who is with you or not for us.

Wow! This content was incredibe, you guys are definitely in your sweet spot when you keep to explaining your position through sound biblical exegesis as the basis of your thesis. It makes understanding the reformed faith in its historical context more attractive and is a powerful apologetic, showing how reformed theology complements and contrasts other evangelical traditions in a gracious way. Thanks for continuing the tradition of 'Ecclesia semper reformanda est' .

This was good guys thank you for that. I identified myself with the troubled consciousness, specially thinking about how I have not complied in the past, and how will I know if I will measure up in the future; leaving me completely disconnected of the present.

Excellent discussion. I would like to add that if you translate John 3:3 as 'born from above' , it would seem to be a gospel statement since it is something God provides. Also,there may be a third category in the law/gospel distinction: R. Scott Clark calls verses such as John 6:28-29 'gospel imperatives'. Believing ( relying, resting, trusting) in Christ is not really a 'work' but 'resting from our work and trusting in the work of Another'. The invitation of Christ "Come to Me" on the surface, seems like something we must do, but since we are told in John chapter 6 that God draws us to Him, it is not law and doing, but gospel and resting. As we all know, even our belief in Christ is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9) and not a work that we do. Please continue to provide these excellent videos. God bless you.

Is sinning a work of Christ? No. It's a work of the flesh. Is loving your enemies a work of the flesh? No. It's a work of Christ. We MUST stop working (sin) so Christ can live in us and work through us.
@Eric-nx2jzАй бұрын
You cant stop sinning, neither can I. Even if I don’t act in sin, my thoughts still sin, my flesh is still there. All we can do is throw ourselves at the feet of Christ and acknowledge we have this Sinner/Saint reality. Glory and Honor to King Jesus!

I understand and agree with the simple explanation of Law/Gospel distinction, but when it is unpacked that's where I have trouble. Here’s just one example; one of the brothers says, “you must be born again is law.” Isn’t born again a state of being and a work of the Spirit?
@jburghau6 ай бұрын
Since God regenerates His people and gives them the gifts of faith and repentance for them to be saved, to be born again or born from above would seem as you suggest to be a gospel statement since this is something God provides and not something we are told to do. Or, as I stated in my other comments on this video, it may be a 'gospel imperative' statement that instructs us to rest in Christ and His work and not rely on our sinful and miserable efforts.
@jburghau6 ай бұрын
I should have added being born again or born from above is not something we can do. God must accomplish this.

How do you pastors contend for the faith against JI Packer, Lewis, Stott, Graham, and others who teamed up with catholics and never repented?
@janssenpalmer56336 ай бұрын
How is “to be born again” law? Is it because the requirement is laid on us? I don’t totally understand. Thoughts? 37:38
@jburghau6 ай бұрын
That is a tough call. If we take it as something we must do, it is law, but when you are born the first time, you are passive and depending on someone else and God to deliver you. Perhaps this illustrates that when we are spiritually reborn, it is nothing we do but what God does in regenerating us. Please also see my comment above on this verse. I would take this as a gospel imperative. God bless you.

Born again is not the law, show me. It is surrendered life to Jesus because we are given a new spirit, a new creation. We are a new creature sealed up by the holy spirit which does sin. Why you say John 3 is law, makes zero sense.

What do you do when you live in an area with a legalist evangelical seminary, and every church preaches a little Jesus and a whole lot of self improvement. I love Jesus but I have left the church I just can take feelings like I'm never enough.

Brother the reason we have a problem with the law gospel distinction as you define it is texts like 1 Corinthians 16:22, “let anyone who does not love the Lord be under a curse.” What is Paul doing here. Under your definitions, you would have to say this is law, which is what God requires, but in the gospel God has already done it for you in Christ, meaning if you don’t love the Lord but trust in Jesus who did you are not under a curse but get salvific blessings. 🤔

Jesus died because of the law, we die with him because we were under the law and now we no longer under the law but married to Christ by faith and not works because that is still lawful as Paul explained about marriage from one husband to another. We die with cross as Jesus did so we can marry anothet husband. No longer under law but freed under our new husband Christ

@KeithGreenshields6 ай бұрын
Wt? Follow me is law? Pick up cross is law, what are you all smoking. Follow me is in spirit and the cross is to die to the law. Crystal clear to me and is a work that is to believe in Jesus alone and not works of flesh, thus the context of John 3 is how to to believe and no law at all. If it was a law based idea, how do you get born again but tjrough the spirit...is the point. You all smart but not that smart.
@KeithGreenshields6 ай бұрын
Why you speak of law? When did God give that to the gentile? Truth is law was for the Jew not the rest of us. Jesus came to save those under law but opened the door to us because the Jews rejected him. The point of law is it says do and in flesh we don't, the harder we try the more we sin. So Christ gospel is to receive him as the end of law and to the inability to gentile in being good. The bottom line is, we can't do anything good apart from God through us, so there is zero point in telling there is a rule to anyone, this makes for a terrible experience for those who want and need to be saved. Never did Jesus say I must, he said he did for me, I don't look to self to obey but trust Christ through me to do his will. So lets stop preaching about any law but the law of Christ to those who have died to self and know they need to live by faith through the life of another. The issue is separating eternity from our earthly life. We need to learn how to succeed on earth now that we are saved. Thus the laws teaching which the gentile did and does have in heart without learning is a guide anyways. The gospel of surrender to God plus surrender and die to self that Jesus may answer and provide through our flesh what we need and what we ought to do by dependence in the moment of life. We are powerless until we surrender then Jesus can work through us. We are saved but need to learn how to let God live through us and not us constantly looking at how bad or good we were... contrary to the gospel.
